La scelta forzatamente limitata è ricaduta sui temi più cari all'autore: dallo spazio dell'abitare a quello del sacro, dall'importanza e la bellezza della città europea alle contraddizioni registrate nel recente sviluppo edilizio. Non potevano inoltre mancare alcune considerazioni sul suo impegno come fondatore dell'Accademia di architettura e del Teatro dell'architettura di Mendrisio. ma anche un lungo capitolo con il quale ha voluto saldare il debito di riconoscenza verso i Maestri (Le Corbusier, Carlo Scarpa e Louis I. Kahn) che lo hanno accompagnato e lo hanno condotto a sviluppare il suo personale linguaggio. Sono riflessioni scritte in maniera semplice e lineare, che rispecchiano il suo modo di fare architettura. Un modo che predilige forme chiare e facilmente riconoscibili, che possono combinarsi per dare vita a opere ogni volta diverse tra loro, ma inconfondibili del suo stile. Lo stesso accade in queste brevi o lunghe testimonianze che traducono in parole un percorso altrimenti disegnato e che, proprio come i suoi progetti, sono state oggetto di un continuo processo di riflessione.

br. Nel secondo volume di "Quasi un diario", continua la raccolta degli scritti di Mario Botta (dal 2003 al 2013). In una singolarità acuta e partecipe della scrittura, si apre e si svolge un orizzonte smisurato: incontri, memorie, vissuto, l'inesauribile riflessione sull'architettura, le aperture al pensiero, alla letteratura, all'arte, a testimonianze contemporanee. Fuori da codificazioni situazionali, l'originalità dell'opera di Botta sembra coniugarsi nella dialettica tra il qui dell'esistenza, il primo sguardo e un'apertura incondizionata al di là del "confine". Così il suo percorso ideale: dalla casa, alla città, ai luoghi della cultura, alle architetture del sacro, alla concezione stessa dello spazio riconsiderato nell'immensità dell'esistenza. Una presenza, Mario Botta, che può essere una conferma di quella frontiera (di quella "svizzeritudine") che, in un lascito di cultura, sa arrivare all'austerità di un primordio: l'alfabeto di Klee, la sublimità della figura che cammina in Giacometti, la sconfinata lingua di Varlin.
