Lo stesso berlusconismo, che pur ha favorito il nuovo asse destra/sinistra, può essere interpretato come un tentativo di reazione a tale vincolo, ma fallito per non essere riuscito a trovare una linea di politica estera. Le cause di questa debolezza nazionale vanno cercate in un deposito di ritardi storici da cui sgorga, a partire dall'opera di Machiavelli, il timore che la modernità possa provenire solo d'oltralpe o d'oltreoceano, altrimenti il paese rischierebbe di sprofondare nel ritardo mediterraneo. Con uno stile consumato, ma capace di rendere ancora visibile il potere in scienza politica, l'autore ripercorre la modernizzazione della penisola italiana, fra diplomazia post-risorgimentale e geopolitica fascista, per approdare a una riflessione critica sulla politica estera repubblicana e sulle condizioni della democrazia contemporanea. Con 'passione', ma soprattutto con cauto 'realismo', la conclusione è affidata a un esergo sul potere nazionale: "volare basso, fare gruppo per salire in alta quota, tornare giù se non ci sono le condizioni".

Pp. 360-365. � First edition of Dirac's electron "hole" theory; the foundation for his prediction of anti-matter.<br><br>One troubling consequence of the famous Dirac relativistic wave equation was that it implied that electrons should exist in states of negative as well as positive energy. Therefore a Dirac electron with initially positive energy should fall indefinitely by spontaneous emission towards states of lower and lower energy. To avoid this Dirac postulated in "A Theory of Electrons and Protons" that the states of negative energy were normally filled up according to the exclusion principle. Holes in this "sea" would behave like positively-charged particles. Dirac initially believed that these holes could be identified with protons but Hermann Weyl and others showed that they should have the same mass as the electron. The following year in the introduction to another paper the next item Dirac conceded and called these holes 'anti-electrons'. The existence of this particle was demonstrated experimentally by Carl Anderson in 1932; he called it the 'positron'. <br>"Dirac divided the initial wave equation into two simpler ones each providing solutions independently. It now appeared that one of the solution systems required the existence of positive electrons having the same mass and charge as the known negative electrons. This initially posed considerable difficulty for Dirac's theory since positively charged particles were known only in the form of the heavy atom nucleus. This difficulty which at first opposed the theory has now become a brilliant confirmation of its validity. For later on positive electrons the positrons whose existence was stipulated in Dirac's theoretical investigation have been found by experiment." -Nobel Prize Presentation Speech<br><br>Dirac shared the 1933 Noble Prize in Physics with Schrodinger for "for the discovery of new productive forms of atomic theory". hardcover

Clean and fine. � First appearance of these milestone papers in Quantum Physics constituting the first step in Quantum Field Theory and the invention of the Second Quantifization Method. By these papers Dirac "gave the foundation for that theory quantum electrodynamics"Pais.<br><br>"A New Radiation Theory. Dirac liked his transformation theory because it was the outcome of a planned line of research and not a fortuitous discovery. He forced his future investigations to fit it. The first results of this strategy were almost miraculous. First came his new radiation theory in February 1927 which quantized for the first time James Clerk Maxwell�s radiation in interaction with atoms. Previous quantum-mechanical studies of radiation problems except for Jordan�s unpopular attempt retained purely classical fields. In late 1925 Jordan had applied Heisenberg�s rules of quantization to continuous free fields and obtained a light-quantum structure with the expected statistics Bose Einstein and dual fluctuation properties. Dirac further demonstrated that spontaneous emission and its characteristics�previously taken into account only by special postulates�followed from the interaction between atoms and the quantum field. Essential to this success was the fact that Dirac�s transformation theory eliminated from the interpretation of the quantum formalism every reference to classical emitted radiation contrary to Heisenberg�s original point of view and also to Schr�dinger�s concept of as a classical source of field.<br><br>This work was done during Dirac�s visit to Copenhagen in the winter of 1927. Presumably to please Bohr who insisted on wave-particle duality and equality Dirac opposed the "corpuscular point of view" to the quantized electromagnetic "wave point of view." He started with a set of massless Bose particles described by symmetric waves in configuration space. As he discovered by� playing with the equations � this description was equivalent to a quantized Schr�dinger equation in the space of one particle; this� second quantization� was already known to Jordan who during 1927 extended it into the basic modern quantum field representation of matter. Dirac limited his use of second quantization electromagnetic to radiation: to establish that the corpuscular point of view once brought into this form was equivalent to the wave point of view."DSB. hardcover
