8vo. 1 page. With autograph address. To his sister Carrie Gladys Weiss (1882-1959) in New York: "Dear sis. Gladys. Am here on a visit. Leave for Hannover for 1 day than [!] to Berlin. Regards & love [...]". - In August 1908 Houdini had begun his second European tour, starting in Germany, where he enjoyed a particularly enthusiastic audience with his recently developed "milk can trick". - It is surprising that Harry wrote directly to his sister, who had been almost blind since childhood and probably could not have read the card without help. Remarkably, the stamp is affixed at an angle turned 120° to the right: in the "stamp language" common between lovers of the time, this was as much as to say: "I dearly long for you", "You are my happiness" or "Always thinking of you". Another Houdini mystery?

This was his co-worker Albert Coates who was a professor at UNC. The only copyright date in the book is 1941 but the presence of an ISBN suggests that this book was printed about 1970 or later. This book is about House's youth in Halifax County North Carolina around 1900. House was Executive Secretary of UNC from 1926 to 1934. Lettre adressée à Bocage (1799-1862), acteur, puis directeur du Théâtre de l'Odéon.1 page format in-8°(21x14) sous chemise biographique. Très bon état.-De l'ancienne collection A. Baron, assureur, puis syndic-liquidateur à Bourges.Arsène Houssaye, de son vrai nom Arsène Housset, né le 28 mars 1815 à Bruyères-et-Montbérault, mort le 26 février 1896 à Paris est un homme de lettres français. Il est également connu sous le pseudonyme d'Alfred Mousse. Il a dirigé le quotidien populaire La Presse. Baudelaire lui a dédié les poèmes en prose du Spleen de Paris. En 1848, il participe au mouvement réformateur qui précède la révolution. De 1849 à 1856, il est nommé administrateur général de la Comédie-Française, où il fait entrer les pièces de Victor Hugo, d'Alexandre Dumas père, d'Alfred de Musset de François Ponsard ou de Léon Gozlan.

[ circa 1945 ], 30-53-42-32 pp. Fils du directeur de l'agence Havas Charles Houssaye, Henri Houssaye (1912-1970) fit partie du conseil de rédaction de la revue La Nouvelle Saison, avec Barjavel ou Jean-Louis Barrault. En 1945, il publia un roman "Lolita" deux ans avant Vladimir Nabokov. Dans le tapuscrit manifestement inédit de cette pièce de théâtre en cinq actes, Henry Houssaye évoque la résistance et les "partisans" en Normandie, chaque acte évoquant une année, de 1940 à 1944. HOWITT, William (1792-1879)
Autograph Letter Signed
This English author wrote poetry "The Influence of Nature and Poetry on National Spirit" 1814 and a wide variety of nonfiction such as "The Book of the Seasons" 1831 "The Popular History of Priestcraft" 1833 bestseller "The Student Life of Germany" 1841 and "The History of the Super-natural in all Ages and Nations" 1863; with his wife the noted poet and translator Mary Bothem they co-authored "The Literature and Romance of Northern Europe" 1852 and "Ruined Abbeys and Castles of Great Britain" 1864; in 1852 he spent two years in the Australian goldfields with his sons producing "A Boy's Adventures in the Wilds of Australia" 1854 and two other volumes. ALS 3pp 4½" X 7" Highgate England 1863 March 20. Addressed to C. Bathurst Woodman grandson of Charles Bathurst apprentice and later publisher with Benjamin Motte Jonathan Swift and Alexander Pope's publisher. Near fine. Intriguingly cryptic contents about a scroll of some sort: "It was very thoughtful of you to mention Whittington's tome but I was already aware of it not being the original one. With respect to Mr Hume and the scroll I am sorry that you had not time to home with him when he would be in or he studies it seems at University College and would be about in the day. I am sure he will have much pleasure any time that you are in Town in showing the scroll to you but I very much doubt whether he would sell it. At all events your purpose if you become the purchase of restoring it to the is very honorable to you." Interesting and worthy of further research. unknown

An einen namentlich nicht genannten Adressaten, dem er sein neues Buch vorstellt: "[...] Der erste Teil eines größeren pädagogischen Werkes (Die Grundlagen der Violinkunst) liegt in Max Hesse's Verlag Leipzig bereit zur Herausgabe. Es liegt mir ganz ausserordentlich daran ein Gutachten unserer hervorragendsten Pädagogen und Kritiker als Geleit für das Buch in die Öffentlichkeit zu gewinnen [...] Die Ziele, welche in der Arbeit angestrebt werden, sind solcher Art, daß die dem Buch aus seiner Natur heraus bedingte Interessensphäre weit über jene Ziele hinausreicht welche die zahlreichen, bisher erschienenen titelverwandten Werke für sich in Anspruch genommen, indem es sich hier tatsächlich um eine wissenschaftliche Grundlegung dieses Zweiges der Pädagogik handelt [...]".

An einen namentlich nicht genannten Adressaten, der es abgelehnt hatte, eine Besprechung seiner "Grundlagen der Violinkunst" zu schreiben: "[...] Ein wertvolles Gutachten [...] welche mir der seither verstorbene Musikschriftsteller Dr. Fried. von Hausegger Graz im Jahre 1898 zukommen ließ (die Arbeit war damals noch im Manuscript) hat mich ermutigt, Sie hochgeehrter Herr Doktor, ebenfalls um einige derartige Zeilen zu bitten [...]".
