‎Law Judge John‎

‎The Colonial History of Vincennes under the French British and American Governments‎

‎Vincennes: Harvey Mason & Co. 1858. First Edition. First printing Very good in the publisher's original blind stamped purple cloth covered boards with faded copper text on the spine which is faded to a light brown. The cloth at the head and heel of the spine is worn through and beginning to fray at the head. There is a faint dampness stain on the front paste down which did not impact on any other pages and there is a prior owner's name in pencil on the first free end paper. The text block is remarkably free of tanning and shows very little evidence of foxing. This is an address delivered by Judge Law before the Vincennes Historical and Antiquarian Society on February 22d 1839 with additional notes and illustrations. 156 pages of text followed by a single page of a "list of effective men belonging to Capt. Pierre Gamelin's Company at Post Vincennes July 4th 1790". The first printing of this title which is considered to be "quite scarce by Howes was issued in approximately 2000 copies at the time of the author's original address. This reprinting was augmented with additional material. Howes L-152; Sabin 39317 Harvey, Mason & Co. hardcover books‎

‎ENGLISH LAW. Shebbearre John Attributed Author‎

‎An Appeal to the People: Containing the Genuine and Entire Letter of Admiral Byng to the Secr. of the Ad------y: Observations on those Parts of it which were omitted by the Writers of the Gazette: And What Might be the Reasons for Such Omissions. Part the First‎

‎London: Printed for J. Morgan 1756 1756. First edition one of two issues; this one without the errata on page 76. ESTC T22278; Eddy Samuel Johnson Book Reviewer in the Literary Magazine 26; Hanley Samuel Johnson Book Reviewer pages 134-36. First and final leaves a little dust-soiled; very good copy. 8vo modern brown quarter buckram blue paper boards gilt lettering. With half-title. ¶ A defense of Admiral John Byng 1704-1757 of the Royal Navy who was on trial for treason based on dubious charges. He was found guilty and was tragically executed the following year. Shebbearre 1709-1788 a pamphleteer and contrarian wrote numerous tracts during the political crises of 1755-56 attacking the misadventures of the English government abroad. None according to Shebbearre were more blatantly wrongheaded than the trial of John Byng. Shebbearre's perceived lack of patriotism landed him in prison and he was roundly criticized and lampooned by the likes of Johnson Smollett and Griffith. Johnson eventually sided with Shebbearre in the Byng matter and approvingly reviewed An Appeal to the People in the Literary Magazine in October 1756. ESTC attributes An Appeal to John Byng himself and he did write pamphlets in his own defense but both Hanley and Eddy show convincing evidence that this was indeed by Shebbearre.

London: Printed for J. ‎Speeches Delivered at the City-Hall of the City of New-York in the Courts of Oyer and Terminer Common Pleas and General Sessions of the Peace. Second edition with Additions‎

‎New York: Printed and Published by Goerge Forman 1812. 140pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Contemporary red quarter roan and marbled boards. binding worn and slightly rubbed but sound text slightly browned else very good. Engraved bookplate. 140pp. 1 vols. 8vo. A New York Trial Lawyer 1812. Much expanded second edition from the first of the same year. Graham's florid summations at trials both civil and criminal involving seduction murder rape grand larceny arson assault counterfeiting etc. - and all in our fair City of New York!. There are some surprises: Graham successfully defends pro bono a Negro girl against charges that she murdered her mistress. On the other hand in his successful defense of a man accused of beating his wife here is the rhetoric of the day: "I myself have always been of the opinion that people of sensibility would endeavour to draw a veil over unfortunate family transactions so as to hide them from the fact of the world. This was the sentiment of the prisoner otherwise he would have exposed her baseness long since . I shall prove to you that the prosecutrix is the most fiery masculine and blood-thirsty of any woman this court or jury ever saw: in short she is a disgrace to her sex . A costume party attended by the locally famous identified only by first and last initials. An amusing poem "To the Queen" is appended which concerns a further description of those hosting and those attending the ball. Munsell wrote of this piece in his annotated copy: "This was written by Mip Gibbons to describe a fancy dress ball given at the expense of Henry Yates who occupied the Kane Mansion on South Pearl Street. It was conceived and arranged by E. R. Satterlee who had married a niece of Mr. Yates and had a genius for the fine arts . Mr. Satterlee was a wine and tea merchant in State Street succeeding his father who was successor of Mancius & Le Breton - famous in their day. Mr. S. moved to New York and engaged in insurance at 161 Broadway. This ball was the most famous affair that had ever been got up in Albany. In this work no words are divided at the ends of the lines. I set the type with my own hands at a time when I could do and enjoy such recreation - for type setting was always a recreation. The poem was written by W. L. Learned afterwards Judge Learned." Bibliotheca Munselliana 1846-37.

