‎Euclid [i.e., Cleonides] / Péna, Jean (ed.)‎

‎[Eukleidou eisagoge harmonike, tou autou katatome kanonos]. Euclidis rudimenta musices. Eiusdem sectio regulae harmonicae, e regia bibliotheca desumpta [...].‎

‎Paris, Andreas Wechel, 1557. 4to. 2 parts. (4 pp.), 5-16, 10 ff. Text in Greek and Latin. With woodcut printer's device as well as several floral headpieces and initials. Later full vellum with handwritten spine-title.‎

‎First edition. Greek text and Latin translation of the "Introduction to Harmonics" by the Greek scholar Cleonides, the pupil of Aristoxenus, erroneously ascribed to Euclid, and of the "Division of the Scale", about whose true authorship there is no agreement. Edited by the French mathematician and educator Péna (ca. 1528-68), the book reflects the influence of classical mathematicians on Renaissance music theory and was a key work for the wide distribution of music theory of the classical period. - The attribution of the "Eisagoge" to Euclid (or to Pappus in some manuscripts) is incompatible with the Aristoxenian approach adopted in the treatise, namely that "the scale is formed of notes separated by a tone identified by the ear" (DSB IV, 430). Cleonides's treatise is the clearest account of the technical aspects in the work of the philosopher Aristoxenus, who defined key terms of music theory, including the interval, whole tone and semitone, pitch space, and rhythm. - The other musical work here ascribed to Euclid, the "Sectio canonis", expounds a quite contrary theory, namely "the Pythagorean doctrine that the musical intervals are to be distinguished by the mathematical ration of the notes terminating the interval [...] All that it seems possible to say with certainty is that Euclid wrote a book entitled 'Elements of Music' and that the 'Sectio canonis' has some connection with it" (DSB). Wechel printed both works in Greek as the first part and followed them with both Latin translations in the second. - Modern binding a little soiled and occasionally scratched; upper cover slightly bowed. Contemporary handwritten table of contents to second flyleaf (preserved from the first binding), mentioning another work by Péna, his translation of Euclid's "Optica & Catoptrica", also published in 1557, which appears to have been bound with the "Eisagoge" at the time. Second half shows a few light waterstains to the margin. Traces of an erased handwritten ownership on title-page. Rare; not seen at auction for nearly two decades. - RISM BVI 296. Gregory/Sonneck 85. ‎Horatius Flaccus, Quintus‎

‎Opera.‎

‎Paris, Didot, 1799. Imperial folio (354 x 492 mm). 404 pp. With 12 engraved vignettes in the Neoclassical style by by Girardet, Beisson and Coiny after Charles Percier's drawings, illustrating Roman reliefs. Contemporary Neoclassical red morocco binding by Georg Friedrich Krauss in Vienna for Duke Albert von Sachsen-Teschen. Profusely gilt spine divided into 7 compartments featuring green morocco lettering pieces and the monogram AS surrounded by an aureole. Leading edges gilt; gilt inner dentelles, marbled endpapers. All edges gilt.‎

