XII 2 134 pp. � The exceedingly scarce first edition of this landmark work of logical and mathematical thought in which Bolzano anticipates by decades Cantor's work on Infinite Numbers lays the foundation for set theory and becomes a precursor Cauchy Cantor and Weierstrass in the arithmetization of mathematical analysis. Needless to say the work which calls for a total arithmetization of mathematical analysis was highly praised and admired by by the most important logicians in the field Peirce Dedekind and Cantor.<br><br>"Paradoxes of the Infinite is a landmark in modern mathematical and logical thought. Bolzano recognized the necessity in analyzing the paradoxes of infinity of defining various "obvious" mathematical concepts including that of continuity . Certain of the mathematical implications of his simple and obvious statement about continuity are utterly astonishing' J.R. Newman The world of mathematics p. 241. <br><br>"In 'Paradoxes' Bolzano became the first mathematician to note that an infinite set could be considered equivalent to certain of its subsets. Thus for example the sets of positive whole numbers is equivalent to the set of positive even numbers although it is clear that the set of even numbers is only a subset of the set of whole numbers. . The property of infinite sets noted by Bolzano was later used by C. S. Pierce to define precisely the concepts of finite and infinite sets. . Bolzano actually laid the foundations for set theory. He also was a precursor of Cauchy Cantor and Weierstrass in the arithmetization of mathematical analysis." ‎brossura Questo libro, scritto tra la fine degli anni Sessanta e l'inizio degli anni Settanta del secolo scorso, è stato pubblicato nel 1973, appena dopo la scomparsa di Ezio Bonfanti, uno dei suoi due autori. Commissionato come una monografia sullo studio BBPR degli architetti Banfi (1910-1945), Belgiojoso (1909-2004), Peressuti (1908-1976), Rogers (1909-1969) - straordinarie figure emergenti nella cultura architettonica, non solo italiana, del '900 - per la volontà e la capacità dei suoi autori si è trasformato in un testo che osserva la cronaca dell'architettura del '900 nello specchio del lavoro dei BBPR. Un lavoro esemplare e eccezionale che, iniziato nel 1932, ha registrato e trascritto il variare delle stagioni culturali nel nostro paese, e che è stato letto da Bonfanti e da Porta alla luce della crisi di valori degli anni '60. Oggi si può dire che questo libro rappresenta contemporaneamente una lettura critica dell'architettura dei BBPR, una riflessione sull'architettura italiana alla fine del fascismo e negli anni della rinascita del paese, una immagine in trasparenza di ciò che nell'ambiente milanese furono gli anni a cavallo tra i Sessanta e i Settanta. ‎br. È un organismo vivo questa biblioteca piena di fantasmi di Jacques Bonnet, collezionista di volumi, editore e traduttore. Parla dei libri come di vecchi amici, illustra gli infiniti metodi per classificarli (alfabetico, per formato, genere, colore, lingua, rilegatura, paese...), predilige ripiani in legno piuttosto che vetrine che impediscono ai libri di respirare, ignora la polvere, ci rassicura che non è necessario aver letto tutti i libri che si posseggono. Racconta dei romanzi in cui protagonisti sono i libri, di biblioteche distrutte - Alessandria, Dresda, Sarajevo - di collezioni private andate a fuoco o svendute da famelici eredi. Rievoca il suo incontro con Pontiggia con cui progettava una associazione di collezionisti (ma dovevano possedere almeno 20.000 volumi), e del disagio provato a casa di Leonardo Sciascia vedendo una edizione completa del Journal dei Goncourt che lui, francese, invece non aveva. Si interroga, infine, sul senso delle grandi collezioni nell'epoca di internet e delle consultazioni a distanza.‎
