Considered one of the greatest preachers of his day this Episcopal clergyman served as rector of St. George's Church in New York City from 1845 to 1878; it is largely due to his efforts that Sunday Schools are such an integral part of American church life hence his moniker "The Champion of Sunday Schools." DEVON ENGLAND. Good. 1946. On offer is a fascinating original circa 1946 manuscript notebook handwritten by noted British author and Vimy Ridge combatant Ulric Nisbet Captain H.U.S. Nisbet. The book is comprised of two sections: a 32 page retrospective autobiography titled "Memories of my Childhood". Flipping the book over and there is an 88 page transcription of materials relating to the First World War the majority about the capture of Vimy Ridge. We note on page two of his War Experiences he was a Captain in the Royal West Kent Regiment and also a Liaison Officer with the 29th Canadians during the battle of Vimy Ridge. Adding further depth to the manuscript are a number of old postcards photographs and other related ephemera within these pages including some family photographs and an old programme dated 1910 from a school play he acted in playing Orpheus. BIO NOTES: Ulric Nisbet 1897 - 1987 was a British writer and the author of "Thoughts on the Purpose of Art" 1934 "Spread No Wings" 1937 and "Old school tie: recollections of Marlborough before the First World War 1964". He also published books under the pseudonym Hugh Callaway. This business executive took over the reins of the Maytag Company as president after the last actual Maytag family member stepped down and upon the death of grandson Fred Maytag II who became president at age 29 in 1940 Umbreit became chairman of the board and chief executive officer. On letterhead of "The Maytag Company" Umbreit complies with a request for a photograph signing handsomely in full in blue ink. Also present is the aforementioned photograph an IPS 8" X 10" n.p. 1960 March 28. Glossy head-and-shoulders informal portrait of Umbreit in suit and tie superbly signed and inscribed in white ink in a dark portion at lower right making for excellent contrast: "To George Gianetti / Best wishes for a great / future. / George Umbreit / President The Maytag Company / 3-28-1960." McGilvray Sep. 8 1913 - Nov. 2 2001 a young Forest Hills Louisiana woman to her boyfriend and future husband Marvin Louis Gordey who lived in Port Arthur Texas and worked at the Texaco company store. The group of letters detail life in Depression Era Louisiana with mention of disgraced Governor Huey P. Long; hardships of the depression has daddy worried with cotton selling only for 4 cents a pound; had barbecued goat which was terrible; some sexual innuendo; a great amount of detail relating to the local news and events of Forest Hills High School and the town itself; flooding of the Red River around Forest Hills and Alexandria; three persons running for Governor when Huey P. 1802 Printed Almanack with Manuscript Margin Notes and Post-Revolutionary Diary Entries by a Columbia County New York Citizen Including Local and Historical References and Curious Coded Language
Claverack New York. Good with no dust jacket. 1802. Softcover. On offer is a printed almanac from 1802 titled Stoddard's Diary: OR THE COLUMBIA ALMANACK For the Year of our LORD 1802 by Andrew Beers. The Almanack contains 38 printed pages and 20 handwritten pages which constitute a short diary or journal kept by a man from Claverack Columbia County New York. The published content combined with the manuscript additions offer an outstanding glimpse into what people considered important information at the turn of the 19th century. The Almanack which is about the ". Usual and necessary in Compositions of this Nature many Things new useful and entertaining" contains printed sections with notes on human anatomy interest tables lunar almanac for each month of the year a list of officers of the Government of the United States and the State of New York and several essays. The published essays include Respect and Deference Due to the Aged The Fortunate Hindoo The Sham Ghost and What Industry Will Accomplish. Also included are advertisement for the Almanack author's new Land Office and Surveying business. The owner of the Almanack would have authored the 20 handwritten pages though their identity is unknown. The pages contain journal entries which are brief and to the point and place them somewhere in Columbia County NY. Some excerpts: "Died Arron Coffin" Feb 13 1802. "Thomas Fotheringham Nephew to Thomas Fotheringham Esq died after a long tedious and most Painful illness" Feb 25 1802. "Derek Ten Brock son of Jeremiah Ten Brock in a fit of Insanity struck a Negro Boy about 6 years of age and hit him outright and dangerously wounded" Mr. Ten Brock his father" Mar 12 1802. The diarist also notes a general election for Congress in April 1802. Excerpts of some historically relevant entries: "Died Mrs. Martha Washington