‎Didot's "Louvre" edition of Horace, limited to 250 copies, of which this is no. 46 (and one of 100 copies containing the engravings "avant la lettre), signed by the publisher Pierre Didot the Elder ("No. 46 quarante-sixieme sur deux cents cinquante. P. Didot, l'aine"). The elegant unsigned binding is to be attributed to the Viennese artist bookbinder G. F. Krauss (active 1791-1824), showing the distinguishing features of his production. Krauss was the most prominent German bookbinder of his day, and the Duke of Saxe-Teschen was perhaps his most important client. Martin Breslauer's catalogue 110 offered a Krauss binding for Duke Albert, signed with his stamp "G. F. Krauss, Relieur à Vienne" and obviously performed in the same style and with the duke's monogram. Another fine example, unsigned like the present one, is pictured in the catalogue of Otto Schäfer's binding collection. - Duke Albert, Maria Theresa's son-in-law and sometime governor of Hungary and then of Belgium, was a collector of the first order. His collection of graphic art forms the nucleus of Vienna's Albertina; "as a bibliophile he evinced a special taste for good typography [...] Oddly, scholarship was long at a loss to identify Albert's bookbinders. Only recently [with the discovery of Breslauer's signed binding] could it be proved that Krauss bound at least parts of Duke Albert's library" (Schäfer). Works from the Krauss bindery have passed through some of the most distinguished collections over the years. There is but a small number of books printed by Didot and Bodoni which had the chance to be bound by Krauss. - Pierre Didot (1760-1853) was a third generation member of the prominent Parisian publishing family, Didot, renowned for the immaculate quality of their books. "When Pierre Didot l'ainé chose to adopt his own fount of letter - how exquisitely does it appear in the folio Virgil of 1798, and yet more, perhaps, in the folio Horace of 1799!? These are books which never have been, and never can be, eclipsed. Yet I own that the Horace, from the enchanting vignettes of Percier, engraved by Girardais, is to my taste the preferable volume" (Dibdin). Pierre and his younger brother Firmin took over the family business in 1789. Among their first projects was a supremely luxurious suite of the works of canonical authors from antiquity and France known as the 'Louvre' editions because they were launched when the firm occupied a studio space in the Musee du Louvre. The importance of these luxury editions - printed on the highest quality paper, illustrated by the leading artists of the period in Neoclassical style, and printed in a new type face designed exclusively for these editions - cannot be overstated: "The distinction of this set of folios resides in its scale, abounding illustrations, and its consequentially exorbitant production costs. Though it was not a commercial success, these books endure as Pierre's crowning achievement among the hundreds of editions he produced in his career, and easily the most significant illustrated set of books in the period" (Metropolitan Museum of Art). Didot himself, in a letter to Talleyrand, said of his Horace, "la superiorite d'execution de cet ouvrage ... l'emporte evidemment sur celle [du] Virgile [...] La gravure des vignettes est un chef-d'oeuvre". - Some light foxing throughout; dampstains around Didot's signature as a mark of authentication. The sumptuous binding is impeccably preserved. From the collection of the New York banker Lucius Wilmerding (1880-1949), trustee of the NY Public Library, vice-president of the American Library in Paris, and president of the Grolier Club, with his bookplate to the front pastedown. - Moss II, 33. ‎Gaudin, Paul, French engineer and archaeologist (1858-1921)‎

‎Collection of 42 photographs of archaeological objects and excavation sites in the necropolis of Yortan.‎

‎Yortan, 1898-1901. 13 x 18 cm and smaller. Glass plate negatives.‎

‎Historically important photographical documentation of the first excavations in the bronze-age necropolis of Yortan (3rd millennium AD) led by Paul Gaudin. The prehistoric site is located in western Anatolia, about 100 km east of Pergamon, and is famous for its characteristic ceramics that are defining for the Yortan culture. These ceramics show close similarities to those unearthed by Heinrich Schliemann in prehistoric Troy and in several other sites of the wider region. - Paul Gaudin was leading the construction of a railway line from Soma to Pandera, closely passing by Yortan, when he obtained the license (firman) for excavations in the necropolis through Osman Hamdi Bey, the father of Turkish archaeology. The first excavations were conducted in October of 1898, and a second campaign followed in 1901. The French archaeologist Maxime Collignon wrote a brief excavation report in 1901, and many of the ceramics found are now preserved in the Royal Museums of Art and History, Brussels. - Paul Gaudin was born in Paris, the son of the chemist Marc-Antoine Gaudin (1804-80). His passion for photography was certainly inherited from his pioneering father, who in 1841 introduced the usage of bromine fumes to improve the sensitivity of the plates, allowing for a great reduction of the necessary exposure time, and published the first French journal devoted to photographic research, "La Lumière". In 1880, Paul Gaudin completed his engineering training, obtained a position as deputy stationmaster in Paris, and was subsequently employed as an inspector by the Chemins de fer de l'Ouest. His career took an unexpected turn when he was sent to Turkey in 1892 to direct the Moudania-Brousse railroad line operated by the important Belgian investor and engineer Georges Nagelmackers. As early as 1894, after Nagelmackers had obtained the concession for the Smyrna-Cassaba railway, Gaudin was promoted to director of this important line and led its expansions. Paul Gaudin's lasting contributions to archaeology with his excavations in Yortan and in the Hellenistic and Roman city of Aphrosidias (1904 and 1905), as well as his important collection of antiquities, date to his time in Smyrna (Izmir). His most prestigious and challenging position as a railroad engineer, however, was his charge by Sultan Abdul Hamid II to complete the famous Hejaz railway. Despite financial problems, difficult geographical and climatic conditions, and the often hostile (sometimes even violent) reaction of the local population, Gaudin led the rapid expansion of the line from Ma'an to Medina, where the construction came to a definite halt in 1908. During this project, Gaudin was the first to photographically document the Arabic old town of Al-'Ula in 1907. - Little is known of Paul Gaudin's employment after his contract with the Hejaz railway expired in 1909. He briefly collaborated on the disastrous Ottoman project for the construction of a railway line from Hodeidah to Sana'a in 1911 and seems then to have permanently returned to France, where he died in Versailles in 1921. Today, Paul Gaudin is best remembered as a major patron of the Louvre, to which he donated more than 2,000 artifacts from his collection. The Istanbul Museum, the British Museum, and other institutions also owe him important contributions to their Asia Minor, especially Smyrna, antique collections. - Provenance: 1. Collection of Paul Gaudin, family inheritance. 2. Rouillac auction, 20 June 2022, lot 307.

