An einen namentlich nicht genannten Adressaten: “Ich fürchte, daß Sie heute Abend das Bureau schon verlassen haben werden, wenn ich hinauskommen kann, und sehe mich deshalb genöthigt, zum brieflichen Verkehr meine Zuflucht zu nehmen [...] [August] Zang hat gestern Abend über die Referatsfrage nicht mit mir gesprochen u. ich hatte keinen Grund die Initiative zu ergreifen [...] Einen weiteren Punct bezüglich der Honorarfrage habe ich mit [Michael] Etienne eröffnet, will aber jetzt nicht darauf zurückkommen, um die Angelegenheit nicht zu compliciren [...]”. - Mannheimer war nach abgeschlossenem Studium der Rechte ministerial beschäftigt; daneben freilich schriftstellerisch als Kritiker und Essayist für die ‘Presse’ und die ‘Wiener Zeitung’ sowie als begeisterter Alpinist tätig, unternahm er mehrere Reisen auf den Mont Blanc, den Monte Rosa und in die österreichischen Alpen; daneben zählt er zu den “eigentlichen Begründern” des Schriftstellervereins “Concordia” (Wurzbach; zit. n. DBA I 801, 123).

The influential Church of England archdeacon converted to Catholicism in 1851 becoming Archbishop of Westminster in 1865 in which position he zealously promoted English Catholicism. Miniscule ALS 1p 3½" X 4½" London England 1864 October 12. Addressed to Mrs. Dickinson. Fine. At this time superior at the Oblatres of St. Charles in London which he founded in 1857 Manning asks a favor: "Will your kindness take me to the London Bridge Station tomorrow -- unless my hour is too late for you. I wish to leave here at 5 o'clock. I hope you are well: & have good news." Quite handsome little piece. unknown

An den Musikschriftsteller Josef Schrattenholz mit einer Absage zur Mitarbeit an Schrattenholzens Zeitung, jedoch mit der Zusage, diese abonnieren zu wollen: "Ich bin vollauf mit Vorbereitungen für die Crystal Palace Saturday Concerts und die schottische Saison beschäftigt und will Ihnen die Prospectes von beiden zuschicken sobald sie fertig und gedruckt sind. Ihr kleiner Cello-Neffe gab mir mit seinem Solo-Vortrag bei meinem am 8ten Mai stattgefundenen Benifiz Conzert abermals herzerfreuende Beweise von seiner hervorragenden musikalischen Begabung: Der Junge spielte wie ein Mann [...]". Der "Cello-Neffe" war Leonhard Schrattenholz, der Sohn des Pianisten und Violinisten Max Schrattenholz, der bei dem genannten Konzert "durch den Vortrag eines Romberg'schen Konzertes allgemeines Aufsehen und begeisterten Beifall erregt" hatte. "Die 'Times' nennt das Spiel des Knaben wahrhaft 'verblüffend' und der 'Standard' spricht die Ueberzeugung aus, dass der junge Mann in ein paar Jahren 'dreist seine Waffen mit Piatti und den ersten Violoncellisten messen dürfe'" (Breslaur, 139). - Auf Briefpapier mit gedr. Sehr seltene Vollmacht für Mansfelds Neffen, Hoyer Christoph von Mansfeld (1554-87), um in Vertretung Lehnsbriefe und Reverse betreffs des Lehens von Herzog Julius zu Braunschweig und Lüneburg (1528-89) zeichnen zu dürfen, da er, Peter Ernst, Statthalter des Königs von Spanien in Luxemburg sei: "Wir [...] constituiren, setzen unnd verordnen auch hiemit in Krafft dieses, [...] den wolgebornen unsern beßonderen freundtlichen lieben Vettern Hoyer Christoffen Graven und Hern zu Mansfeld gestalt In unserm nhamen, die lehnschafft solicher von hochermelten Herzogen zu Braunenschweich empfenklich herrörende Lehnstück mit gepuerenden Reverentz zu begern und zu empfahen auch gepürliche Huldt unnd eidts Pflicht zu thuhn [...]". - Die reichsunmittelbare Grafschaft Mansfeld wurde wegen Überschuldung 1580 von Kursachsen und dem Erzstift Magdeburg mediatisiert. - Mit Regest verso, einigen wenigen kleinen Randein- und -ausrissen sowie einigen winzigen Papierdurchbrüchen entlang der Faltlinien.

