Edition originale de ce recueil de 34 Cantos composés par le poète chilien (1917-2001) entre Vina del Mar et Saint-Cloud de 1956 à 1961. Exemplaire enrichi d'un bel envoi de l'auteur à Michel Deguy. Précieux exemplaire de Michel Deguy, qui a traduit au crayon puis à l'encre bleue les 27 premiers cantos (sur 34) de l'oeuvre du poète chilien (1917-2001). On joint une belle lettre autographe de François Fédier adressée à Michel Deguy (2 ff. manuscrits sur papier bleuté), datée de mars 1973, qui expose plusieurs "lieux d'incertitude" de la traduction de La guerra santa et se propose "d'engueuler" Godofredo Iommi pour qu'il participe à cette traduction, "même si d'instinct je comprends pourquoi il ne veut pas, lui, traduire son poème". Couverture passée.‎

‎Exemplaire provenant de la bibliothèque de Maurice de Gandillac (1906-2006). Eminent universitaire spécialiste de la philosophie de la Renaissance et germaniste, il a dialogué avec tous ceux qui ont compté dans la pensée européenne : Husserl, Cassirer, Heidegger, Sartre, Raymond Aron ... Professeur de philosophie à la Sorbonne, son influence fut déterminante pour les principaux penseurs de la "French Theory" : Michel Foucault, Gilles Deleuze, Jacques Derrida, Jean-Francois Lyotard, Paul Ricoeur, Louis Althusser... Il fut également au centre de la vie intellectuelle française en dirigeant, avec son épouse Geneviève, l'Association des Amis de Pontigny-Cerisy, organisatrice des colloques du Centre culturel international de Cerisy-la-Salle.‎

‎4to. 5½ pp. In French. Important text about artistic creation and the avant-garde, published in "Les Lettres françaises" of 17 April 1958 as part of the survey: "What is the avant-garde in 1958?". In Ionesco's view, art must strive to express realities that are "new and ancient, present and inopportune, living and permanent, particular, and, at the same time, universal". A label like "the avant-garde" is a mere afterthought to this goal: "To want to be part of the avant-garde before writing, not to want to be part of it, to refuse or choose an avant-garde is, for a creator, to construe things the wrong way round". For Ionesco the avant-garde is "only the current, historical expression of an inactual actuality (if I may say so), of a trans-historical reality". Therefore he is very sceptical of political art, as the work of art "is nothing if it does not transcend the temporary truths or obsessions of history". Several artists, historical and biblical figures are mentioned as examples of the "profound universalism" Ionesco is arguing for, including Buddha, Shakespeare, the Spanish mystic Juan de la Cruz, Proust, Chekhov, Brecht, and Picasso. In his own work, Ionesco tries "to say how the world appears to me, what it seems to be for me, as sincerely as possible without concern for propaganda, without intention of directing the consciences of contempraries. I try to be an objective witness in my subjectivity". The essence of his theatre is the contradictory, the absurd: "Since I write for the theatre, I am only concerned with personifying, embodying a comic and tragic sense of reality at the same time." Ionesco describes a childhood memory of a senseless act of violence which first invoked the feelings of vertigo, anguish, and transience that he tries to convey in his art: "I have no other images of the world apart from those, expressing the ephemerality and the harshness, the vanity and the anger, the nullity or hideous, useless hatred. This is how existence continued to appear to me". In closing, he aims to reconcile avant-garde and "living tradition", past and present: "One has the impression, also, that the more one is of one's time, the more one is of all times (if one breaks the crust of superficial topicality) [...] The youngest, newest works of art are recognizable and speak to all eras. Yes, King Solomon is my leader; and Job, this contemporary of Beckett". - With a stricken-out title "Avant-garde et tradition", corrections, and typograph marks. Old library-label to lower back, scratch to front-board, white chalk-like staining to back-board. Internally a bit of brownspotting, but overall good condition. Contemporary marginal notes to three pp. Woodcut printer's device to t-p. and last leaf, a few woodcut initials. 144, (6) pp., 1 f. w. printer's device. With the ex-libris of Jeffrey Norton.‎

‎Very rare Froben-edition of the first work by the Renaissance-historian Paolo Giovio. All early editions of this work are very rare.Giovio was a gifted philosopher, medic and historian. He was born in 1483 in Come (Lombard) and was as controversial a person as he was an author. He died in 1552 in Florence, and this particular edition is thus printed in his lifetime. Three other editions appeared in his lifetime, all printed in Rome, in 1524, 1527, 1528, but the 1531-edition is the only one by as prominent a printer as Froben.Giovio was very strategic and succeeded in connecting himself with the Medici-family, especially Giulio Medici, who was later elected Pope (Clement VIII) when he became Pope, Giovio was assigned chambers in the Vatican and in 1528 he was announced Bishop of Nocera. Giovio wrote historical and biographical works and essays these works are said not to be taken as authorities, but in their entirety and with proper reservation they do have real value, especially because he gives a rich and lively picture of Italy in his own time. He gives indispensable accounts of the manners and lives of the people of Renaissance Italy. As a writer and clergy he played quite a big role in Renaissance Italy.This his first work is a rarity and plays a special part in his body of writing, as it is neither historical nor biographical. It deals with the types of fish that Romans eat and tells how to prepare them, it is thus of great importance to anyone interested in the lives and customs of the time, and it is sometimes counted among the earliest of cook books. It also provides names of the fish and details of where they can be found, and where the best of each species is most easily found, making it of real value to the ichthyologist" this work is also said to contain the first reference in history to American fish. The work was translated into Italian in 1560, eight years after the death of Giovio.Not in Simon. BMC (NH) only mentions the 1561 edition and the 1560 translation. Wood p. 359: ""a very early treatise on Roman ichthyology"" (""the rare"" 1524 first edition).‎
