SEMRA GERMANER, ZEYNEP INANKUR.
Constantinople and the orientalists.
Very Good English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (29 x 24 cm). In English. 331 p., b/w and color ills. Constantinople and the orientalists. Since the publication of our earlier study; 'Orientalism and Turkey', we have been exploring the ramifications of Orientalism in the Ottoman capital of Istanbul itself, or as it was generally known in the nineteenth and early twentieth century: Constantinople. The present study, documented by both visual and written records, including memories, reveals not only the ways in which Istanbul was perceived and portrayed by European artists in the nineteenth century, but it also tries to represent the contemporary city as it truly lived and breathed. In the present work, the reader will discover the identity of Western artists whose works pictorially limned the Ottoman capital, their favorite subjects ¿the harem, the bath, the coffeehouse, and the slave market- and the nature of their interpretation of these subjects.

From Mekteb-i Sultani to Galatasaray Lycee painters, 1868-1968 = De Mekteb-i Sultani au Lycee de Galatasaray peintres, 1868-1968.= Mekteb-i Sultani'den Galatasaray Lisesi'ne ressamlar, 1868-1968. This catalogue was published to accompany the "From Mekteb-i Sultani to Galatasaray Lycée Painters 1868-1968" exhibition held on 10 February 2009 at the Suna and Inan Kiraç Foundation Pera Museum on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Galatasaray Alumni Association. Opened on 1 September 1868 with the support of Sultan Abdülaziz, Mekteb-i Sultani was conceived of as a training ground for bureaucracts who would staff the state's newly-designed agencies, it was thought that its students should be inculcated in the ways of international diplomacy and European culture. Among the lessons that were included in the curriculum with this idea in mind were European art and literature and it was due to their influence that major artists emerged both from Imperial-period Mekteb-i Sultani and from Republican-period Galatasaray Lycée. The primary aim of this exhibition is to draw attention to an attitude towards education which, for over a century in the years from 1868 to 1968, upheld stricht standards of quality, fostered an undying love of art from generation to generation and transformed that love into professionalism. When the works of Galatasaray graduates were chosen for the exhibition, attention was given as much as possible to examples of their impressions of Istanbul and Paris in order to emphasize their sojourns in the two cities. The authors of the works on display in this exhibition today figure among the leading names in the history of Turkish art. Viewing this group of works produced by those artists reveals the importance of the role that the institution played in Turkey's artistic environment and the value of the contributions that it made during the course of a century from Mekteb-i Sultani to Galatasaray Lycée.

New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (29 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. [vi], 174 p., color and b/w ills. This is not alove song: Video art and pop music crossovers.= Bu bir ask sarkisi degil: Video sanati ve pop müzik iliskisi. [Exhibition catalogue]. "This is Not a Love Song: Video Art and Pop Music Crossovers" exhibition catalogue traces the genealogy of the relations between video art and pop music from the 1960s to today in which video art and pop music crossed roads. The catalogue features a substantial essay on video art and pop music relationship by curator F. Javier Panera Cuevas. The five chapters in the catalogue Art in Pop, Pop in Art, Hysteria and Religion, 'Non-Musicians' vs 'Non-Artists' Rock and Conceptual Art, Rock and Its Double: Pop Music as a 'Toolbox' and Dance Music Politics present a deeper look into the works in the exhibition. This is Not a Love Song suggests that the relations between music and the visual arts force us to reconsider another history of art, in which musicians and artists can position themselves either as actors in the hegemonic cultural system or as critical radicals whose traces, as Greil Marcus would say, can be as intense and as short-lived 'as a lipstick stain that is removed but leaves a profound imprint on our memory. Memory and continuity. A selection from the Huma Kabakçi Collection.= Ani ve süreklilik. Huma Kabakçi Koleksiyonu'ndan bir seçki. [Exhibition catalogue].
New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (29 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 172 p., color ills. Memory and continuity. A selection from the Huma Kabakçi Collection.= Ani ve süreklilik. Huma Kabakçi Koleksiyonu'ndan bir seçki. [Exhibition catalogue]. A firm believer in the idea that a collection needs to be upheld at least by four generations and comparing this continuity to a relay race, Nahit Kabakc¿ began creating the Huma Kabakc¿ Collectionfrom the 1980s onwards. Today, the collection can be considered one of the most important and outstanding examples among the rare, consciously created, and long-lasting ones of its kind in Turkey. Apart from the logic of creating the Huma Kabakc¿ Collection, its evolution/growth over time, and its subjectivity, the exhibition was designed by keeping in mind its structure, reviewed and changed from time to time, with both objectivity and an art historical subjectivity. The catalogue, in that sense, brings to fore the common and diverging points of the two generations by which the collection has been sustained, through essays and works explanations.