Autograph Letter Signed
The best-known Shakespearian interpreter of the late 19th century was this English actor who toured extensively and played Broadway to great success often producing and directing as well; his performance in London in 1888 in the title role of "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" earned him consideration as a suspect in the then-current Jack the Ripper murders. ALS 3pp lettersheet 5" X 8" New York NY 4 July 1895. Addressed to Charles Henry Meltzer. Very good. Lightly age toned with some discreet expert archival mends on folds. On letterhead of the Garrick Theater in which Mansfield premiered Meltzer's new play "The Story of Rodion the Student" a stage version of Dostoyevski's "Crime and Punishment" on December 3 the actor writes the playwright on some future play. In part: "I am glad to receive your report of progress and all your ideas seem Excellent. I shall also be more than pleased to receive the first act and -- I am sure -- to be pleased when I read it. It is also good to hear from a man whose motto appears to be: 'Labor voluptas'. When you have finished 'Le Pere Prodigue' you will I hope commence at once on a play for me." Meltzer 1853-1936 was an English dramatist and translator who penned a number of plays though the new play Mansfield refers to in this letter appears never to have been completed. Excellent stage content -- and attractive despite mild wear. unknown

The huge golden Prometheus figure in the fountain in front of Rockefeller Plaza in New York 1934 is one of this sculptor's best known works. ALS "Paul M" 1p 6" X 7" New York NY 1961 October 23. Addressed to Carl Haverlin president of music licensing giant Broadcast Music Inc. Fine. Regards the stir caused by the New York Civil War Centennial Commission's effort to have a casting of Manship's 1937 equestrian statue of General Ulysses S. Grant erected in front of Grant's Tomb: "Enclosed please find the letter I have just received from Mrs. Wm. Pigott Cronan Gen. U.S. Grant's Grandaughter." Boldly penned in blue ballpoint. Also present is a copy of Cronan's letter of support some newspaper clippings regarding the controversy and a few miscellaneous papers. Accompanied by a fine 10" X 8" glossy photograph showing Manship Haverlin and Bruce Catton examining a scale model of the Grant statue. Superb little collection regarding this controversial proposal. unknown

Schöner Gelehrtenbrief an einen "optimo Hirschio" (möglicherweise den Ansbacher Rat und Horazübersetzer Georg Ludwig Hirsch [1731-1815]?) mit einem Lob seines einstigen Gegners Friedrich Schiller. Übersendet zwei Gedichte, davon ein Schillersches, das der Dichter allzu streng gekürzt habe, sowie als Geschenk eine eigene Publikation (Mansos 1801 erschienene "Vermischte Schriften") und bittet um die Rücksendung eines Buches: "Tui me semper, ut decet, memorem esse Teque, quanquam non in oculius habere, tamen in sinu, quod aiunt, ferre animoque cernere et tenere, tria haec, quae Tibi mitto, testentur. Primum ad te Dominum redit egregium Schilleri melos, e quo profecto plura, quam debuit, exulare poeta iussit. Dein misit mihi equitum praefectus a Wallenrodt, idem, si bene memini, quocum in deversorio, ab urbe Parisiorum nomen mutante, coenavimus, quique, ut nosti, mire doctus sibi videtur, carmen Latinum, Alcaio metro scriptum, neque bonum, neque malum [...] Rogat, ut perlegas [...] Addidi denique lene munus, libellum, qui Seria mea Ludicris mixta continet [...] Haec amicus amico prodo, rogans, ut ne tetrico Catonis vultu adspicias, quae jocans, amans, dolens, querens, irascens, modo pressius, modo elatius scripsi [...] Opus mihi est comentatione Schwabii de vi, quam veterum exempla, ad imitandum proposita, in aevi nostri ingenia habent. Quam cum Te perlegisse existimem, reddas peto [...]". - Manso hatte im sogenannten Xenienstreit noch heftig gegen Schiller Partei genommen; umgekehrt verspotteten Schiller und Goethe in ihren "Xenien" Manso. Schon 1795 hatte Manso in der "Neuen Bibliothek der schönen Wissenschaften und der freyen Künste" Schiller für seine "ununterbrochene widerliche Mischung von gelehrt aussehenden abstrakten und schöngeisterischen Phrasen" gegeißelt. - Zuletzt 1865 in der Sammlung Robert Weigel nachgewiesen. His work comprises sculpture groups, portrait busts, war memorials and tombs in Berlin, Schwerin, Angermünde and other German cities. - Traces of a postmark. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.

Manuscript Ledger, Merchant Ship
Manuscript Ledger from an Eighteent Century Merchant Ship Called 'Dublin', Dated 1-29 January 1755, Naming British Firms Dealing in Fine French Linens and Wine.
