<p>Panama circa early 1900s. 1900s. Good. - Fourteen original silver print photographs of the Canal Zone each measuring 3-1/4 inches high by 5-1/2 inches wide. The images include scenes of workers on and debarking from ships people strolling along village or town streets with horse drawn carriages what is likely an official residence and 5 images of construction work on what would later become the Panama Canal. One of the photos depicting construction work is a duplicate. The photographs are slightly curled with creases to the corners of a very few photos and minor chips to the edges of 4 of these. Very good.</p> [Panama], circa early [1900s].

Esemplare genuino e ben conservato. Edizione originale (e sconosciuta a tutte le bibliografie consultate) del primo volume (qualche anni più tardi ne seguì un secondo) che testimonia la veemenza dei contrasti tra cappuccini e gesuiti in merito ai riti malabarici in India.

First Latin edition of the famous Lettres Provinciales, translated by Pierre Nicole (and with additions (p. 510-608) by Pierre Nicole (as "Willem Wendrockius" and as "Paulus Irenaeus")), published under the pseudonym Wilhelm Wendrock, a few months after the original French edition and just as that edition forbidden (by the Conseil d'État on September 23, 1660) and burnt. The book was printed by Jean Elzevier "pour le compte de ses parents d'Amsterdam" who had very good relations with the jansenists and were about to publish the first collective edition of the Provinciales (see Willems). Born in 1623, Pascal came under Jansenist influence in 1646. 'In 1654, after a period of discouragement and repeated meditations, he underwent a mystical experience which effected his definite conversion to a religious life ..... He now, in 1655, took up his residence in Port Royal ..... Attacks by the Jesuits on the Jansenist cause and on Antoine Arnauld led to the publication in 1656-7 of eighteen Lettres de Louis de Montalte à un Provincial de ses amis et aux RR. PP. Jesuites sur la morale et la politique de ces peres; they were composed by Pascal and are known as his Lettres provinciales. They deal with two subjects: divine grace, and the ethical code of the Jesuits ... Against the relaxed morality which the Jesuits were said to teach, he makes a vigorous appeal to public opinion by means of quotations from Jesuit works and by dialogues in which Jesuits are made, by their admissions, to cast discredit on themselves. The Lettres provinciales, written with polite irony and the utmost simplicity, lucidity, and objectivity, were an enormous success and dealt the Jesuits a blow from which they never recovered. The work was placed on the Index and was ordered by the Royal Council to be burnt (1660)' (Oxford Companion to French Literature, p. 541).After his mystical experience Pascal brought into this new existence "the gift of concrete precision which was the mark of his genius. The Lettres Provinciales are masterpieces of both the esprit de géométrie and the esprit de finesse. The first carried to the extreme the demands of a morality that was sincerely Christian and did not permit of serving two masters at the same time; the second unmasked one by one the abstract formulae, seemingly framed for juridical and secular purposes, behind which lay hidden the complaisance of the casuists. He forced the faithful Christian to scrutinize his own conscience, laying bare the depths of desire and the libido which testifies to the persistence of the original sin. (.....) Vermiglioli in Bibliografia storico-Perugina fa riferimento alla seconda edizione di questo saggio scrivendo: 'È questa una ristampa poiche' vivente 1'Autore si pubblico' nel volume X degli Opuscoli nuovi calogeriani. Il Passeri con questo picciolo lavoro entro' in campo sulle controversie per il Panteon di Rimino fra Giovanni Bianchi e Domenico Vandelli, e per 1'affezione che porta' sempre a Perugia oltre avervi preso quel titolo vi parlo' soventemente dei Monumenti perugini' (p. 118).

Raro e non presente in Iccu.

All edges decorated red. 4to. Rebound in three quarters leather over marbled boards. Spine paper label. Hardbound. Thomas Pennant (1726-1798) was probably the foremost 18th century Welsh intellectual. A naturalist, zoologist, and antiquary, he is best known for this 'A Tour in Wales'. In his famous autobiography The Literary Life (1793) he states that he sometimes marvelled at his own industry. His first book was the 1766 folio, British Zoology. This made a financial loss as it had been printed on paper that was too large. Thereafter all his major works appeared in smaller formats, either octavos or quartos. The current view of his contribution to natural history is that its importance lies in the fact that he popularized and promoted its study. His tours and topographic works also display his insistence on detailed research. Among the accounts of tours he published are those of two separate visits to Scotland, a tour from Chester to London, and an account of London itself. His A Tour in Wales (1778-1783) is regarded as being quite outstanding and easily the finest work in a considerable corpus of Welsh tour literature published from ca. 1770 onwards. Pennant also became a collector more as a scholar than as a connoisseur. As a patron he tended to purchase pictures which were directly commissioned from the artist. 1846 3 pp. letter to Judge Burnside PA Supreme Court on the destructive effects of a flood
Very Good. Irvin was a US Rep from Pennsylvania 1841-45 Whig Party and reports to Burnside then an Associate Justice with the PA Supreme Court an extensive consideration of the damage the flood afflicted on residents of central Pennsylvania Burnside was from Montgomery County. The flooding lasted from March 15 to March 18 1846 and the Susquehanna was 22 feet above its normal level. This letter was written on March 16. Mentions Curtin's Forge Spring Creek Benner Dam some canals etc. that 30 to 50 feet of embankment were seriously eroded people injured etc. unknown

In folio (mm. 470 x 347), tela coeva con ricca decorazione a secco e titolo oro, con stemma della Svizzera al piatto anteriore. Raccolta di 15 magnifiche tavole disegnate e litografate a colori da Charles Perron, protette da velina. Le cromolitografie sono particolarmente vive perchè esaltate dalla tempera. Privo della pag. di frontesp. (come in molti esempl. che hanno il titolo sulla copertina). Ogni tavola, con la didascalia in francese e in tedesco, porta: Charnaux Editeur, Place Bel air, Genève (in basso a sinistra) - Ch. Perron del. et lith. (in basso al centro) - Imp. Lemercier, 57 r. de Seine, Paris (in basso a destra). Le tavole 5, 6 e 15 sono firmate Ch. Perron; le altre sono firmate G. Perron. Prima ed unica edizione, molto rara, di quest’opera dedicata alle magnifiche uniformi svizzere. Le tavole delle uniformi, suggestive, vivaci e decorative, mostrano le diverse truppe con tocchi paesaggistici: includono un Generale, un medico e un veterinario e un membro dei Dragoni. Cfr. Colas, 2318 - Benezit,X, p. 772 definisce l’artista svizzero Charles Eugène Perron (1837-1909) “peintre, lithographe et dessinateur de cartes. Il était le fils de Georges Perron”. Bell’esemplare, molto ben conservato.