‎Collection of 264 photographs from the archaeological site of Aphrodisias.‎

‎[Aphrodisias, 1904-1905]. 258 glass plate negatives (9 x 12 to 18 x 24 cm) and 8 panorama nitrate film negatives (31 x 9.5 cm).‎

‎Extensive photographic documentation of the first official archaeological excavation of Aphrodisias in the historic Caria region, now part of Anatolia, Turkey. Named Aphrodisias in the Hellenistic period, the city gained importance since the 1st century AD as an early and reliable ally of the Roman Empire in the region. During the Roman period, Aphrodisias enjoyed important privileges and became a provincial capital. The well-preserved ruins of public and private buildings excavated since 1904 bear witness to the wealth and importance of Aphrodisias during Imperial times. The city was also a centre of marble production and sculpture, adding greatly to its archaeological significance, as documented in the photographs. In the early 7th century, an earthquake largely destroyed the now Byzantine city that had been renamed Stauropolis around the same time, in an effort to remove pagan connotations. Little remained of Aphrodisias's former importance and splendour thereafter. - Osman Hamdi Bey, the father of Turkish archaeology, had first visited the site of Aphrodisias in 1892 and obtained permission for excavations in 1898. Lacking the necessary funds for a large archaeological campaign, the Francophile Hamdi Bey proposed to Paul Gaudin, then director of the Smyrna-Cassaba railway, to organize excavations in Aphrodisias under his license. A passionate amateur archaeologist who had already led excavations in the bronze-age necropolis of Yortan, Gaudin financed the initial campaign in August 1904. The summer of 1905 saw a more professional campaign under the scientific direction of the French archaeologist Gustave Mendel (1873-1938), with moderate financial support from the French state and private institutions. In August 1905, Paul Gaudin was called to Damascus to serve as director of the Hejaz railway project and therefore was absent for most of the 1905 campaign. Due to a bitter conflict between Gaudin and Mendel the excavations did not continue after 1905, and it was only in 1962 that Kenan Erim began a new campaign under the aegis of New York University that is currently led by Professor R. R. R. Smith (Oxford). - In view of the long interruption of work, Gaudin's photographic documentation is particularly valuable, as many of the archaeological findings have been dispersed among museums in Turkey and Western Europe or even lost over time. As Gaudin's 1904 campaign was not conducted systematically, the earlier photographs provide particularly valuable information concerning the progress of the excavations. - Paul Gaudin was born in Paris, the son of the chemist Marc-Antoine Gaudin (1804-80). His passion for photography was certainly inherited from his pioneering father who in 1841 introduced the usage of bromine fumes to improve the sensitivity of the plates, which allowed for a great reduction of the necessary exposure time, and published the first French journal devoted to photographic research, "La Lumière".