widow of the late Gen'l George Washington" May 22 1802. "Gen'l Robt V Rensselaer was interred at Claverak with Military Honors" Sep 13 1802. Historical Note: Robert Van Rensselaer was a Colonel and later General in the Albion County Militia and fought on the American side in the American Revolution. He later served in the New York state assembly. A curious addition is the inclusion of what appears to be a code: "the C483stz66its48 Frg3qitz 82362dfg47th 2d261 wigz" Feb 14th 1802. A similar coded notation appears for the entry of Oct 17th. This 1802 Almanack turned journal was kept at a time when many of the chief actors of the American Revolution were still alive and the Republic was still quite young. It would be an excellent resource for a historian especially on studying America at the turn of the 19th century. Condition: Paper bound it measures 6 1/2 inches by 4 inches. The paper is in very good condition. There is a small burn scar on the leading edge of the pages but it is limited to the blank margin area. 1887 SUPER ORIGINAL MANASCRIPT DIARY AND SHIP'S LOG FROM THE UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE OF A PETTY OFFICER ON TWO OF HER MAJESTY'S SHPS - THALIA AND EDINBURGH
Good. 1887. On offer is a superb original ship-board journal kept by a British Royal Navy sailor in the late 19th Century. It is a handwritten volume about 180 completely filled pages. The unidentified author is left England on board HMS Thalia a Royal Navy warship. While the author of this journal is unknown from context it is clear that he is not an officer. He works on the ships electrical systems. He notes at one point that his last visit to Malta had been seventeen years earlier. This would suggest that he may be a Petty Officer. Petty officers were seamen who had been "rated" to fill a particular specialist trade on board ship. He writes about daily tasks notes the ship's position and the daily happenings on board. Working in Commanders cabin placing an extra electric light complete it during the afternoon and during the process a fire broke out on the mess deck in one of the circuits owing to a quantity of water getting into the wires the fire bell rung but the flames were soon put out. . We have heard the sad intelligence tonight that HMS Wasp is lost with all hands in Chinese waters. We sincerely hope the news is not correct. Oct 14 1887 HMS Wasp departed Singapore on Sept 10th 1887 and was never heard from again. She was lost with all hands. In Gibraltar they were tied up for a number of days. On Oct 17th he notes that Thalia sailed for England. He does not mention the ship he is transferred to but an entry much later identifies her as HMS Edinburgh an iron-clad battleship. He describes daily tasks a trip on shore to visit the fortress the comings and goings of other RN ships and some critical observations of foreign ships that came in: An Italian man of war came alongside this forenoon and is coaling. . As she passed she looked very dirty . Nov 4 1887 They sailed from Gibraltar to Malta arriving Dec 2nd: Malta was in sight early this morning and at 4 o'clock the Watch was busy getting the upper portions of the ship in apple pie order and at 6 o'clock all hands were turned out and breakfast was had by 6:45 when all hands had to clean in a White working rig and then had to go to stations for going into harbour. . Dec 2 1887 We were off the Rock of Gibraltar early this morning and we steamed in to with a mile of the back of it and I went torpedo Whitehead practice. We have got ten runs when we sighted the Fleet and we had to stop and then steamed to meet them. We got into position about one o'clock and together we steamed into harbour the Flag ship going alongside the New Mole and the other 5 ships Colossus Thunderer Phaeton and us Edinburgh anchoring in the bay . May 23 1888 The Whitehead torpedo was the first self-propelled or "locomotive" torpedo ever developed. EDITOR'S NOTES: Three ships in the Royal Navy have carried the name Thalia. The third of these was a Juno-class wooden screw corvette. The second in this 2-ship class she was designed to carry troops. HMS Thalia was the last ship to be built at Woolwich Royal Dockyard. She was laid down in 1866 and launched 14th July 1869 and completed for the Royal Navy in May 1870. Following this cruise in 1890 she was loaned to the War Department as a powder hulk stationed at Portsmouth. In 1915 she was converted to a base ship. In 1920 she was sold to a Scottish foundry for breaking up. HMS Edinburgh was commissioned at Portsmouth in July 1887 for the 1887 Golden Jubilee Fleet Review and was then posted to the Mediterranean where she was commanded by Commander later Admiral Sir Percy Scott until 1890. Her posting to the Mediterranean ended in 1894. She was then briefly guardship at Hull and was then guardship at Queensferry until 1897 when she went into reserve. In 1908 she was converted for use as a target ship and finally