Jars in Truckh außgetrewten Famos gedichts. Augsburg, Valentin Schönig, 1587.‎

‎(104) Bll. VD 16, ZV 875. BM-STC German 51 (ohne Variantenunterscheidung). Holzmann/Bohatta II, 5559. Vgl. OCLC 65517149 (nur Mikrofilm). Nicht bei Adams.‎

‎Tractatus quidam de Turcis. Nuremberg, Conrad Zeninger, [after 3 May] 1481.‎

‎4to. 22 ff. (a7, b8, c7: wants first and last blanks). 32 lines, Gothic type. Rubricated throughout, 3 four-line lombardic initials, red penwork decoration at beginning of text. Later cream-coloured calf in contemporary style, with blind rules and stamped cover title "Tractatus De Turcis". Third edition of this polemical treatise against the Ottomans. Mainly contains prophecies referring to the Turks (by Merlin, Cyrillus, Joachim of Fiore, St. Hildegarde, Catherine of Siena, Methodius, etc.). Also one of the earliest texts to mention Hungary, and one of the very few works printed by Zeninger: "Conrad Zeninger (from Mainz) produced a mere 10-odd books between 1480 and 1482" (cf. Halle 70). The prophecy referring to the King of Hungary (fol. a[5]r) is reprinted by Fraknói Vilmos, "Schlauch Lörincz szatmári püspöknek Török János által gyüjtött könyvtára", in: Magyar Könyvszemle 2 (1877), p. 77-90, at: 77f. (cf. Apponyi). The date is based on the mention of the death of Mehmet II on fol. A[4]v. - Some browning, with slight waterstain throughout in lower margin; first and final leaf washed. Slight paper flaw in fol. 1 (not touching text); final leaf restored. Faint traces of a later ms. page count are visible near the lower edge. Occasional 16th-century marginalia. A fine copy of this rare work, rubricated throughout. HC 15681. Goff T-503. GW M48133. BMC II, 460. BSB-Ink T-437. Oates 1077. Proctor 2229. Walsh I, 794. Pellechet 11154. ‎SPECIMEN BOOKS PRESIDENTS BINDINGS Presidents of the United States 1789 to 1897 spine title White House Vignette. Romaine cover title with portraits signed by Grover Cleveland and FIrst Lady Frances Cleveland‎

‎n. p. but Washington: U. S. Treasury Department Bureau of Engraving and Printing 1895. Hardcover. Near fine. Square octavo 21 numbered leaves of portrait plates plus four unnumbered. Bound in full crushed navy morocco with elaborate gilt tooling to boards spine compartments and edges with gilt dentelles all edges gilt and marbled endpapers. In near fine condition overall very well-preserved with a few tiny nicks to the corners and some scattered internal foxing mostly at the gutters and borders; and not on the proof images. The first two engravings depict the U. S. Capitol Building and the White House. The last two portraits of sitting President Grover Cleveland and his wife Frances are each SIGNED by their subjects in different ink below the images. The main contents consist of extremely well-executed and quite familiar portraits of the presidents; the very portraits that were used by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing on official U. S. banknotes. These Treasury Department specimen books were produced in very small numbers and presented to important diplomats cabinet secretaries members of Congress and the like. The proof engravings contained within were designed for use on official US banknotes though some of the images were likely never used on actual money. At the turn of the 21st century numismatic experts had counted 47 known examples. Several more have come to auction primarily numismatic since then but they remain extremely rare in the trade. No two specimen books are exactly alike. We could trade one example closely matching the contents of ours however that copy was in a different binding and did not include the signed portraits of President and Mrs. Cleveland.

The name "Romaine" is stamped on the gilt-stamped morocco label on the front board and is almost certainly the surname of the intended recipient of this volume though without any further context nor any bookplates or written provenance we are unable to identify this person.

When these books do occasionally come to auction there is much buzz. It is difficult to imagine a more interesting and treasured sort of volume for anyone who has an interest in numismatics and rare books. A rare chance to own a special volume of American printing history. (U. S. Treasury Department Bureau of Engraving and Printing) hardcover‎

‎8vo. 192 pp. With woodcut printer's device, headpiece and initial. Contemporary half vellum over marbled boards with faded handwritten spine-title. Second Italian, and second vernacular edition of the celebrated "Epistolae Magni Turchi", a best-selling 15th century literary invention by Laudivio Zacchia of Vezzano. Here translated by the ubiquitous Lodovico Dolce, these letters purport to represent the correspondence of Sultan Mehmet II, the conqueror of Constantinople and Byzantium (still alive at the time of writing), with governors and potentates from Persia to the Mediterranean islands, Greece, and Italy. Through this albeit fictitious collection Laudivio could highlight Turkish/Islamic territorial ambitions, as well as, by implication, political and ethical differences between East and West, not always to the credit of his Christian contemporaries. - A reissue of the 1562 first edition. The little collection proved hugely popular, calling for more than twenty incunabular editions, all now individually rare, and further reprints in the 16th and 17th centuries. - Occasional light brownstaining; lower corner of fol. C6 torn away, affecting a single letter; a tiny marginal paper flaw to fol. M2. BM STC-Italian 455. Göllner 1047. Blackmer 955. Edit 16, CNCE 26436. ‎A TOBACCONIST'S LEGACY AND A CITY'S POOR: A CURIOUS CHICHESTER PRINTING, 1814‎

‎1753 Chichester Poor Relief Act: With the 1772 Will of John Hardham Tobacconist of Fleet Street. A Rare Regional 1814 Reprint‎

‎J. Baxter Printer Chichester 1814. Booklet - Unbound Pages. Fair condition. This composite publication is a rare survivor remarkable both for its regional reprinting of a parliamentary act and for its role in the legal disputes surrounding Hardham's estate. Hardham well known in his day as a Fleet Street tobacconist and friend of David Garrick left the interest from his property to support the poor of Chichester. His heirs contested the will arguing that the growing number of poor placed an unsustainable burden on the estate; the Chancery decree printed here records the failure of that challenge. Hardham’s business had flourished through Garrick's patronage at Drury Lane where his snuff was famously recommended from the stage and his shop appears in several contemporary engravings of Fleet Street. For further biographical detail see Warwick William Wroth's entry in DNB vol. 24. A highly unusual and scarce 1814 Chichester printing combining two eighteenth‑century texts: An Authentic Copy of the Last Will and Testament of Mr. J. Hardham Tobacconist and Snuff Merchant of Fleet Street London originally dated 1772 together with the Chancery decree concerning its provisions; and An Act for the better Relief and Employment of the Poor; and for enlightening the Streets Passages and open Places within the City of Chichester… first issued 1753. The two works are here issued as a single folio the Act 18 pp. placed before the Will 13 pp. As a result the Act has borne the brunt of two centuries of handling: the printed first page is markedly discoloured creased and edge-worn; the text shows browning turned corners and scattered contemporary annotations. By contrast the Will protected as the second item remains notably clean and largely unmarked. The final leaf blank save for a contemporary ink note shows the expected wear of a page long exposed and has in turn shielded the contents behind it. The folio has been lightly folded along its height suggesting it once travelled in a pocket or bundle of legal papers. Size: Folio 17 x 28 cms. Category: Antiquarian & Rare; Special Interest. This item may require more postage than the rates shown for delivery outside the UK. If extra postage is required we will contact you before processing your order and you will be given the details and option to decline the extra cost. J. Baxter, Printer, unknown‎