W. C. Little & Co. [J. Munsell, printer] unknown books‎

‎Corporation Court Docket & Fee Book. City of San Marcos spine title‎

‎San Marcos Tx 1908. Very good. 12374pp. Large folio. Original half calf and cloth spine gilt. Light wear and soiling to boards spine and corners a bit scuffed. Contemporary typescript sheet pasted to front flyleaf. Minor soiling and wear to contents. Extensive early 20th-century court docket recording book for the city of San Marcos Texas the seat of Hays County located about half way between Austin and San Antonio. The nearly four hundred entries one on each page cover the seven years from 1902 to 1908 and note the name of the defendant the offense and any convictions and punishments accorded. As one might expect many of the cases are for public drunkenness or disturbing the peace and there are also a number of defendants charged with "gaming" and the occasional assault or charge of fighting in the streets. On May 25 1904 Charlie Matts was tried for "Cruely and unmercifully beating and abusing a certain horse then in his possession" for which he was fined $5 plus court costs amounting to $12.25. In a case against Juan Garcia on April 20 1905 he was charged with "unlawfully keeping and permitting his place of business to be open for purpose of barter and sale and unlawfully selling certain goods etc. on Sunday April 9th 1905 after 9 o'clock A.M. on said day." Garcia was fined $20. Other interesting charges include "unlawfully carrying a pistol" "fast driving" "riding train" presumably without a ticket "using abusive language" and "placing filth in the public streets." The typescript sheet in the front of the volume outlines fees for the court including the cost of the clerk and the city attorney who makes double on a "not guilty" plea conviction. A useful record of legal activities in a small central Texas town that had a population of just over 2000 inhabitants at the turn of the 20th century. unknown books‎

‎Droit Jean artist 1884 1961‎

‎Charles & Cie. Fourrures Pelleteries. 6 Avenue de la Toison-D'Or Bruxelles‎

‎Brussels. Paper folder. Very Good Plus. N.d. circa 1910. 36 by 22 cm. Folio of eight pochoir illustrations all depicting elegantly appointed women decked in furs. The women are all on the move or active in some way -- these are illustrations meant to show how the garments work in their lifestyle. There is nothing static about the pictures. They bring to mind the breezy boulevard depictions of artists such as Sem with the difference that these portraits aren't caricatures. The fashions hark from a period in which beauty and elegance was the hallmark of high fashion while some of the shackles imposed by fashion were being loosened -- women could go out in the world on their own to a degree seldom the case a generation earlier. Jean Droit was a French and Belgian artist and writer who excelled at book illustration. He is better known for his depictions of wartime and warfare and he incidentally played an instrumental role in the scouting movement. This collection produced early in his prolific career is scarce -- we have been able to locate no other copies -- and each of the plates would be very appealing matted framed and hung on a wall.

unknown books‎

‎LAW/FERARA/PIGNA GB. ed. G. B.‎

‎Statuta Urbis Ferrariae nuper Reformata‎

‎
Folio 30.5 x 19.5 cm 10 ff. 307 i.e. 308 13 ff. including woodcut title showing Ferrara and Este arms and full-page woodcut portrait of the printer Rossi on EEEviii v. Bound in 18th-century stiff vellum title stenciled on spine. Some minor staining in scattered leaves and some trivial worming in margin but generally a broad-margined and fresh copy excellent. Rare and most likely the earliest acquirable edition of the municipals laws of Ferrara one of the richest and most cultivated of Northern Italian courts published shortly after the concluding session of the Council of Trent 1563. The work contains one of the earliest portrait of a printer in a book he himself produced see below. The work significantly revises the previous publication of local statutory law and is signed by a committee of local jurists 3v-4r. The statutes govern all aspects of civil and criminal law from the buying and selling of goods and property marriage testaments to criminal procedure. The work is of interest for containing a portrait of the printer. Note: Rossi had no editorial or authorial part in the work; he is expressly designated "Typographus" printer in the identifying legend. This is of interest to historians of the book for it showing the developing confidence and prestige enjoyed by 16th-century printers and is analogous though considerably more assertive to putting an element of the printer's process or trade in a publisher's device. "Rossi was near the end of a career as a printer at Ferrara that covered more than 50 years and certainly justified the use of his portrait in this volume" Mortimer I.261. Although it should be regarded as a form of self-indulgence and did not catch on-as say the author portraits on which it is based obviously did-it nonetheless remains an interesting bit of evidence for the elevated status of Italian printers. There is no repertory of examples and we know of no study of the subject but in querying colleagues we have located only two earlier analogous portraits: Rossi pictured himself in smaller format in the colophon to another book he published: Giovanni Maria Verrato's 1561 response to critics of the Council of Trent: Contra responsiones et protestationes. And Francesco Priscianese pictured himself in a Latin grammar published in 1540. Also Prof. Anthony Grafton draws our attention to the portraits of the illustrators in the Historia Stirpium of Leonhart Fuchs 1542. Further searching would doubtless turn up a few other examples but it is clearly an isolated phenomenon The statutes received an incunable edition in 1476 published by Severino da Ferrara BMC VI.609 the only copy we have been able to locate: this edition is not in Goff and we locate no American copy. The next edition was published by Rossi in 1534 with a less elaborate version of the title cut and without the portrait. The present edition is next making it third. According to Mortimer the hypothetical issue points raised by F. Berlan in his Bibliografia degli statuti municipali ed inediti di Ferrara Rome 1878 pp. 21-7 are in need of substantial copy-checking. There are no copies of the editio princeps or the 1534 edition in America; for the present edition OCLC lists Kansas Minnesota and the Waseda Library to which should be added the Harvard copy described by Mortimer. Mortimer Italian 182; Adams F266; Fumagalli Lexicon p. 128 fig 45 portrait; L.