FRANÇOIS AUGUSTE RODIN, (1840-1917).
Heykelin büyük ustasi Rodin Istanbul'da. [Exhibition catalogue].
New Turkish Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (27 x 24 cm). In Turkish. 400 p., color and b/w ills. The Sabanci University Sakip Sabanci Museum (SSM) hosts works by the French sculptor Auguste Rodin. The exhibition titled "The Master Sculptor Rodin in Istanbul" comprises 203 artworks selected from the collection of the Rodin Museum in Paris. The exhibition features the artist's bronze, plaster and marble sculptures, archival photographs, many drawings as well as some pieces from his collection of antique-style statues. Among nearly 100 sculptures that will be exhibited by SSM, which aims to promote wider public appreciation of the art of sculpture through the works of a renown master sculptor, are Rodin's masterpieces like The Thinker, The Kiss, The Burghers of Calais, The Monument to Balzac and The Walking Man. In addition to 18 statues and many other diassembled-assembled pieces drawn from The Gates of Hell, on which Rodin worked for long years but could not succeed to complete, 20 antique-style statues from Rodin's special collection are displayed at the exhibition. The bronze horse statue, after which the Horse Mansion was named and which has been saluting the Bosphorus since 1952, has been replaced with the Monument to Victor Hugo for the first time on the occasion of the exhibition. The statue of the renown poet, writer and thinker Victor Hugo made by Rodin is 1.85 m in height and 2.85 m in width. The photographs and sketches exhibited along with the other works enable visitors to track the artist's journey from his early works to his most famous masterpieces, and also shed light on the artist as a sketcher and a collector. The bilingual exhibition catalogue, which was prepared in Turkish and English, and whose texts were compiled by Samih Rifat, briefs on Rodin's life and artistic journey. The exhibition also proposes a set of events such as conferences, sculpture workshops and training programs for the kids. The exhibition, which is sponsored by Akbank and held in cooperation with the Rodin Museum in Paris and the French Cultural Center, will be open until September 3, 2006. The Artist - Born in Paris on November 12, 1840, François-Auguste-René Rodin discovered sculpture after he attended La Petite École, a special school for drawing and mathematics, and began to improve his drawing skill. He rented his first workshop in 1864 and met Rose Beuret, aged 20. In 1871, he exhibited his works in Belgium for the first time. In 1875, he started to work on a life-size human body, which he called The Bronze Age. In 1882, he sculptured the figures of Adam, Eve and the Thinker. After a while, he met Camille Claudel who soon became his mistress and biggest rival. In 1883, he created his Monument to Victor Hugo, and was commissioned by the City Council of Calais to sculpture the Monument to the Burghers of Calais two years later. The following year, he completed The Kiss. In 1888, the state commissioned The Kiss in marble for the Universal Exhibition. In 1889, he exhibited together with Claude Monet, the famous French painter and one of the founders of impressionism. In 1895, he bought the Villa des Brillants in Meudon and started to build up his collection of paintings and antique statues. The Rodin Pavilion was inaugurated at the Alma Square in Paris on the occasion of the Universal Exhibition of 1900, and a major exhibition of Rodin took place in Prague in 1902. In 1904, the first exhibition of a large-scale plaster of The Thinker took place at the International Society in London, then a bronze version of it at the Salon de Paris. The Thinker was placed in front of the Panthéon in 1906, which was later taken to Hôtel Biron (now the Rodin Museum) in 1908. The French National Assembly decided to establish the Rodin Museum in the Hôtel Brion in memory of the artist who handed over his collections to the state through three successive donations. On January 29, 1917, Rodin married Rose Beuret. Rose died on February 14, Valentine's Day. Die

This book has been published for the reason of Mine Art Gallery's turning 30 years old. In this book, the activities carried out through 30 years by Mine Art Gallery which is one of the important stops in the roadmap of Turkish Art History has been documented. This book consists of the exhibitions, conversations, catalogue texts and posters of exhibitions, bulletins, texts that took place in the press, photographs and videos which are formed through 30 years, which is only a little part of Mine Art Gallery's archive. Certainly, we had to make a selection between the numbers of sources. I think we showed the required sensitivity to ensure the integrity of the book while selecting the quoted documents precisely and carefully. This book is different than the routine books of history of art galleries. Because, this book explains the history of Mine Art Gallery through the artists who supported them in their foundation. It is very certain that squeezing all 30 years of an art gallery in to a book is very difficult. As a matter of fact, we couldn't. We could just include the main documentation. For the upcoming periods, Mine Art Gallery is targeting to publish more books drawing upon their rich archive and also wants to share their archive with the art lovers. Mine Art Gallery with its roadmap that continues for these nonstop 30 years, not only formed their own documentation, but also has brought an important archive for the Turkish art history. Publication of this book will carry meaning as an important source for many researchers, art writers, art critics and for all the people who are interested in art, and also will be an encouraging force for the other art galleries. 500 copies were printed. A very heavy box set. Extra shipping fee will be requested.