in 1910 she went to the breakers. This journal is a goldmine for a naval historian. It is jam packed with details of ship-board tasks and the comings and goings of ships of the largest fleet in the world at that time. The author had obviously been trained on the most advanced weaponry the navy had at the time torpedos. It is an excellent cross-reference resource. It also describes the ships that were taking the place the great wooden ships of the line as iron-clad the battle cruisers and dreadnoughts that would dominate the naval battles of WWI. The covers are missing but the diary is preserved in an original clothed envelope. The first and last page is in poor condition and several pages are loose. MCMINNVILLE OREGON. Good. 1918. On offer is a delightful diary dating to WWI. Coming from the American west this diary measures 5.75 inches by 4 inches and contains 365 pages. It is 90% complete. The cover and the pages are in good condition and all pages are intact. The back cover and the spine have separated from the binding but the front cover remains attached. The handwriting is legible. Also included with the diary are three black and white photographs. They depict 2 couples and a single picture of a woman. There is no annotation or identification with them. The diary is written by an unknown woman from the area around McMinnville Oregon. She is never identified. However she does live with another woman Anna who appears to be her sister. References crop up about someone named Peter and context would suggest that he is a boy although the relationship is never explained. This is a story of these two single women living in a small community in 1918 as WWI is coming to an end. Rationing is something they live with daily and their financial circumstances are tight. Anna in particular is continually looking for work. Jobs are hard to come by and often short-lived. But they manage. There are some entries that talk about selling personal items to raise some money. In April our author falls and suffers a serious leg fracture ending up in the hospital. Despite a long recovery she is remarkably cheerful and a warm quiet humour comes through in some of her entries. "The dickens of a day! I did a washing but did not hang out the clothes for it was stormy and cold. Anna went to work for Sealy; but don't know how long it will last. Bernard was in in the evening. The typewriter came up and I copied several recipes." Mar 4; ". had dinner upstairs to save wood . but . proved not good as it was burnt. Crisco for butter canned and a wonderful pudding made of coco flour and water. War menu! The conservation people can't teach us anything." Feb 15; ". We read and knit all day except long enough to get dinner and eat it. Things taste much alike though I don't know just why. Lack of milk meat butter and sugar I suppose. We truly are doing our share toward food conservation. In the evening Anna wrote to Ida and I made a valentine for Peter to give to Mrs. Ball." Feb 10; "Did about the usual things. Ruth was over in the evening to show us Nell's pictures. Finished Esther's little dress. The Ball children & their chums had a great deal of fun throwing ashes and mud and rocks on to our front porch and writing with soap on our front windows such remarks as "Wanted -a man". Helen is such a fool for a 17 yr. girl and Frances is growing to be a rowdy but as Mrs. Ward says "What can you expect when you consider their mother" Oct 31. You can almost hear the exuberance in her entry for Nov 11th: "Peace! Peace! Peace! The news came about midnight ."Nov 11. Notwithstanding a year filled with a bad accident financial worries and daily hard work her last entry for the year is really inspiring: ".This year has been good to us in many ways. We are all in usual health none of us missing our soldiers are well and safe and the world at peace and in spite of my accident I can walk." Dec 31. This is a delightful diary to read. It gives a very intimate look at the day to day struggles of two women in fairly difficult economic times. Notwithstanding their challenges they get on with their daily lives with determination and good humour. 1923 UNUSUAL ORIGINAL SPANISH LANGUAGE TRAVEL DIARY DETAILING A PAIR OF FRIENDS DRIVING A MODEL T FORD FROM ST. LOUIS TO COLUMIBIA MISSOURI
