In 1854 this thriving Virginia plantation owner and businessman became an early Chicago real estate mogul when he and partner James Rees built one of that city's first permanent structures the then-massive three-story Lakeview House Hotel on Lake Shore Drive to lure more investors into the area. DS 1p lettersheet 7½" X 9 3/4" n.p. 30 October 1845. Very good. Original folds visible but not weakened. Hundley and two others "being duly Sworn" have "seen and Examined the Estray Hog taken up by Jas. Marshall and. do appraise the said Estray Hog at the Sum of Two Dollars & fifty cents. The said Hog is a harrow white colour about two years old no brand marked with an under keel in the left and overkeel in the Right Ear. We were informed that when the said Hog appeared on the plantation about 12 months ago was a boar and that he has been altered since -- & that he has ranged on this plantation & in the neighbourhood for 12 months past." Neatl penned in deep blue ink and signed at the conclusion by Hundley and two others Charles Huthison George I. Roberts. Below this justice of the peace Roberts testifies and signs again then below this another figure partly legible but presumably county clerk testfies "Sworn to by G I Roberts before me." "Estray is simply legalese for a domesticated animal found lost or wandering and the purpose of this "Notice of Estray" may have been to authorize the sheriff to impound and sell the animnal to recover upkeep costs. Neben seiner Tätigkeit an der Hofoper in Schwerin war Hungar als beliebter Konzert- und Oratoriensänger auf Reisen.

I shall not however expect to find further points for Mr Blanchard's reconsideration: he had already so thoroughly attended to my previous suggestions and had so little further to do when I returned him the last proof that now there cannot well be more to add to the plate [...] The praise due to you as the publisher I feel to be more singular for it is by the fact that you have been ruled by an artistic interest in your task that the engraver has had the proper opportunity for completing his work so perfectly; had you allowed the business interest to be paramount you would have considered only how you could most quickly turn your capital invested in the work, and have discovered the best means of producing a black effective engraving in the shortest possible time: that you have not done this is I really believe a great service to the progress of good taste in England, for the excellence of the work itself and the superiority of the particular kind of engraving for pictures possessing precision of form and brilliancy of light will be at once recognised by your subscribers [...]". - Slightly wrinkled. Die russische Druckschrift "Voprosy zheleznodorozhnogo transport v svyazi so Stakhanovskim svizheniem" ("Fragen der Eisenbahn in Zusammenhang mit der Stachanow-Bewegung", Moskau 1935) des Stalin-Vertrauten Lasar Kaganowitsch diente dem Schriftsteller, Kritiker und einstigen Literaturstudenten Hugo Huppert als meist interlinear benutztes Schreibheft für Auszüge aus Rainer Maria Rilkes "Stundenbuch", welches Rilke seinerzeit seiner Geliebten, der in St. Petersburg geborenen Schriftstellerin und Philosophin Lou Andreas-Salomé, gewidmet hatte. Es sind Auszüge aus zwei Teilen des "Stundenbuchs" wiedergegeben, dem "Buch vom mönchischen Leben" (1899, die Gedichte 6, 15, 16, 18, 19, 22-25, 28-31, 38,39, 41-43) und dem "Buch von der Pilgerschaft" (1901, die Gedichte 47, 52-55, 58, 60-62, 66-68, 70, 74, 80, 81, 83-88, 90, 91-95, 97): "Ich lebe grad, da das Jahrhundert geht, / Man fühlt den Wind von einem großen Blatt, / das Gott und du und ich beschrieben hat / und das sich hoch in fremden Händen dreht. / Man fühlt den Glanz von einer neuen Seite, / auf der noch alles werden kann [...]". - Huppert hatte in den 1930er Jahren am Marx-Engels-Institut an der Marx-Engels-Gesamtausgabe mitgearbeitet, danach studierte er bis 1935 Literatur am Moskauer "Institut der Roten Professur", wo er Maxim Gorki kennenlernte. - Einliegend drei Belege in russischer Sprache, verso mit zwei eh. Gedichten, ebenfalls in russischer Sprache ("Derevya" ["Bäume"] und "Moreplavately" ["Matrosen"]), datiert in die 1920er Jahre in Berlin. Leicht gebräunt an den Rändern, der Schutzumschlag papierbedingt etwas brüchig. Der hs. Text teilweise mit Rot- und Grünstift markiert mit Markierung übersprungener Textteile.

An Egon Seefehlner (1912-97), damals Generalsekretär der Wiener Konzerthausgesellschaft, dem er zum Ableben von dessen Vater, Baurat Egon Ewald Seefehlner (geb. 1874), eines Eisenbahnfachmanns und Elektrotechnikers, kondoliert (1946) und betr. der Beendigung von dessen Tätigkeit als Mitglied der Kommission zur Beurteilung der freischaffenden Künstler (1950). - Felix Hurdes gehörte als Landesrat von 1936 bis 1938 der Kärntner Landesregierung an, wurde nach dem "Anschluß" Österreichs an das Deutsche Reich verhaftet und in das Konzentrationslager Dachau verbracht. "Nach seiner Entlassung 1939 hatte er u. a. mit Lois Weinberger Kontakt und war 1944/45 im Konzentrationslager Mauthausen. Hurdes gehörte 1945 zu den Begründern der ÖVP, war deren Erster Generalsekretär, 1945-66 Abgeordneter im Parlament, 1945-52 Unterrichtsminister, 1953-59 Erster Nationalratspräsident" (DBE). - Jeweils auf Briefpapier mit gedr. Prolific American playwright novelist and screenplay writer "Bride of Frankenstein" 1935 "Imitation of Life" 1934. TMS 1p 8½" X 11" n.p. n.y. dated 1923 February 22 in pencil in another hand. Very good. Quite mild age toning; four-punched at left margin not affecting text. Page from "Act I" of Hurlbut's play "Hail and Farewell" which was filmed in 1925 under the title "The Heart of a Siren." This double spaced page notes "April 1870" and begins by setting the scene: "The scene is the terrace of a hotel at Nice looking out to sea." and proceeds with dialogue between Comtesse Chateauriand and Comtesse d'Avillier. Almost no handwritten corrections -- only several small pencilled grammatical changes. Along the bottom in light black fountain pen it is inscribed and signed: "This is a page from the first draft / of 'Hail & Farewell' you are more / than welcome to it if it will make / a part of your collection / William Hurlbut." From the collection of Albert Johannsen 1871-1962 a University of Chicago geology professor who authored "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" University of Oklahoma Press 1950 the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject and accompanied by Johannsen's original 8½" X 11" file folder bearing a printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen. unknown