8vo. 2 pages of text written recto and verso on a single leaf watermarked with a fleur-de-lis, measuring approximately 22 x 23 cm. Age-toned, small chips to extremities, otherwise in very good condition for its age and origin. Trading merchandise such as fine Bordeaux wine known as claret, and French linen cloth, to affluent British clients and brokers, the merchant and his vessel have yet to be identified, although this simple document attests to the interests of both middle and upper classes of Great Britain in the eighteenth century. In this period, fine claret was a symbol of wealth and power in England, both in political and religious sectors, subsequently creating a significant revenue source for the Crown. The Bordeaux wine was prominent in both court and church, consumed heavily by high society aristocrats, while playing a central role in the Eucharist. During the 1750s, the French were favouring cotton, calico, and some silk over the traditional wool and linen textiles. French style was defined by elaborate court dress, colourful and rich in decoration, worn by such iconic fashion figures as Marie Antoinette. Britain, however was characterized by a propensity for practicality. Simple and modest, durable and inexpensive fabrics were best suited for the popular outdoor lifestyle and portraiture. The shift in styles in France provided an excellent purchasing opportunity for the English to purchase linen at a desirable cost. The merchant/captain's document begins on January 1st 1755, presumably at the onset of a world voyage, with "Cash to Stock £2000 Received from my Father to Begin the World... [Trade/Voyage?]" Ports of call include Roan [Roan, County Tyrone, Ulster, Northern Ireland], and Nanz [Nantes, France]. Claret and linen are purchased from France, and pure Irish butter brought for trade on consignment. Barrels of beef are also sold on consignment. Sundries and repairs to the ship are further noted. Transactions are dated at the center top of each entry, and tallied in Pounds Sterling to the right. This early document appears to have an interesting American connection as well, as two of the transactions involve Swift & Company, one of these being a purchase of beef. The captain first takes a deposit of £1000 on January 2nd, then charges the company on the 29th for 125 barrels of beef consigned by a Charles Curry. Manuscript

Manuscript Nautical Documents - Ceylon
Light Vessels at Ceylon: Two Manuscript Nautical Documents, being Memorandums Pertaining to the Temporary Light Houses at Great Basses Reef and Little Basses Rocks Off Southern Shores of the Island.
The light vessels being the predecessors of the two permanent lighthouses of Ceylon fame, situated some fourteen kilometers apart off the coast of Yala National Park. Two folio documents: April 1869 double leaf true copy of a memorandum on winds and currents at Little Basses; April 1870 single leaf notice to sea captains announcing the temporary lighthouse near the Great Basses, issued by Colonial Secretary Henry Turner Irving (later Governor) and penned in a secretarial hand; both on blindstamped stationery of the United States Commercial Agency of Ceylon measuring approximately 20 x 32 cm. Slight age-toning, otherwise in very good condition, rare documents connected to two offshore lighthouses which are among the most famous in Asia. This fascinating and detailed manuscript lighthouse report, was made prior to the actual lighthouses having been constructed, by a sea captain who lived on the light ship anchored off the Ceylon southern shore for at least seven years, making important observations and providing light for navigators. The first document is an annual report by John Buchanan, master of the light vessel at Little Basses, describing seasonal wind and weather conditions, sea currents, tides, monsoons and storms, over the period of one year. The captain also describes steamships having difficulties making the passage to shore. This document being a true copy of the original made in April 1869 by Thomas Steele, Assistant Government Agent at Hambantota, who took a noteworthy interest in local antiquities and Sinhalese literature. [An admiralty notice based on Buchanan's memorandum, though slightly edited, was published in the London and China Telegraph, Vol. 12, May 16, 1870, and also in The Nautical Magazine and Naval Chronicle for 1870]. Excerpts from Buchanan's lightship memorandum: ".... at Little Basses Rocks, Ceylon, during 13 months as observed from the Light Ship." "January [1869]... It would not be inaccurate to say that a strong current continues throughout January coming from the NNE from the Bay of Bengal setting S.S.W. Sea crossing very rough all the month.... both wind and tide against them...difficult for ships to get to the Northeast. It would be well not to attempt to do so." When the sun goes to the northward of the Light Ship, there is no more N.E. monsoon... in the event of a vessel making Dondra Head when bound to Galle, which is not uncommon the Master should never attempt to beat to Galle, but recross the line." End Excerpts. "Notice to Mariners, Bay of Bengal. Temporary Lighthouse near the Great Basses" heads the second document, which