WASHBURN, Bryant (1889-1963)

This leading man of crime and drama left the Chicago stage to appear in more than 300 films mostly silents starting at the Essanay Studios in 1913 right when they switched from their Chicago base to a California location; he often appeared in supporting roles in talkies finally retiring in 1947. IPS 3¼" X 5" n.p. 1913. Near fine. Superb sepia-tone oval-shaped head-and-shoulders portrait of a handsome young Washburn in suit and tie. Across his chest he boldly inscribes and signs in a dark ink: "Very Sincerely / Bryant Washburn / 'Essanay' / 1913." Washburn had just signed on with the up-and-coming Chicago firm -- he was local talent -- which was founded in 1907 and made its name largely with Charlie Chaplin and Ben Turpin comedies. IPS 7½" X 9½" n.p. January 1935. Near fine. Handsome sepia-tone closeup portrait of D'Orsay and then husband actor Maurice Hill smiling cheek to cheek. In a light portion at upper left she signs and inscribes boldly in blue ink: "To Eddie Kesner / a real live booster / Best of luck / Maurice and Fifi-Hill / Jan. 1935." D'Orsay married Hill in 1933 and divorced him in 1938 so photographs signed with this married name are uncommon. A delightful vintage image beautifully signed. unknown

The namesake son of the Florida senator and Confederacy's Secretary of the Navy 1812-73 himself served in the Confederate Navy then was elected Florida representative 1891-95 and senator 1897-1907. Printed DS 1p 8" X 3 3/4" Pensacola Florida n.y. likely 1897. Near fine. Lightly age toned. Printed receipt noting "RECEIVED of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Park Commission one copy of its Atlas of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga battlefields" boldly signed by the new senator "Hon. S.R. Mallory" in thick brown ink also noting his address as "Pensacola Fla." Congress first printed this commemorative volume in 1897 thus dating this signature; it sold well enough that a second printing of 4000 sets appeared in 1901. An attractive piece. unknown

A giant in the world of ophthalmology this oculist and inventor is best known for pioneering the development of the industrial borescope and other optical devices in use today; in 1920 he founded Lexon Instrument Company. TLS 1p 8½" X 11" Philadelphia PA 1957 January 12. Addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Bruno J. Gianetti. Very good. Cordial letter reading in part: "Dear Parents of a fortunate boy aged two named George: One of the finest things that can happen to a child is to have parents who are vitally interested in his future. It is a pleasure to meet such people. After the pleasant compliment you have paid me it is indeed fitting that I comply with your request for a photograph. One of the best photographs I have ever had taken was done at the request of my students of the Graduate School of the University of Pennsylvania and this I propose giving you rather than a latter more decrepid one taken this year." Bold full signature in black ink. Crampton also pencils "also his birthday" near his signature. Also present is the aforementioned photograph: IPS verso 8" X 10" Philadelphia PA 1958 February 12. Quite heavy stock half-length portrait of an older Crampton in three-piece suit hands in pockets gazing steely-eyed at the viewer. Nicely inscribed and signed by him on the verso in blue fountain pen: "George S. Crampton M.D. Born March 10 - 1874 / 2031 Locust Street Philadelphia 3 Pa. / My Best Wishes to / George Raymond Gianetti Born June 17 1954 / February 12 - '58." An exceptional pair. unknown

