Old Oraibi: A Study of the Hopi Indians of Third Mesa
xi2734 plates4 Peabody listing pages with frontispiece diagrams tables figures charts bibliography and appendix. Quarto 10 3/4" x 7 1/4" bound in original wrappers. Papers of the Peabody Museum of American Archaeology and Ethnology volume XXII number 1. Reprint. The Hopi have 12 villages located in three regions: First Mesa Second Mesa and Third Mesa. While language customs and traditions are similar each village conducts its own ceremonies and has features that are unique from others. Third Mesa is home to the villages of Kykotsmovi Old Oraibi Hotevilla and Bacavi. Forty-five miles to the west near Tuba City is the Hopi village of Moenkopi. Oraibi was founded sometime before the year 1100 AD making it one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements within the United States. Archeologists speculate that a series of severe droughts in the late 13th century forced the Hopi to abandon several smaller villages in the region and consolidate within a few population centers. As Oraibi was one of these surviving settlements its population grew considerably and became populous and the most influential of the Hopi settlements. By 1890 the village was estimated to have a population of 905 almost half of the 1824 estimated to be living in all of the Hopi settlements at the time. Oraibi remained unknown to European explorers until about 1540 when Spanish explorer Don Pedro de Tovar who was part of the Coronado expedition encountered the Hopi while searching for the legendary Seven Cities of Gold. Contact with the Europeans remained scant until 1629 when the San Francisco mission was established in the village. In 1680 the Pueblo Revolt resulted in decreased Spanish influence in the area and the cessation of the mission. Subsequent attempts to reestablish the missions in Hopi villages were met with repeated failures. The former mission is still visible today as a ruin.Condition:Corners bumped light edge wear else a very good copy. Peabody Museum Harvard University Press (Human Relations Area Files) paperback

Inheritance of Digital Malformations in Man
69-77 pages with 2 tables and 4 plates. Royal octavo 9 3/4" x 6 1/2" bound in original wrappers. Papers of the Peabody Museum of American Archaeology and Ethnology Volume III number 3. First edition.A great deal has been written concerning the abnormities of the hands and feet and numerous cases of polydactylism syndactylism and macrodactylism have been recorded; but very few cases of hypophalangia or hyperphalangia have ever been noted. The following case of hypophalangia or diminution in the number of phalanges came under the author's notice a few years earlier. After careful examination the anomaly was found to be interesting not only as a case of anatomical variation but also as a study in heredity. All the digits of all the extremities of thirty-seven persons were affected and the anomaly is inherited in conformity with Mendel's law of five generations. Measurements tracings photographs radiographs plaster casts and complete genealogical tables were made.William C. Farabee the second individual to obtain a doctorate in physical anthropology from Harvard University engaged in a wide range of anthropological work during his time as a professor at Harvard and then as a researcher at the University Museum Philadelphia but is best known for his work in human genetics and his ethnographic and geographic work in South America.Condition:Wrapper edges chipped internally still unread with pages attached else a very good copy. Body Arts and Modernity.
Wantage Oxon: Sean Kingston Publishing 2007. Hardback octavo no jacket as issued pictorial cover very good plus condition black & white text-photos. 185 pp. These essays draw together ideas emerging from the anthropology of the body the Western interest in body ornamentation of the 'other' and the recent revival of specific body arts such as tattooing and piercing. Drawing on ethnographic case studies from the Amazon Indonesia Africa Melanesia and Polynesia this volume shows how bodily presentation plays a fundamental role in contemporary identity politics interacting with national and global stereotypes that may in turn both constrain and empower local traditions.
