Apparently writing to a former schoolmate Beers here offers up a lengthy reading list of English history titles reading in small part: "I am not an authority on English history -- pragmatic or general political history I mean -- but I can speak with confidence of some few works in that department. J.R. Green's 'Short History of the English People' in one volume is the best outline of the whole subject & is better than his larger book in four volumes. For the earliest period Kember's 'Saxons in England' Green's 'The Making of England' & Freeman's 'Norman Conquest' are the best. Sharon Turner's 'History of the Anglo Saxons' is a standard but somewhat antiquated." Then does the same for the medieval period individual reigns the 16th century the Stuart period the 18th and 19th centuries historical novels and English literature. "With All My Heart" which reached #15 on the Billboard charts in 1957 is this pop singer's most remembered hit although "Someday" and "The Way I Love You" also reached the charts; discovered by Chancellor Records' founder Bob Marcucci in early 1957 "With All My Heart" became one of that new firm's first big hits. Superb glossy IPS heavy stock 16" X 20" n.p. Chicago IL 1958 February 20. Near fine. Attractive head-and-bare-shoulders closeup of the singing sensation in barely-visible sequined top gazing upward soulfully. She inscribes the upper right area large and bold in black ink "To / Donald M. Burnell: / Best Wishes / & / Good Luck / Jodie / Sands / 2/20/58." This lovely and quite unusual item was likely created for some now-forgotten promotional purpose but it bears no photographer's credit or other identifications recto or verso. Choice vintage piece from the height of her fame -- likely one of a kind in this large format. Uncommon thus. Superb for display. unknown

Now as to the collection: It is shrouded in mystery. There was a drive here. to see that it stayed in the state. But rumor has it that the son sold it to parties unknown. I wish I could tell you more. I wish I knew more. Enclosed not present is a book of my own a bit of a sleeper which surprisingly to me sold 200000 copies last year. This Canadian Native American wrestlers known as "Marvelous Mohawk" was one of the greatest box office attractions of the early days of televised wrestling; he won the best-of-three-falls AWA World title in 1950 but had it taken away three days later in a controversial incident during a match with Gorgeous George; he died at age 41 of a self-inflicted gunshot wound an apparent suicide. Chicago 1905 December 16. Very good. Slightest of age toning; mounting traces on verso. On a 3�" X 1" slip neatly tipped to the center of this heavy card Heerman neatly and boldly writes out several measures of intricate music identifying it above as "Rondo Beethoven" it's from the third movement of Beethoven's violin concerto. On the heavy stock card above this slip he adds "To Miss F. Maryanna Neumann" and below the slip he writes "Remembrance of 16 Dec. 1905 / Hugo Heermann." Heerman taught in Chicago from 1906 to 1909 so this was written on the eve of his residency there. Quite attractive and very uncommon. unknown

Shortly after Joseph Pulitzer acquired the "New York World" in 1883 he hired this Russian-born writer journalist and artist -- whose fine etched portraits helped make him one of the fathers of modern newspaper illustration and incidentally helped make Pulitzer's new venture influential and profitable; he also illustrated such books as the first American edition of Tolstoy's "Ivan the Fool" 1891. Stunning original signed ink sketch heavy stock 7�" X 9 3/4" art board n.p. n.y. Very good. Pleasantly age toned to a creamy vellum color; lower left corner triangular roughly 4" X 2�" and lower right corner ditto roughly 2 3/4" X 1" creased and strengthened on verso but not terribly noticeable or disfiguring on recto; mounting traces on verso. A stunning head-and-shoulders portrait of General William T. Sherman in uniform later years gazing intently at the viewer. Finely executed in great detail Sherman appears tired and rather haggard with thinning hair and white beard. The eyes in particular are exceptionally well done and lifelike grabbing the viewer with their piercing intensity. Gribayedoff signs quite small at lower left noting "after photo" below his signature. We have not been able to pinpoint the occasion for this portrait or the specific photographs on which it is based but likely it accompanied a "New York World" story about Sherman. Gribayedoff originals are quite scarce and desirable. Despite mild corner damage a most handsome piece. hardcover

Prolific Missouri author of historical romances such as "Fran" "Lahoma" "Wolves of Holland" and "Stork's Nest." Two items: First a TNS 1p 8�" X 11" Plattsburg MO 1923 January 22. Addressed to Albert Johannsen 1871-1962 a University of Chicago geology professor who authored "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" 1950 the definitive reference work on the subject. Near fine. Nice note to an admirer: "Yours. finds me in my winter home far from my library so I cannot send the MS.-page of any published novel. However I inclose a page from my last book not as yet announced named but only tentatively 'Tandy Sees the World.' . The MS. notes for revision are in shorthand of my devising." Bold full signature. Second is the aforementioned page a TMS 1p 8�" X 11" n.p. n.y. Very good. On thin onion-skin type paper typed in purple ink this nice double-spaced typescript opens with characteristic Ellis prose: "The younger man stared at him perplexedly puzzled less by the dancing eyes which seemed scintillating with a rush of sparks blown in a wind than by the enigmatic utterances of the kindly mouth." Crossouts additions and deletions penned throughout including several lines added to the verso of the leaf. In the left margin vertically he writes "First draft of novel of 1922-1923 / J. Breckenridge Ellis / All rights reserved." Ellis does not seem to have published a book by this title but whether this title was published under another title warrants further research. Accompanied by Johannsen's original 8�" X 11" file folder bearing a printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen. A handsome pair. unknown

Legendary longevous comedian of radio film and television with wife Gracie Allen; ironically his late-life film "The Sunshine Boys" with Walter Matthou in 1976 earned him an Oscar and began the second phase of his career. Signed Postal Cover 6�" X 3�" cancelled in the city of Burns' birth New York New York on the day of his birth January 20 1974. Single 8-cent "George Gershwin" stamp at upper right. Fine. At the center Burns pens large and bold in blue ballpoint "Best -- / George Burns." Small portion or original transmittal envelope also present. An enterprising envelope honoring another George cancelled in an appropriate place on an appropriate date. Most unusual! unknown

This tough-to-categorize figure was an influential American man of letters who opined through his "The Easy Chair" column in "Harper's Magazine" which he edited and popular lecture tours. Handsome "Ashfield Mass. / October 6 1877. / With all good wishes / from / George William Curtis" 4�" X 3 3/4" slip. Very good. Slight show-through along left edge from mounting trace on verso. Accompanied by a fine 8�" X 11" glazed steel-engraved portrait by T. Cole from the 1882 "Century Gallery of One Hundred Portraits." unknown
