Jaksch von Wartenhorst, August, Historiker (1859-1932).
Eigenh. Brief mit U. [Klagenfurt], 22. X. 1887.
2 SS. Folio.

JAMES GP. R. 1799 1860 G. P.
Autograph Letter Signed
This popular extraordinarily prolific British writer penned nearly one hundred novels such as "Richelieu" 1829 "The Gypsy" 1835 as well as plays poetry and historical writings such as "The Life and Times of Louis XIV" 1838 exceeding the voluminous output of his mentor Sir Walter Scott; later he turned to diplomacy serving as a British consul in America and vice-consul at Venice. ALS 2pp inlaid 4" X 6 3/4" Norfolk VA 1853 May 5. Addressed to M.M. Ballou at Gleason Pictorial in Boston 1820-95 Boston publisher novelist travel writer first editor of Boston Daily Globe. Near fine. "Please excuse my seeming negligence in not having sooner answered your note. When it arrived I was absent from home wandering about for a few days and the letter was mislaid It is thus only today that I have seen it and I hasten to apologize for acknowledging it at an earlier period thinking that in the mean time you have not thought very hardly of Your faithful Servant." Boldly attractively penned in brown ink. So profuse is James's apology though that he fails to mention the object of Ballou's note! Amusingly the very next year Ballou's illustrated pictorial founded 1851 passed along this unflattering tidbit from a London magazine: "The American papers report the particulars of a fire in the house of Mr. G.P.R. James whereby one storey was consumed. What a pity it didn't burn many more!" unknown

James Dennistou, Scottish Art Collector
Manuscript Signed Letter by a Scottish Art Collector, Concerning the Acquisition of Paintings by Crivelli.
Manuscript signed letter by Scottish art collector James Dennistoun to Lady Ann Cullum, while both are in Rome, concerning her acquisition of paintings by Crivelli, and making recommendation for a skilled local Italian restorer. 8vo. 3 pages in manuscript, double leaf measuring approximately 12,5 x 19 cm, with seashell watermark, integral address being simply 28 Corso, remnants of a green wax seal. Undated, but similar correspondence in the Cullum archives help to date this letter to the period before 1842. A small segment of mounting paper adhered to verso, loss to one corner at margin, text unobstructed, otherwise in very good condition. The paintings discussed in this correspondence are indeed treasures of antiquity, made by Carlo Crivelli (Venice c. 1430 - Ascoli Piceno 1495), Italian Renaissance painter of conservative Late Gothic decorative sensibility, who spent his early years in the Veneto, where he absorbed influences from the Vivarini, Squarcione and Mantegna. Crivelli's works are exceedingly scarce. Only two can be found today in Venice, both in the church of San Sebastiano. It is interesting to note that the present letter refers to more than one Crivelli painting, "the Crivellis... they" etc. Without seeing these specific art works, but holding the ancient artist in due high regard, Dennistoun states that they would surely equal Crivelli's other well-known and venerated pieces. He also estimates a value of 3,000 piastres [modest indeed for such an invaluable prize]. Manuscript

Jameson, Anna Brownell, English writer (1794-1860).
Autograph letter signed ("Anna Jameson"). No place or date ("Wednesday"), but probably late 1840s.
8vo. 3½ pp. on bifolium. To Anna Isabella Noel-Byron, "Lady Byron", the poet's wife: "Would the page of whom you were speaking last night, go to Lady Monson for a month or six weeks? - she only wants him while she is in London, & as it is of importance to her to have a boy of good character - & not easy to find one for so short an engagement she would be likely to overlook some outward deficiencies - moreover she is an excellent person & kind to all around her - particularly to her servants. Would you send the boy to 49 Park Street between 11 & 12 on Friday - if the situation suits him? I am sailing in extremest haste - & can only add my earnest hope that you are not the worse for yesterday [...]". - Jameson was a friend of Ottilile von Goethe, the poet's daughter-in-law. Her friendship with Annabella Byron dates from about 1845 and lasted for some seven years; it was brought to an end apparently through Lady Byron's unreasonable temper. The marriage between Lord and Lady Byron had lasted but a year, as Byron himself was given to fits of anger and maintained an incestuous relationship with his older half-sister Augusta Leigh. The couple separated in March 1816. Their only child, Augusta Ada Byron (Countess of Lovelace), was a gifted mathematician and is credited with creating the first algorithm intended to be carried out by a machine - in fact, the first computer program.
