Burn, Richard John Burn
A New Law Dictionary Intended for General Use as Well as For.
2004. ISBN-13: 9781584773566; ISBN-10: 1584773561. "Englishing" the Law: The Landmark 1792 Burn's Practical Law Dictionary for the Common Gentleman With New Introduction by Bryan A. Garner Burn Richard. A New Law Dictionary Intended for General Use as Well as For Gentlemen of the Profession and Continued to the Present Time by John Burn. Originally published: London: Printed by A. Strahan and W. Woodfall 1792. 2 vols. i new introduction vii 442; 446 pp. Reprinted 2004 by The Lawbook Exchange Ltd. With a new introduction by Bryan A. Garner President LawProse Inc. ISBN-13: 9781584773566; ISBN-10: 1584773561. Hardcover. New. $150. Burn's dictionary was published posthumously by the author's son John Burn c.1744-1802. Intended to be a practical tool it eliminated terms of historical interest including several in Law French. The elimination of these entries cleared space for topics current with the late 1700s and longer entries. Indeed Burn's articles on such subjects as judgment jury purchase and will are broader more detailed and better organized than they are in earlier dictionaries. It is a valuable reference for those who want to see how legal terms were understood in the later decades of the eighteenth century. Richard Burn 1709-1785 was one of the most prolific and influential English legal writers of the eighteenth century. His most important books are Justice of the Peace and Parish Officer and Ecclesiastical Law which went through several editions. He was the editor of the 9th 10th and 11th editions of Blackstone's Commentaries on the Laws of England. Bryan A. Garner is the author of over 30 books including Garner's Modern English Usage 5th ed. 2022 and Reading Law: The Interpretation of Legal Texts 2012-coauthored with the late Justice Antonin Scalia. He has authored seven unabridged editions of Black's Law Dictionary from the 7th edition 1999 to the 12th edition 2024. Garner is a Distinguished Research Professor of Law at Southern Methodist University and also lectures at the University of Texas School of Law Texas A&M School of Law and Texas Tech School of Law. unknown

Burns, Robert I.
JEWS IN THE NOTARIAL CULTURE Latinate Wills in Mediterranean Spain, 1250-1350
244 pages; In the rapidly transforming world of thirteenth-century Mediterranean Spain, the all-purpose scribe and contract lawyer known as the notary became a familiar figure. Most legal transactions of the Roman Law Renaissance were framed in this functionary's notoriously hasty shorthand. Notarial archives, then, offer a remarkable window on the daily life of this pluri-ethnic society. Robert I. Burns brings together the testimony of a multitude of documents, and transcribes in full nearly fifty will- related charters prepared by notaries, to give a never-before-seen view of Jewish society in that place and time. Wills can display the religious conscience, ethical institutions, social mobility, and property dynamics of whole groups or regions. Even a single testament allows a glimpse into the testator's family and into the life and times of the living person. Burns devotes special attention to women in wills and to women's wills, extracting rich information on medieval women and gender relationships. While learning much about the role of kings and courts and the dynamics of Christian-Jewish relations, the reader also gains rare insights into a unique Jewish community. From the Inside Flap: "Fascinating and illuminating, informed by outstanding scholarly analysis. . . . With his deft touch, Burns opens a most unusual window on the realities of medieval Iberian Jewish life."--Robert Chazan, author of European Jewry and the First Crusade. Fine condition in fine dustjacket. (SEF-22A-1)

BURSA SIPAHI OCAGI].
[HORSEBREEDING / RIDING / THE REGULATIONS OF JOCKEY CLUB OF BURSA] Bursa Sipahi Ocagi nizamnâmesi 1341.
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Paperback. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In Ottoman script. 4 p. Folding trace on cover. Today's organized horse races as today were conducted in Izmir on 23 September 1856 for the first time. In the leadership of Evliyazade Refik Bey and the term's Consul General of England Mr. Patterson, Smyrna Races Club was founded. Izmir races were organized annually on Easter days. S.R.C. races were in their golden ages at the beginning of the 20th century and this ended with the start of 1st World War. Ottoman Jockey Club: The opinions of organizing horse races and breeding by means of jockey club in Turkey was tried to be accomplished but there is no clear knowledge on the actions of this club. According to the directory published in 1909, Grand Vizier Sait Halim Pasha was the president of the Ottoman Jockey Club. Refik Evliyazade started working for regular races to be organized in Istanbul when S.R.C races came to an end with the First World War. As a result of the support by the most powerful person of the era, Enver Pasha, Guild of Cavalryman Horse Riding Club, and Society of Improving Horse Breed were founded in 1913. Choosing Veliefendi as a racetrack coincides with the same era. Bursa Sipahi Ocagi was one of the earliest jockey and horse breeding and racing clubs in Ottoman / Turkish history. This rare booklet includes the regulations of the Bursa Sipahi Ocagi prepared in the Republican period. AH 1341 = AD 1925. Not in Özege.; Not in OCLC. Extremely rare.

Burtsev, N. L.
Narodovolets. Sotsial'no-politicheskoe obozrenie. No. 1. London, V. Bourtzeff, April 1897.
8vo. 39, (1) pp. With 2 photographs in the text. Original printed self-wrappers with tan paper spine strip. First of only four published issues of this journal of the Russian socialist revolutionary movement "Narodnaia Volia" (People's Will), perhaps best known for its affirmation of political terrorism and the successful assassination of Tsar Alexander II in 1881. The journal was published by Vladimir Burtsev (1862-1942), a Russian revolutionary activist and publisher. Quite scandalously, the first issue openly reprimands the organization for failing to resist the Russian government and calls for assassinating Nicholas II. In 1898, Burtsev was arrested by British authorities based on this publication and sentenced to 18 months of hard labour. Numbers 1-3 were published in London in 1897; no. 4 followed in Geneva in 1903, for which Burtsev was deported and forever banned from the country. This issue also reproduces the photographs of two terrorists who unsuccessfully conspired to assassinate Alexander III in 1889 and had since died (Isaak Dembo and Sofia Ginsburg). Burtsev would later oppose the Bolsheviks after returning to Russia, and eventually he was arrested. Gorky secured his release and Burtsev once again fled Russia. He became an outspoken activist against both Soviet antisemitism as well as the fascist movements of the 1930s. - Traces of stamp and slight loss to upper right corner of front wrapper. Spine strip somewhat fragile; internally very good. From the famous collection of Socialistica of Marxist bibliophile and scholar Chimen Abramsky (1916-2010), who fled to London from the Soviet Union in the early 1930s and became a leading specialist in both Judaica and socialist thought. His enormous collection, parts of which were auctioned after his death, has recently been commemorated in his son's biography, The House of Twenty Thousand Books (2014).
