I due lavori qui pubblicati precedono il suo primo lavoro di ampia notorietà che è “Le calcul des résidus et ses applications à la théorie des fonctions” del 1905. Fortunato da Brescia, importante matematico e anatomista italiano, si imbatte in alcune annotazioni giovanili del cardinale Querini, suo protettore, alla preposizione XXI del VII libro degli “Elementa” di Euclide, in cui Q. eccepiva su un teorema relativo alla proporzionalità tra numeri. Anni prima Grandi, in una lettera a Querini, aveva negato valore ai rilievi di quest’ultimo. Su commissione del cardinale, F. tratta nuovamente la questione, e sostiene col Querini che l’enunciato euclideo vale per i numeri interi ma non per i frazionari. This important mathematic and Italian anathomist is protecting, in the present volume, the remarks of his protector, the cardinal Querini, about a point of Euclide’s “Elementa” in which Q. substains that a theorema is only reliable to whole numbers, and not to the fractionary ones.

Questa rara edizione fu pubblicata nel cinquantesimo anniversario del dottorato di Gauss e contiene la sua quarta dimostrazione del teorema fondamentale di algebra. Nel 1799, cinquant’anni prima, Gauss era stato il primo matematico della storia a dimostrare questo teorema (che era stato enunciato nel 1629 da Albert Girard): in passato ci avevano provato, senza riuscirci, scienziati del calibro di d’Alambert, Eulero, Lagrange, Laplace. Ottima copia. This rare edition was published in the 50th anniversary of Gauss’ doctorate and it includes his fourth demonstration of the fundamental theorem of algebra. In 1799, 50 years before, Gauss himself was the first mathematician in history to demonstrate that theorem (stated by Albert Girard in 1629): before Gauss, the demonstration was unsuccessfully tried by d’Alambert, Euler, Lagrange, Laplace. A very fine copy.

Prima edizione della versione italiana della Raddologia di Nepero, fra i primi testi a dare indicazioni sul calcolo tramite congegni meccanici. Il dispositivo proposto in questo libro, piuttosto noto nella storia della matematica, è quello dei “bastoncini di Nepero”, un antesignano del regolo calcolatore, e del quale lo scienziato scozzese ideò numerose varianti - qui descritte - in grado di eseguire divisioni ed estrarre radici quadrate. Tradizionalmente a Nepero (1550-1617) si attribuisce in matematica l’introduzione dei logaritmi naturali. Opera rara e importante in prima edizione italiana. First edition of Italian translation of Napier’s Raddology, between the first texts to give details about calculus through mechanical instruments. The machines suggested in this book, quite familiar in mathematics’ history, is the one of “Napier Bones”, a prelude of the slide rule, that the scottish scientist made up in many versions - here descripted - able to perform divisions and square roots. Rare and important book, in its first Italian edition.

Prima e unica edizione di questo libro dedicato ai giochi, ma ricco di escursioni nel campo della matematica e delle scienze sociali: notevole per originalità l’ampio capitolo dedicato alle “minchiate”, ovvero i tarocchi toscani (arricchiti di una serie di carte rispetto ai tarocchi classici), in cui l’autore non si limita a descrivere il gioco e le sue regole, ma aggiunge delle lunghe e nutrite ‘note allegoriche’, in cui le carte e le varie situazioni di gioco vanno a comporre una parziale ma a volte non superficiale rappresentazione dell’universo. Matematico per formazione, scrittore prolifico, Francesco Saverio Brunetti da Corinaldo (n. 1693, non si conosce la data della morte) “visse quasi sempre in Roma, ove sotto i pontificati di Clemente XII, Benedetto XIV, e Clemente XIII, diede varj saggi della sua abilità” (Comolli, III, p. 43): al di là della sua attività di ricerca scientifica, è segnalata la capacità divulgatoria del B. che, come in questo caso, scrisse più di un trattato su istanza di (e dedicandolo a) una nobildonna “per facilitarne l’intelligenza” e renderlo “all’uso femminile, sull’esempio del Fontanelle, dell’Algarotti, e di tant’altri”. Nel presente trattato la parte matematica si limita in effetti ad alcuni esercizi di aritmetica, dando più spazio al discorso e, come nel caso degli scacchi, a una chiara esposizione delle regole (qui completata da un cospicuo repertorio di aperture). Comolli, Angelo, “Bibliografia storico-critica dell'architettura civile ed arti subalterne”, Roma, 1788-92 First and only edition of this book on games, with many excurtions in mathematics and social sciences: it’s remarkable the wide part dedicated to the “Minchiate”, i.e. tuscan tarots (with more cards than the classic ones): the author not only explains the game and its rules, but also adds some long ‘allegoric notes’, in which cards and game situations composes a short but not shallow representation of human types and events. Basically a scientist, Brunetti (born in 1693, death is unknown), was living in Rome, under protection of popes Clemens XII, Benedict XIV, Clemens XIII: his activity included disclosure works, as this one, in which mathematics are limited to basic arithmetics, giving more room to explanations and, as for chess, a plain exposition of rules (there’s also a nourrished openings list).