Ich nehme den freudigsten und wärmsten Antheil an diesem Ereignis und wünschte von Herzen daß es für Sie eine unversiegliche Quelle väterlicher Freuden werden und den Verlobten selbst zum Segen in Zeit und Ewigkeit gereichen möge [...]". - Nach einem Studium der Rechtswissenschaft an der Universität Göttingen unterrichtete Huschke zunächst als Privatdozent und wurde 1824 ordentlicher Professor in Rostock. Drei Jahre später wechselte er an die Schlesische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Breslau, an der er zweimal das Rektoramt innehatte und war ab 1841 Direktor des Oberkirchenkollegiums der Evangelisch-Lutherischen Kirche in Preußen, die 1845 vom Staat anerkannt wurde.

Widmungsgedicht in Pentametern für den aus Bunzlau gebürtigen Dichter und Orientalisten Andreas Tscherning (1611-59): "Cl. et eruditissimo viro Andreae Tscherningio poetae caes. laur. s. p. // Tscherningius ille, qui diu Parnassio / In monte vixit, musici mystes sacri / Frequens, amator pervigil mentis bonae [...]". Möglicherweise das Manuskript zu Huswedels Beitrag in der 1644 zu Tschernings Rostocker Promotion erschienenen Lobschrift "Acclamationes In Lauream Magistralem Viri Clarissimi Andreae Tscherningii" (VD 17, 125:018978A). Der hier verherrlichte Opitzianer Tscherning, der 1641 die erste deutsche Übersetzung einer arabischen Dichtung publiziert hatte, wurde anschließend in Rostock Professor der Dichtkunst. - Der aus Hamburg gebürtige und am Johanneum erzogene Huswedel wurde in Rostock Magister und studierte anschließend in Wittenberg und Leiden (wo er Joseph Justus Scaliger kennenlernte). Er wirkte in seiner Heimatstadt und in Rostock als Professor des Griechischen; wegen Konflikten mit den Hamburger Theologen blieb er ab 1628 vollends in Rostock. - Papierbedingt etwas gebräunt; kleine Bugfalteneinrisse. Selten.

American army general who served as a commander of the famed 9th Cavalry Regiment black soldiers known as "The Buffalo Soldiers"; as an Indian fighter Hutcheson participated with the 9th Cavalry in actions against the Oklahoma Indians the South Dakota Sioux and the Bannock Indians; co-authored a history of the regiment. Partly-printed ADS 1p 7½" X 3" Washington D.C. 1919 July 30. Very good. Handsome check drawn on The Riggs National Bank with a bank vignette at left made out in Hutcheson's hand to "Camp Quartermaster Laundry" for $9.88 and boldly signed. Adler he introduced the famed "Great Books" program eliminated intercollegiate football and made other radical curriculum changes; he authored many volumes on education issues and served in other influential positions including president of the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions which he founded in 1969. Accompanied by a copy of this scarce booklet "Amberglow of Abraham Lincoln and Ann Rutledge" West Leisenring PA: The Griglak Printery 1939 a 15-ppage 16mo pamphglet in prange wrappers. The up-and-coming 25-year-old Lincoln enthusiast self-published this essay in an edition of 300 copies. Good plus. Outer wrappers only a tad soiled and a bit edge-chipped but internally near -- tight and bright. Uncommon. unknown

The biographer of cowboy novelist Eugene Manlove Rhodes and executor of his literary estate this writer authored such titles as "A Bar Cross Liar: Bibliography of Eugene Manlove Rhodes" 1956 "California: The Golden Shore by the Sundown Sea" 1980 and other Western histories -- along with popular Whitman juvenile Westerns such as "Gene Autry and the Golden Ladder Gang" 1950 and "Gene Autry and the Big Valley Grab" 1953. Two ALsS each 1p 8½" X 11" and 7" X 10½" respectively Chico CA 1947 January 10 and February 11. Addressed to Owen Davies. Near fine. Fine content concerning Davies ordering copies of Hutchinson's edition of Rhodes' short story collection "The Little World Waddies" which he had designed and printed for him by the legendary printer/typographer/book designer Carl Hertzog. "We have been swamped with orders" writes Hutchinson "and have fallen far behind due to bindery output; we are filling orders in chronological sequence but have made an exception in your case." As an unrelated aside he comments: "I would judge that you are of Welsh extraction. the most soul-stirring experience I have ever had or expect to have was watching the debarkation of a Welsh regiment at Oran in Algeria when they marched from the quay up the steep sloping hillside into the town singing the 'March of the Men of Harlech'." Davies ordered 52 copies of "The Little World Waddies" by the way -- a book that today generally sells for several hundred dollars.
