It renews officially by naming specific individuals under the reign of Louis XV the interdictions made by Louis XIV for Protestants to exercise the trade of booksellers and printers. Frère Manuel de Bibliographie Normande I p. 171 col. 1 devotes a whole page to this affair of forbidding booksellers to work and the suspension of the brothers Calloüe and the family Le Tourneur - a suspension which nevertheless did not impede the Calloüe family being one of the most famous families of printers in Rouen where they worked from 1612 to at least 1753; printing and editing not only many Protestant works but also books in Spanish or translated from the Spanish. There is also a widow Calloüe who died at the Bastille and Jean Calloüe himself fled to England where another member of his family Denis translated into French works that were favorable to King Charles II. unknown

Rare first edition of one of the most successful libels published in the 2nd half of the 18th-century. One of the remarkable features of these "libels" was the fact that they had a political meaning, which made them different from the chroniques scandaleuses with which they can be compared as far as the preference for scandals goes. And it was precisely this combination of suggested objective history and the "revelation" of the private sins of persons of importance (ministers, members of the royal family, indeed the King himself, etc.) through with these "libels" desecrated the ruling powers and authorities. "Although the book presented itself as an objective history of Louis's reign, it treated the reader to a scabrous inside account of his sex life" (R. Darnton, The Literary Underground of the Old Regime, p. 145 ff.) Darnton's analysis of this and other works sold in the days of the Ancien Régime, the trade, distribution, numbers of copies sold, and the disastrous effects these books had on the way people viewed authority, the King, the court and the magistracy, is not just fascinating reading but also shows how now forgotten authors and books provided "news" and effectively undermined the authority of the regime.The pages ix-civ contain "Coup d'oeil sur l'histoire de Louis XV, pour servir d'instruction, de commentaire & de supplément à cet ouvrage." - Internally a fine copy.

These works form part of a tradition in which the virtues of the ancient Greek philosophers are compared to the (supposed) virtues of the Jesuit doctrines and refute the Papal bul. The first work was condamned on August 20, 1726.Pierre Boyer (1677-1755) was an ardent opponent of the Jesuits and the Papal bul against the Jansenists and published a number of violent, polemical works on the subject. He was imprisoned at Mont St.-Michel and later at Vincennes where he died in 1755.

In-16 (mm. 173x108), p. pelle bazana coeva, decorazioni e tit. oro su tassello al dorso, tagli rossi, pp. (2),268, molto ben illustrato, come da Indice, da 18 (su 19) tavole f.t., inc. in rame e quasi tutte più volte ripieg. Vi figurano: pianta della città, bellissima veduta di Genova a volo d’uccello, vedute dei sontuosi palazzi e chiese, costumi. "Manca" il “plan topographique avec les murailles neuves”. La guida contiene “tout ce qu’il y a de curieux et d’intéressant, tant en architecture, peinture, sculpture, et objets d’art qu’en établissemens publics et de bienfaisance, avec un précis historique sur l’antiquité de cette Ville”. Cfr. Fossati Bellani,II,2646 che la cita con 15 tavv. - Lozzi,2113 un’ediz. senza data: “tavole oblunghe di bellissimo effetto” - Schlosser,576: “secondo il catalogo del Museo Britannnico il nome dell’A. è Giacomo Brusco”.