This career politician served as a Republican congressman from Pennsylvania 1877-89 U.S. Ambassador to Mexico 1889-93 and Assistant Secretary of the Interior under McKinley and Roosevelt 1897-1907. Printed DS 1p 8" X 10½" Washington DC 1898 December 2. Very good. Mildly age toned. Handsome printed certificate in a variety of ornamental typefaces with American Eagle crest testifying to the authenticity of a copy of a document from the Office of the Commissioner of Pensions signed boldly by H. CLAY EVANS 1843-1921 -- at that time Commissioner of Pensions 1897-1902 and previously two-time mayor of Chattanooga Republican congressman from Tennessee 1889-91. Further statement below this testifies to Evans' position and is signed boldly by Ryan as "Acting Secretary of the Interior" -- the then-current interior secretary Cornelius Bliss apparently temporarily out of commission. Large red flute-edged paper seal at lower left intact and handsome as are the two lengths of baby blue silk ribbon that run underneath it and up to the upper left of the document. On October 4 1929 a bit of aviation history took place in Punxsutawney Pennsylvania when the Grube Airport officially opened and the first airmail from that airport was flown; Transcontinental Air Mail Service Datin flew 2200 letters to Pittsburgh 300 of them signed by him; two days later he died in a biplane crash during a stunt exhibition at Ebensberg Pennsylvania. Signed Postal Card heavy stock 9¼" X 5" Punxsatawney PA 1929 October 4. Addressed to George W. Kessler. Very good. Mild bit of wear. One side of this large picture postcard depicts a typical airplane of the day likely a Transcontinental Air Mail Service plane soaring amidst a cloudy sky. The message side bears the 5-cent "Air Mail" stamp and a McKeesport Pennsylvania cancellation of 1929 October 8. The message portion bears a finely printed note: "Dear Sir: -- It was my privilege to carry your Air Mail yesterday. Thanks very kindly for your patronage. My reward will be your continued use of the Air Mail." Above the closing word "Pilot" Datin signs boldly in black ink. At center of this side is a large square special cancellation honoring the dedication of the Grube Airport and indicating "Friday October 4 1929 / Punxsatawney - Pennsylvania." A handsome and decorative piece with a two large blue and red stripes running horizontally across the top with "VIA AIR MAIL" printed between. The record shows that special airmail envelopes were selling well on that day at the dedication -- presumably this very type of commemorative card bearing this special one-day-only cancellation. This would have been one of the 300 items signed by Datin flown on that very day. Ironically by the time this was further cancelled in McKeesport Datin had been dead for two days. A most unusual and scarce aviation and philatelic item. unknown

In 1927 this surgeon and urologist founded the revolutionary Hitchcock Clinic in Hanover New Hampshire -- the nation's first multi-speciality group practice -- and became its president in 1943 for many years; from 1927 until 1945 he also served as dean of the Dartmouth Medical School. TLS 1p 5½" X 8½" Hanover NH 1967 April 14. Addressed to Basil O'Connor 1892-1972 FDR's well-known law partner. Very good. Two file holes along top not affecting text. On "Hitchcock Clinic" letterhead Bowler regrets missing O'Connor's 75th birthday party. In part: "A flagrant imposition -- but I am sending under separate cover a copy of proceedings at your 75th birthday luncheon in New York. Will you autograph it for me I would like to leave it for my grandchildren -- that I knew such a man. I regretted missing it more than I can tell you -- was starting on my way but big storm and no planes and got stuck. I have never read a comparable list of honors and decorations for contributions for the good of humanity. You must be very happy and can be justly proud." This wealthy clothing merchant made a name for himself as mayor of New York when during the infamous Draft Riots of 1863 he refused to waver in his support of the draft. Partly-printed DS 1p 8" X 3 3/4" New York NY 1863 November 9. Very good. Cancellation slashes lightly touch one letter of signature. City check printed in blue and drawn on the Broadway Bank from the "Election Expenses" account paying $125 to Terence M. Lynch for voter registration services rendered. Large and ornate with a nautical theme vignette featuring a sailor and a Native American maiden. Signed boldly in brown ink by Opdyke as mayor Matthew T. Brennan as Comptroller and F.B. Autograph Letter Signed
Known in the German-speaking world as "Ernst von Osterreich" this son of Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian II and Maria of Spain was educated with his brother Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II; in 1573 and 1587 he was a candidate for the throne of Poland; from 1576 on he served as governor of the Archduchy of Austria in 1590 he was named governor of Inner Austria; from 1594 until his death he served as governor of Spanish Netherlands. ALS in Italian 1p lettersheet 7½" X 12" Vienna Austria 1579 March 26. Very good. Slight bit of age toning and quite minor foxing; inconspicuous small paper loss at left margin ¼" X 2¼" bears old but expert replacement. Overall attractive boldly written and easily legible. Writing to his cousin the Duke of Savoy Emmanuel Philibert 1528-80 Duke of Savoy 1553-80 it reads translation: "Sir: Mr. de la Cruz your ambassador gave me a letter from you several days ago and although I wanted to answer it before this I have been kept from it by various things and I hope you will not take offense at my delay. You may be sure that I shall always endeavor to do for you all that I can as I have often told Mr. de la Cruz who has probably so informed you. He has told me of the warmth and good will that you feel for me which I feel certain of and I do not know how to repay you except in kind as you may always find in everything that I can very well do you for. May God keep you as I would wish." Signed simply "Ernesto" with a flourish. Integral address leaf present on which Ernest notes "Al Señor duque de Saboya my primo" with a small deep burgundy wax seal bearing his family crest still present. A choice example of this autograph. Ernest died at the relatively young age of 42 making his autograph material quite scarce. unknown