was issued by Colonial Secretary Henry T. Irving at Colombo in April 1870. Irving became a colonial governor not long after. Here too, prior to construction of a permanent structure, the admiralty anchored a temporary light-vessel upon which was mounted a revolving signal. This announcement came approximately one year before placement of the first stone for the lighthouse, and four years before it would begin operation. Excerpt from Irving's notice to mariners: "... it is hereby notified... that a light-vessel, exhibiting at an elevation of 38 feet above the sea, a red revolving light at intervals of 45 seconds, has been placed... at a distance of 3/4 of a mile from the N.E. rock of the Great Basses Reef... The vessel carries two balls vertical at the Mast Head." End Excerpt. Sir Henry Turner Irving, GCMG (1833-1923) was a British Civil Servant and Colonial Administrator. He first served as acting Governor of British Ceylon. In 1873-1874, he served as Governor of the Leeward Islands. In 1874-1880, he served as Governor of Trinidad and Tobago. In 1882-1887, he served as Governor of British Guiana. He was the first Governor of Trinidad to occupy the Government House, now known as the President's House. Notes on the lighthouses that subsequently replaced the "light-ships" described above: Great Basses Reef Lighthouse is an offshore lighthouse in the south of Sri Lanka. Accessible only by boat, it is located on a reef 13 km off the coast of Yala National Park, near Little Basses Reef Lighthouse. The necessity of a lighthouse at this location was acknowledged in 1856, a design of an iron tower on a granite base was suggested and costs began to be incurred without fruition. A new design by Alexander Gordon and Sir James Nicholas Douglass was approved in 1867. The executive engineer in charge was James' brother William Douglass. Two steam vessels were used, each capable of carrying 120 tonnes of stone, and each equipped with the appropriate lifting gear. Each support block weighed 2 to 3 tons. The first stone was laid in December 1870, the last in late 1872 and the light was lit in March 1873. The cost had been £63,000, of which £40,000 had been expended to no effect before Trinity House and William Douglass were involved. Little Basses Reef Lighthouse is an active offshore lighthouse at the southern end of Sri Lanka. It is located on a reef called Kuda Ravana Kotuwa (Fort of Little Ravana), formerly called Little Basses by the British when they invaded Ceylon. It is fourteen km off the coast of Yala National Park and north east of the Great Basses Reef Lighthouse. It was completed in 1878, built by William Douglass using the same steam ships, crew and workers as the Great Basses Reef Lighthouse. Designed by Sir James Nicholas Douglass, Little Basses lighthouse was one of a limited number of lighthouses that were designed to house the large Hyperradiant Fresnel lenses that became available at the end of the 19th century. Four of these lenses were used in Sri Lankan lights, all made by Chance Brothers in England. The lighthouse is close to Daedalus Rock, site of the sinking of HMS Daedalus (1811). 8vo. 32 page German manuscript, a poetic or theatrical composition dealing with California and dedicated to Queen Marie, Consort of King George V of Hanover, during the California Gold Rush. Dedication page, written in French, signed and dated by 'Gontard' who was an affluent art collector and chairman of an elite German art museum, and whom had evidently just met the Queen in person at the Exposition Universelle in Paris. Exquisite red morocco binding by Hof-buchbinders Wilhelm Ermold (binder to the Royal Hanover Court), beautifully finished in gilt with a crowned monogram 'M' for Marie, royal blue cloth endpapers, satin bow dividers. Evidence of an imbedded gift-wrapping ribbon to boards, slight foxing to first few leafs, otherwise very good condition, internally clean and bright, a pleasing work in an elegant binding fit for royalty. Title: Die Reise nach Californien. Nach dem französischen bearbeitet von Eduard Suhren. [A Voyage to California. From the French, edited by Edward Suhren.] The ambiguously titled manuscript may be a German rendition of the French theatrical opera by Dondey Dupré titled "Le voyage en Californie ou notice explicative du panorama" which concerned travels across the United States and explorations in the West - by John Charles Fremont, first explorer to cross the Sierra Nevada in winter, foremost US Senator, abolitionist, who prospered during the California Gold Rush. Content includes the explorer's sighting of pines in the Sierra Nevada oak forest at 3500 feet, melting gold, and so forth. Frémont's father was a native of France, who died only eight years after the French Revolution. As such, his gallant endeavours and accomplishments in the New World would certainly garner much attention in France, as with other European nations with colonies abroad. The French opera was first publicly performed 8 August 1850 in Paris, at the Théâtre des Variétés. Gontard, who met the queen, and dedicates this manuscript to her, may have been involved in a German production, performed for the House of Hanover. A full page