Letter on author's personal "Tallahassee" stationery. Shaara was a lifetime writer but consistently struggled with the page. and publishers apparently. As time would tell he had but one truly great book in him although he dreamed of an autobiographical Shakespeare novel that would top "The Killer Angels". Interestingly Shaara also wrote the book "For the Love of the Game" later published and adapted to the Kevin Costner film of the same name. The Killer Angels was Shaara's Pulitzer Prize winner and is most certainly the book he is remembered for. <br /> <br /> In part "Please excuse me for taking so long to answer your letter. First I was out of the country and then when I go back I was sick for a while - one problem was drugs overdose after a motorcycle accident." Boldly signed at the conclusion in blue ink. While I do intend to be a candidate next year I have not formally announced my candidacy as yet. I have however set up a committee with the FEC to receive contributions and finance the travel which I am undertaking to "test the waters" for a Presidential race in the next few months."<br /> <br /> On Official United States Senate letterhead. Boldly signed by Baker at the conclusion. In the end Baker well known for his involvement in the Watergate investigation did run for President in 1980. He went on to withdraw from the race after losing to Bush and to Reagan in the primaries. It was suspected that he would be chosen as the VP canididate under Reagan but Bush was eventually selected instead. A nice piece from the great election of 1980! This letter is of particular interest as Tennessee Senator Cordell Hull expresses without disguise his view of America and the trouble her citizens are in. In the third year of the great depression that lastest more than a decade Hull writes:<br /> <br /> "Many large groups of American people are in a frightful condition. They are not able to pay one half of their taxes for the past year. They are in in a most ugly state of mind. Without going into details I shall hope to see you and talk out with you some of the more important and pressing phases which are uppermost in our minds."<br /> <br /> On Official United States Senate stationery. Handsome condition blank legal form published by this noted early 19th century publisher of legal blanks; at the death of one of the sons of company founder Alexander Gould in 1884 "The American Stationer" noted "Legal forms bearing its imprint are known from one end of the country to another." This particular form printed on pale blue stock typical of the 1850s is an "Article of Co-partnership" and consists of boilerplate text with blank areas meant to be filled in by hand. Très intéressante correspondance autour de l'activité du groupe et de la revue Surréalisme Révolutionnaire, et notamment de René CHAR… Il a reçu réponse de Char à sa proposition de collaboration au groupe (inutile d'attirer ton attention sur l'importance de cette lettre, de l'appui moral acquis pour nous de R.C.…) et il transmet à Arnaud la copie conforme des passages intéressants ainsi qu'un poème inédit de Char destiné à la revue : " …Tu sais combien tes efforts et ceux de tes camarades sont fraternellement suivis par moi. Je crois sincèrement que vous ne devez pas vous alourdir au départ de vieux vagabonds comme nous. C'est une " façon d'exister " que vous proposez et que vous défendez, qu'il faut que vous imposiez à l'intérieur de votre parti, peut-être à travers quelques uns que vous aimez dont je m'honore d'être, et contre les clowns, les pourrisseurs, et les Saint-Just de pissotière. ‎This long-term Republican representative from U.S. Grant's adoptive hometown of Galena Illinois served this district in Northwestern Illinois for fourteen terms 1933-61. Partly-printed DS 1p 8½" X 11" Jo Daviess County IL 1926 October 15. Very good. Faint age toning. "Declaration of Intention" document issued by the U.S. Department of Labor Naturalization Service for one Andrew Boeckl a 24-year-old marble worker from Bavaria Germany who had arrived in New York in 1924. Most interesting is the printed text noting that "It is my bona fide intention to renounce forever all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince potentate state or sovereignty and particularly to The German Reich" these last three words inked in -- but better yet is the following printed text: "I am not an anarchist; I am not a polygamist nor a believer in the practice of polygamy." Entirely filled out in Allen's attractive hand in black ink and at lower right as clerk of the circuit court he signs boldly. A delightful provocative period piece reminiscent of the oaths of allegiance signed by Confederate soldiers at the close of the Civil War. The Third Reich and anarchy statements are classic 1920s with fascism encroaching upon Europe and anarchists such as Emma Goldman and Alexander Berkman capturing the headlines. The polygamy content seems a bit less obvious no waves of anti-polygamy sentiment sweeping the country but simply represents a typical post-World War One reaction against extremism of any sort. unknown‎