Signed Ink Drawing
Pulitzer prize-winning editorial cartoonist with the "Chicago Tribune" 1903-45. Signed ink drawing 14¼" X 18" n.p. 1929. Very good. Slightest bit of edgewear and mild soiling. Labeled "Putting their Sincerity to the Test" by McCutcheon along the lower margin this single-panel cartoon depicts President Herbert Hoover full length front and center and facing right wonderfully executed as he stands in front of a circular table. With his arms he presents a large scroll laid out on this table which reads in full: "Proper defense requires military strength relative to that of other nations. We will reduce our strength in proportion to any other. It remains for the others to say how low they will go. It cannot be too low for us. Hoover's Armistic Day address." Hoover is saying "There! Now let's see if you're really sincere in wanting to give your tax payers some relief from their armament burdens." Behind Hoover at the left of the drawing a sketchy figure of a worried-looking Uncle Sam sits astride huge sacks of money labeled "U.S. Resources." In front of Hoover at the right of the drawing stand six attentive listeners: A portly "Britain" in Edwardian getup sports a Union Jack vest while alongside him a shadowy figure is hunched by the huge sack he hoists labeled "British Armament Burden on the Tax Payer"; "France" in military uniform scratches his bewhiskered chin while a similar hunched figure strains under a sack labeled "French Naval Burden on the Tax Payers"; behind these figures stand "Japan" in military uniform a "Japanese Burden" sack just visible at his side and "Italy" in military uniform sack at his side. On November 11 1929 Hoover had expressed these Armistice Day sentiments in a speech given before the Annual Convention of the Mississippi Valley Association. This drawing which McCutcheon dates "Nov. 13" at lower left is a superb and provocative example of McCutcheon's ability to humanize political concepts to make abstract notions concrete. And artistically this rendering of Hoover is among his very best. Signed simply "McCutcheon" at lower right as usual. unknown

This two-term Mississippi governor 1844-48 and senator 1854-61 of flawless reputation for integrity and oratory resigned the U.S. Senate and was elected to the Confederate Senate serving until the war's end; he also served as captain of Company H in the 18th Mississippi Infantry. This glass and steel executive was appointed minister to Russia by McKinley in 1897 then secretary of the interior in 1898 ably filling that post under Theodore Roosevelt as well until 1909 -- not to be confused with the Union general 1798-1870 of the same name. The Hurricane" 1937 was by far this he-man actor's best-known film; when not dressed in a loincloth playing a poor man's Tarzan in "Ramar of the Jungle" for television 1952-54 he appeared in turbans in films such as "Arabian Nights" and "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves"; committed suicide. Quite attractive printed lined form on which a telegram message would be written out longhand -- signed boldly by Hall presumably for a fan encountered in a Western Union office. Nice example from the height of his fame. This American supervised numerous memorable structures as Illinois state architect; he designed many Art Deco and Arts & Crafts style buildings in Chicago and in 1933 joined forces with the Burnham Brothers to create Burnham and Hammond. TLS 1p 7¼" X 9½" Washington DC 1929 August 1. Addressed to Waldemer Kaempffert at the Rosenwald Industrial Museum of Chicago 1877-1956 long-time "New York Times" science editor and director of Chicago's Rosenwald Museum which became the reknowned Museum of Science and Industry. Very good. Small staple hole at upper left; large grease-pencilled recipient's docket at upper right. On "The American Institute of Architects" letterhead which lists Hammond as president Hammond notes "I wish to assure you that the members of the Institute will be glad to cooperate in any way possible to make the Industrial Museum a success. No doubt the local architects here can be of assistance and I shall be glad to arrange a meeting with you and some of the leaders of the profession if that is your desire." Interesting: Some sources state that the name of Kaempffert's museum was changed to what it's known as today the Museum of Science and Industry in 1928 but here in 1929 apparently Kaempffert is still using the original name. At this time he was also casting about for a museum building so perhaps was approaching Hammond for assistance. It wasn't until the 1933 Century of Progress Exposition that it opened in the 1893 Columbian Exposition "Palace of Fine Arts" building. Bold handsome full signature. Accompanied by a second letter a TLS from Hammond's executive secretary EDWARD C. KEMPER executive director 1914-48 1p 8½" X 11" Washington DC 1929 July 29. Addressed to Waldemar Kaempffert. Very good. Staple hole at upper left. On "The American Institute of Architects" letterhead Kemper thanks Kaempffert for literature on his museum and notes he will forward same to Hammond. "Mr. Hammond has given liberally of his time for many years to public service and to Chicago civic affairs. we felt that the subject of your letter should receive his personal attention."