dedication inscription, in French, is addressed to the Queen of Hanover, by Huguenot descendant Jakob Friedrich Moritz Gontard (1826-1886), chairman and administrator of the Städel art museum in Frankfurt, officially the Städelsches Kunstinstitut und Städtische Galerie. Queen consort of Hanover from 1851 to 1878, née Princess Marie of Saxe-Altenburg, recipient of this dedicated manuscript, was the wife of King George V of Hanover, the last monarch of the short-lived Kingdom of Hanover. In his dedication, dated Hanover, 12 July 1855, Gontard thanks the monarch for having come to see his panorama at the International Exhibition held on the Champs-Elysées, stating that her visit inspired the work which forms the volume, and which he humbly offers to her. He references materials which were given to her onsite, which would elucidate the obscure details of the creative piece. The date indicates that King George V and Queen Marie of the short-lived Kingdom of Hanover attended the event in its first eight weeks. Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom paid a visit to the Parisian Exhibition in August. Nine pages, on eight quarto and octavo leaves. In Italian. Occasional creases and minor isolated foxing, very good. Accompanied by typescript translations. Manzù here writes extensively to Marcelo de Ridder, gallery owner and art dealer in Buenos Aires, concerning the nuts and bolts of an exhibition of his works de Ridder is organizing for late 1949. Always polite, but frequently exasperated, Manzù deals with burdens he feels are de Ridder's responsibilities (customs, shipping, etc), and is justifiably upset when, on 27 December 1949, he writes: "La mia mostra si è aperta e chiusa a mia insaputa senza nessure sapere dagli organizzatori la minima notizia, e questo nonostante le mie risetute preghiere, alle quali non è mai stato risposto. Non ho avuto nemmeno il Catalogo della mostra. Di tutto questo sono veramente stupito, veda di avvicare a quel minimo di gentilezza informandoni almeno dove si trovarro ora le mie opere [...]" ("My exhibition has opened and closed unbeknownst to me, and without my having received the slightest notification from its organizers, despite my repeated requests which were never answered. I did not even receive a catalogue of the exhibition. I am truly amazed at this, could you try to at least have the courtesy to let me know where my works are now [...]", transl.). The 16 February 1950 letter is far more conciliatory and grateful, perhaps as a consequence of having received the exhibition documentation and photographs, with which he is pleased, as well as received proceeds so far of "two hundred thousand lire". - Manzù is most widely known for his public works of sculpture, including the bronze doors at St. Peter's Basilica and two reliefs for Rockefeller Center, but was accomplished and prolific in other media as well. During WWII, his anti-Fascist drawings forced him underground, and in 1968 he was awarded the Lenin Peace Prize for his public stance against Western policies in Southeast Asia.

Oblong 8vo (17 x 11 cm). An exceedingly rare vintage blue ink signature, in Chinese characters, inscribed to the verso of a printed invitation to a Buffet Party hosted by the China-Latin America Friendship Association at the Xinqiao Fandian (Hotel) on Thursday, 27 October 1960 at 6.30 pm, "in order to kindly see off the cultural friendship delegations of Latin American countries". Chinese text printed in red on off-white paper. Encapsulated. A fine signature obtained during a 1960 Buffet Party in honour of Latin American communists, held at Beijing's Xinqiao Hotel and attended by Mao Zedong. The China-Latin America Friendship Association, who hosted the venue, was established in Beijing earlier that same year, in March 1960, and soon became the general fortress of cultural infiltration into Latin America. The U.S. diplomat Roy R. Rubottom Jr., who served as Assistant Secretary of State for Inter-American Affairs (1957-60), noted that, also in 1960, Mao Zedong appeared to have "gone out of his way" to receive Latin American Communist leaders and to exhort them to give their full backing to the kind of revolution he favoured. The following year, the Xinqiao Hotel would be the site of a major conference hosted by Zhou Enlai, who there encouraged intellectuals and cultural activists to start work again. - Following the end of World War II, the Communist movement was flourishing in Latin America, and as early as 1947 Mao Zedong was prompted to remark that "the Latin American peoples are not the obedient slaves of United States Imperialism". Chairman Mao and the Chinese communists' goal was the defeat of United States Imperialism, and Latin America was regarded as vital to attaining this goal, as it supported Mao Zedong’s theory of the establishment of rural revolutionary base areas. Chinese interest and activities in Latin America increased sharply in the early 1950s (there were believed to be 250,000 card-carrying communists active in the area), and the countries were of considerable interest to the Chinese and viewed as a fertile ground for advancing Communism, not least Red China's own brand of the ideology. - Some