‎MANUSCRIPT HYMN BOOK ....‎

‎Hribeglias Gregory. Benedictina 1V Oct. Nov. Dec.‎

‎The fourth manuscript volume of a set of Benedictine hymn books relative to saints primarily in the Western European church with emphasis on Germany and Britain. The text incorporates hymns for every portion of a saint's day and mainly in rhyme with short occasional passages of prose. The rhymes are mediaeval or Renaissance and perhaps by the actual person whose name is given on the spine of the book. The scribe whether or not the author writes in a small beautiful hand perhaps of the seventeenth century. The author is aware of the famous papal prophecies of Malachi bishop of Armagh first published in the 1590s and perhaps written about that time so the text is probably datable to no earlier than the 17th century - though Malachi's prophecies may have been current in manuscript before that. There is no inclusion of Saint Pius V 1504-1572 a powerful figure and great friend to the Catholics of Spain and Holland amongst others. No musical scores are present. One would naturally think the volumes were originally for use in a Benedictine monastery or abbey. Black morocco over wooden boards with the remains of clasps Ms label on the spine marbled endpapers all page edges in gilt. Fine. 8vo. Book. hardcover‎

‎The Golden Mean‎

‎Toronto: Random House Canada 2009 On the orders of his boyhood friend now King Philip of Macedon Aristotle postpones his dreams of succeeding Plato as leader of the Academy in Athens and reluctantly arrives in the Macedonian capital of Pella to tutor the kings adolescent sons. An early illness has left one son with the intellect of a child; the other is destined for greatness but struggles between a keen mind that craves instruction and the pressures of a society that demands his prowess as a soldier. Initially Aristotle hopes for a short stay in what he considers the brutal backwater of his childhood. But as a man of relentless curiosity and reason Aristotle warms to the challenge of instructing his young charges particularly Alexander in whom he recognizes a kindred spirit an engaged questioning mind coupled with a unique sense of position and destiny. Aristotle struggles to match his ideas against the warrior culture that is Alexanders birthright. He feels that teaching this startling charming sometimes horrifying boy is a desperate necessity. And that what the boy thrown before his time onto his fathers battlefields needs most is to learn the golden mean that elusive balance between extremes that Aristotle hopes will mitigate the boys will to conquer. Aristotle struggles to inspire balance in Alexander and he finds he must also play a cat-and-mouse game of power and influence with Philip in order to manage his own ambitions. As Alexanders position as Philips heir strengthens and his victories on the battlefield mount Aristotles attempts to instruct him are honoured but increasingly unheeded. And despite several troubling incidents on the field of battle Alexander remains steadfast in his desire to further the reach of his empire to all known and unknown corners of the world rendering the intellectual pursuits Aristotle offers increasingly irrelevant. Exploring this fabled time and place Annabel Lyon tells her story in the earthy frank and perceptive voice of Aristotle himself. With sensual and muscular prose she explores how Aristotles genius touched the boy who would conquer the known world. And she reveals how we still live with the ghosts of both men. Dj has . ‎The In-Between World of Vikram Lall‎

‎New York: Alfred A. Knopf 2004 a novel that is rich in sensuous detail and political insight and brilliantly captures the tyranny of history and memory and questions one's role and responsibility in lawless times. Born in colonial Kenya Vikram Lall comes of age at the same moment as the colony which in 1953 is celebrating the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II even as the Mau Mau independence movement is challenging British rule. But while Kenya is being torn apart by idealism doubt and violent political upheaval Vic and his sister Deepa begin to search for their place in the world. Neither colonists nor African neither white nor black the Indian brother and sister find themselves somewhere in between in their band of playmates: Bill and Annie British children and Njoroge an African boy. These are the friendships that will haunt the rest of their lives. We follow Vic from a changing Africa in the fifties to the sixties -- a time of immense promise. But when that hope is betrayed by the corruption and fear of the seventies and eighties Vic finds himself drawn into the Kenyatta government's orbit of graft and power-brokering. Njoroge on the other hand can abandon neither the idealism of his youth nor his love for Deepa coerced into marrying within her Indian community. But neither the cynicism of the one nor the idealism of the other can avert the tragedies that await. Acute and bittersweetThe In-between World of Vikram Lallis told in the voice of the exiled Vic as he contemplates from the shores of Lake Ontario the tides that have brought him so far from home and the possibility that even as history was shaping him he has had a hand in altering its course. ‎Easter's Path to Pentecost‎

‎New York: Fleming H. Revell Company 1937. First Edition First Printing . Hardcover. Very Good/Good. 12mo. 160 pages. Hardcover with a green and white dust jacket. Moderate wear to the jacket which has a tear at the lower corner of the front cover. The spine of the jacket is a little toned. The binding is sound with secure inner hinges but the binding is a little cocked. INSCRIBED on the front flyleaf possibly in two hands: "May your feet always be in Easter's Path to Pentecost. / The Author / 'Faith Rees' Daddy.'" Dated beneath this "Lenten Season 1937." The inscription is printed; the second part of "The Author / 'Faith Rees' Daddy'" is written in cursive. It looks as if either Rees' daughter was noting that her father printed the portion at the top or Rev. Rees printed part and then signed "The Author" in cursive as to a friend of his daughter's. We don't know where Edward Jeffries Rees 1895-1970 was born but he is buried in St. Augustine Florida. He was associated with Drew Theological Seminary and Duke Univeristy. Rees' Preface was written at "Wilson Memorial" in Baltimore. In his "Acknowledgments" he notes "First of all I am indebted to the loyal congregation of First Methodist Episcopal Church South Washington N.C. for the privilege of preaching these sermons during the Lenten and Pentecostal Seasons of 1936; and for the co-operative response which they made to the appeals which followed their delivery.

Fleming H. The binding is sound with secure inner hinges and the text is sound and clean. INSCRIBED on the front flyleaf "To 'Parhaus' / Frm my author Daddy / Faith G. Rees / Lenten Season / 1935." Laid in loosely is a little flier from Cokesbury Press announcing new books for 1935. We don't know where Edward Jeffries Rees 1895-1970 was born but he preached in North Carolina and is buried in St. Augustine Florida. He was associated with Drew Theological Seminary and Duke University. The year following the publication of this book he was preaching at Washington North Carolina during the Lenten Season resulting in the 1937 book "Easter's Path to Pentecost" which we also have listed this week. The Introduction in this book was written by Paul B. Kern of Greensboro North Carolina. The Acknowledgment in this book was penned in "The Study / First Methodist Episcopal Church South / Washington N.C. / New Year's Day 1935" so it seems he spent a few years in "Little Washington" N.C.

Cokesbury Press hardcover‎