METIN AND, (1927-2008).
Bazaar painters: Ottoman figurative arts 2. Edited by Tülün Degirmenci, M. Sabri Koz.
New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (29 x 23 cm). Edition in English. 248 p., color ills. Bazaar painters: Ottoman figurative arts 2. Edited by Tülün Degirmenci, M. Sabri Koz. Coining the phrase 'bazaar painters' in a 1985 article, Metin And enriched our art history terminology with a new concept as well as offer a glimpse into the world of these artists: how they worked, what they drew, where their works are today and how they contribute to our study of history of art and culture. He continued to promote and popularise their work through books and articles published until 2007, at times repeating earlier content as required. Bazaar painters and their work were not initially identified as a distinctive genre; Franz Taeschner, the first researcher to publish a selection, felt no need to refer to them as anything other than 'miniatures'. Challenging this trend, Metin And set about the immensely difficult task of obtaining pictures of bazaar painting albums from four corners of the globe in order to illustrate a prolific series of essays and books. The second volume of Ottoman Figurative Arts, Bazaar Painters consists of twelve articles published between 1985 and 2007, a comprehensive introduction by Tülün Degirmenci, and a concise album. The pictures and inscriptions Metin And chased enthusiastically all his life are but the echoing footsteps of a book, one that was either never written, or somehow got lost before it could be published.

Pierre Loti et les silhouettes de Hassan: Portraits avant La II. Constitution.= Pierre Loti ve Hasan silüetleri: II. Mesrutiyet öncesi portreler.
Fine French Original bdg. HC. 4to. In French and Turkish. 168 p., ills. Pierre Loti et les silhouettes de Hassan: Portraits avant La II. Constitution.= Pierre Loti ve Hasan silüetleri: II. Mesrutiyet öncesi portreler. The novelist Julien Viaud, famous for his nickname Pierre Loti, is a traveling maritime officer. At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, he makes seven trips to Istanbul. In 1903, at the age of 53, Pierre Loti takes over Le Vautour, the first station ship to the French Embassy in Istanbul, during his fifth trip to Turkey. In the same period, Hasan signed cartoons start to circulate in Istanbul. The person who is hiding under Hasan is actually Robert de Guiroye, a naval officer. This person was then assigned to the auxiliary ship "La Mouette" (Seagull) under the command of Pierre Loti. It is thought that this officer made drawings on this ship in the evening after having spent a long time in important social clubs such as Cercle d'Orient, Pera Palas Ballroom, Tepebasi Theater. Who is actually Hasan / Who is the real Hasan? The answer to this problem is in the exhibition and detailed catalog. Let's see if they can help bring Hasan's identity to light. The "Pierre Loti and Hasan Silhouettes" exhibition is made up of documents obtained as a result of years of research by numerous collections and valuable collector Sayen Erol Makzume, who has vast knowledge of Hasan's lithographs in the early 20th century. The exhibition contains texts, cartoons and in-depth information, and sheds light on the transition period of Turkey after the Second Constitutional Monarchy.

CAO FEI, NILBAR GÜRES, RAQS MEDIA COLLECTIVE et alli.
The time needs changing.= Zaman degismeli. [Exhibition catalogue]. Edited by Begüm Akkoyunlu-Ersöz, Yasemin Ülgen, Ulya Soney.
New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (28 x 24 cm). Bilingual in Turkish and English. 103 p., color ills. The Time Needs Changing exhibition questions our geo-politically controlled notions of time. The three artists in this show give alternatives to linear time, which is currently strictly enforced by the power structures under which we live. The works of Cao Fei, Nilbar Güres and the Raqs Media Collective release the shackles of time, and suggest alternative and parallel paths. The exhibition presents a thought-scape that draws from three different parts of the world; China, Turkey and India. The artists explore time through drawing, video, photography, installation and new media. Time is one of the many subjects addressed by the participants of the exhibition. Their works help us better understand our relations with ourselves, as well as those with the world around us. Nilbar Güres questions masculine linear time; Cao Fei offers us greater control in a world where real and virtual intersect; and the Raqs Media Collective liberates time itself in its works that associate memory with different experiences.

New English Paperback. 4to. (30 x 21 cm). In English and Turkish. 147 p., color ills. Pulse of the universe: Retrospective.= Evrenin nabzi: Retrospektif. [Exhibition catalogue]. "This book has been prepared in coordination with 'Maria Kiiliçlioglu Retrospective' Exhibition held at Is Sanat Kibele Gallery between January 9th - February 23rd, 2019.". Kiliçlioglu, who is the daughter of famous Bulgarian sculptor Dimitar Dimov, began creating art at her father's sculpture workshop when she was just 4 years old. Her toys were dough for statues, waxes and bronze. She discovered the miracle of creating 3D objects from a young age. She focused on the West because of her education but then turned her face to Mesopotamia, diverging new searches in her art life. Her first few works, such as "Mother," "Devil," "Angel" and "Kiss," are the representations of the artist's search for a form. She created many works in the Hellenistic style with the statues that were produced with stone, wax and bronze. The works that she created using surrealist and fantastic elements added a different and authentic aspect to her art, in combination with her imaginative power. TURKISH ART Sculpture.