ST. LOUIS TO COLUMBIA MISSOURI 1923. On offer is a fascinating journal written by a young man describing an auto trip shortly after WWI. This small journal / notebook measures 8 inches by 6 inches and contains 16 pages and a number of clear annotated black and white photographs. The pages are 100% complete. The cover and pages are in very good condition. The handwriting is neat and legible. It is written in Spanish. The journal is entitled Aventuras En Un Ford or Adventures in a Ford. The author is known only as Marcelino. There is no other information about him. Written in 1923 it describes a car trip he took with a friend in a Ford Model T automobile from St. Louis MO to Columbia MO. The journal is illustrated with 7 black and white photographs depicting himself his car his friend and some other individuals. The photographs are annotated. They left St. Louis at 8 o'clock in the morning of March 18th. He writes with an evident sense of humour as the opening page has a picture of his car - named El Heroe Irracional Irrational Hero. With some droll comments he remarks on the weather cold! and accompanies the comments with a picture of himself bundled up in a parka noting that the temperature is 2o F. Here are some excerpts translated from his journal. He has a delightful self-deprecating sense of humour that brings both his trip and his personality alive. "El dia 18 de marzo de 1923 despues de haber trasladado com mi amigo Jeans a la ciudad de St. Louis con el fin de traer a esta ciudad de Columbia un automivil Ford. Me hallaba en ese hermosa manana de Domingo dispuesto a emprender el viaje de regresso. El viaje nocturuo de ida que en la noche del Sabado hierera mis habia fatigado un tanto pero la novedad de la aventura que iba a corer durante el dia me mante nia despierto y activo. On March 18 1923 after having moved with my friend Jeans to the city of St. Louis in order to bring to the city of Columbia a Ford automobile. I was on that beautiful Sunday morning ready to undertake the return trip. The night trip on Saturday night had tired me somewhat but the novelty of the adventure that was going to run during the day kept me awake and active. In another place: "Media hora mas tarde a eso a las ocho haciamos nuestra entrada triumphal en el pueblito de jonesburg. Llegamos al hotel McClure. Nuestras aparineias eran dignas de ser pasadas a la historia. Half an hour later at that time at eight o'clock we made our triumphal entrance into the town of Jonesburg We arrived at the McClure hotel. Our appearances were worthy of being passed down into history". The remaining pages carry on in the same light-hearted vein. The front cover has a carefully-drawn map of their trip. In addition to photographs most pages have some carefully drawn design patterns. This is a charming description of a trip that is well-written and illustrated. 1968 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY AN IRANIAN-AMERICAN DOCTOR WHO ANSWERS THE CALL BACK HOME TO ASSIST AFTER THE DEVASTING DASHT-E BAYAZ AND FERDOWS EARTHQUAKES
IRAN. Good. 1968. On offer is a fascinating original manuscript diary handwritten by an American medical doctor of Iranian origin from Wilmington North Carolina containing a powerful account of the 1968 earthquake aftermath in Iran and his participation in relief efforts. The Dasht-e Bayaz and Ferdows earthquake occurred in August 1968 causing massive destruction and killing between 7000 and 12000 people. The doctor whose name is unknown but who likely worked in Wilmington's Cape Fear Hospital flew to Teheran on the 10th of September to join efforts organized by the Red Lion and Sun Society then a member of the International Red Cross organization. Until that date the diary contains only scarce records made by different hands probably by his wife and child but the pages covering his trip to Iran are densely filled. After spending about two days in Teheran with his family and solving organizational issues he flew to the earthquake-stricken provinces where he worked in Mashhad Torbat-Hydarieh Kakh Bidokht Juimand assisting local hospital staff treating patients: On September 23rd "visited almost all patients most from disaster" 2 days later "afternoon headed west and saw the terrible site of total disaster in Kakh. Stench of dead flesh under ruins was nauseating". He shortly describes his interactions with doctors and officials and provides details of the surgeries that vary from orthopaedic surgeries to ruptured liver repair uterus reconstruction and delivering babies. It is touching to see when several days after the surgeries he returns to the records about his patients who had poor prognosis and proudly adds "saved life" or "excellent results". His mission was probably interrupted when he took ill with Hepatitis: "jaundiced - yellow as an autumn leaf". Hard mission also takes its toll he complains on not being able to sleep "reminiscent of previous accidents miseries". He leaves Iran on October 21 has several connecting flights including in Tel-Aviv where he closely misses a serious fire at the airport the last entry is made on October 25th 25 minutes before landing in Wilmington. In his account he mentions several people from Wilmington including Doctor Albert Warshawer and nurse Mary Lambert from the Fear Hope Hospital and doctors and administrators in Iran and Pakistan including Dr. Qureshi Dr. Radpour and Dr. Parviz Adle. Book condition: Good ; cover mainly spine is slightly worn a small stain on the back cover. Language: English with few words in Farsi probably some names of Iranians he worked with and of places.