very light overall soiling to both sides, barely affecting the signature. An attractive example of one of the rarest and most sought-after autographs of all major political leaders and cultural icons of the 20th century. First French edition, containing an extremely rare calligraphic inscription, brush-written by Mao Zedong in 1965 shortly before the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution, to the foreign diplomat Charles Meyer (1923-2004). The French national Meyer spent 25 years in Indochina, including 15 years in Cambodia during the 1950s and 1960s, serving King (and later Head of State) Norodom Sihanouk as media and public affairs advisor. He formed part of the Sangkum government’s inner power circle and served as the author and editor of many official government publications. He also wrote several books on Cambodia, including the historical accounts "Behind the Khmer Smile" (Plon, 1971) and "The French in Indochina: 1860-1910" (Hachette, 1996). Meyer left the country in 1970 in the wake of the coup d’état and the advent of the Khmer Republic. - When in the early 1960s Prince Sihanouk came to recognize revolutionary China as Cambodia's most valuable ally, Meyer took part in several high-level meetings in Beijing and on the Yangtze River that the Prince held with Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, and Chairman Liu Shaoqi. He was present at the 1964 talks with Zhou Enlai to promote Khmero-Chinese friendship and a member of the Cambodian delegations in 1964 and 1965. It was on one of these diplomatic missions that Mao Zedong honoured Meyer by this exceptionally rare token of his esteem. - Finely preserved. OCLC 42966802.

Narrow 8vo. 1 p. Steel-engraved state insignia printed in red to head of sheet. Menu card for the state banquet in honour of the Pakistani statesman Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy (1892-1963), who only a month earlier had become Prime Minister. The card is signed by Mao and Suhrawardy, as well as by five Chinese statesmen: Zhou Enlai (1898-1976, the official host and Premier of the PRC), Huang Yanpei (1878-1965, Vice Premier of the State Council and Minister of Industry since 1954), Peng Zhen (1902-97, Mayor of Beijing, deposed in 1966 but rehabilitated in 1979 and later Chairman of the National People's Congress), Chen Yun (1905-95, leading economic politician, Party Vice Chairman and later one of the major architects and important policy makers for the Chinese economic reform), and Zhu De (1886-1976, Vice Chairman of the Communist Party and of the PRC, long the Commander-in-Chief of the People's Liberation Army and Mao's military advisor since the 1930s). - During this first visit to China by a Pakistani Prime Minister, the delegations discussed matters such as the exchange of goods (coal for cotton) and industrial development, improvements in water management and the training of engineers. In his conversation with Suhrawardy, Zhou sought to dispel fears of Chinese hegemony: China herself, he pointed out, had suffered under Western colonialism and now wished to pursue industrial development in the spirit of peaceful co-existence with all countries, based on mutual respect. Zhou insisted to a skeptical Suhrawardy that the education of the current generation of Chinese political leaders would ensure that future generations would not commit war or aggression. - A little sunned showing very light traces of matting along the edges, otherwise flawless. Signatures by the "Great Chairman" Mao are extremely rare; an ensemble of signatures by several important figures of the first generation of leaders of the People's Republic is almost unprecedented in the trade.

This American playwright director and stage manager began as a stage manager then became the "New York World" drama critic which he promptly quit upon the success of his first play "A Flower of Yedda" in 1898; he directed and managed well-known theatres but is remembered for "The Boomerang" 1915 "The New Henrietta" 1913 and "The Hottentot" 1920. AMS 1p 7 3/4" X 8½" n.p. n.y. Very good. Lightly age toned; two file holes at left not affecting text. Full page of bold neatly pencilled text on this cheap lined notebook paper head "WN-59" and beginning: "It is no longer required of the chief or ruler to be a great fighter himself. It is enough for him to see that his fighting men are properly organized and officered. What is especially required of him is intelligence executive ability foresight justice -- wisdom." Not seemingly a working draft page from a drama though further research required as we have not been able to identify the text. In a blank area at upper right Mapes signed boldly in brown ink dating it "March 4 1923." From the collection of Professor Albert Johannsen author of "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" University of Oklahoma Press 1950 the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject. Johannsen requested working draft pages from authors so it's possible this manuscript leaf predates its 1923 date by quite a bit. Also present is Johannsen's original 8½" X 11" file folder bearing his printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen. unknown
