Dodd Christopher & Lary Bloom
Letters from Nuremberg My Father's Narrative of a Quest for Justice
New York: Crown. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 2007. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. 0307381161 . DJ and boards show very light shelf wear.; A bright solid book dustjacket in Mylar unclipped.; B&W Photographs; 9.3 X 6.2 X 1.3 inches; 373 pages; "For some sixty years the Nuremberg trials have demonstrated the resolve of the United States and its fellow Allied victors of the Second World War to uphold the principles of dispassionate justice and the rule of law even when cries of vengeance threatened to carry the day. In the summer of 1945 soon after the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany Thomas J. Dodd the father of U.S. Senator Christopher J. Dodd of Connecticut traveled to the devastated city of Nuremberg to serve as a staff lawyer in this unprecedented trial for crimes against humanity. Thanks to his agile legal mind and especially to his skills at interrogating the defendantsincluding such notorious figures as Hermann Gring Alfred Rosenberg Albert Speer Joachim von Ribbentrop and Rudolf Hesshe quickly rose to become the number two prosecutor in the U.S. contingent.Over the course of fifteen months Dodd described his efforts and his impressions of the proceedings in nightly letters to his wife Grace. The letters remained in the Dodd family archives unexamined for decades. When Christopher Dodd who followed his fathers path to the Senate sat down to read the letters he was overwhelmed by their intimacy by the love story they unveil by their power to paint vivid portraits of the accused war criminals and by their insights into the historical importance of the trials. Along with Christopher Dodds reflections on his fathers life and career and on the inspiration that good people across the world have long taken from the event that unfolded in the courtroom at Nuremberg where justice proved to be stronger than the most unspeakable evil these letters give us a fresh personal and often unique perspective on a true turning point in the history of our time. In todays world with new global threats once again put-ting our ideals to the test Letters from Nuremberg reminds us that fear and retribution are not the only bases for confrontation. As Christopher Dodd says here Now as in the era of Nuremberg this nation should never tailor its eternal principles to the conflict of the moment for if we do so we will be shadowing those we seek to overcome." . Front free endpaper removed ; Signed by author on half title page. Dust jacket in Mylar jacket protector. ; B&W Photographs; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 160 pages; "In 1962 the first St. Leonards Half-way home opened its doors in Windsor to welcome men who had spent time behind bars and needed a secure haven to make a clean start. A practical and determined Anglican priest by the name of Thomas Neil Libby saw the need for a re-entry residence that would help the ex-convict navigate the passage from incarceration to freedom making it easier for himself and safer for the community. Libby was struck by the profound tragedy of the ex-offender. Soon after leaving prison most would backslide into their former ways and associations. It was a time when as many as 80% of those completing prison terms found themselves once again standing in front of judges facing new charges." Libby worked with other organizations to promote the halfway house system. . Lone Pine Publishing hardcover

Showing the Flag The Mounted Police and Canadian Sovereignty in the North 1894-1925
Vancouver BC: The University of British Columbia Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1985. First Edition. Hardcover. 0774802456 . DJ and boards show very light shelf wear. ; A bright solid book. Dust jacket in Mylar jacket protector. ; B&W Photographs; 9.0 X 6.0 X 0.8 inches; 220 pages; "Under their various names the Mounted Police have played a vital colourful but often controversial role in Canadian history and nowhere has this been truer than on the northern frontier. The police were the agents through which the central government asserted sovereignty over the Yukon and the Northwest Territories just as it had done earlier on the Prairies. This book describes to what extent the RCMP shaped the northern frontier -- a frontier which steadily shifted separating territory under actual government control from that in which it was nominal. The chapters treat each new spurt in this expansion and the period of contact and transition which followed." . The University of British Columbia Press hardcover

Stephens Thomas B.
Order and Discipline in China The Shanghai Mixed Court 1911-1927
Seattle WA: University of Washington Press. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1992. First Edition. Hardcover. 0295971231 . Red cloth boards show light shelf wear.; A tight solid book text unmarked. ; Asian Law Series No. 9; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 159 pages; "Chinas traditional system of dispute resolution and maintenance of order in society has been treated by Western scholars as legal history but because the Chinese system is radically different from European systems in its conceptual structure and therefore does not fit into the familiar categories and models of Western law and jurisprudence such treatment has been inadequate and often misleading. In Order and Discipline in China Thomas B. Stephens provides a new approach methodology and theoretical framework for the interpretation of traditional Chinese law.Stephens argues convincingly that Chinese society has always operated according to the disciplinary system of order ni which hierarchy is established by actual power and he provides a thorough methodology and framework for understanding disciplinary theory. He discusses the system showing it not the random or even unjust tyranny it may sometimes appear to the Western legally oriented mind but an effective system that successfully guided China for centuries. The study is not merely historical but provides insights into Chinese ways of thinking about social relationships dispute resolution and the enforcement of civil obligations that are vital to intercultural understanding today. His study is based on the activities of the Mixed Court of the International Settlement at Shanghai which dealt with legal problems concerning Chinese people within the representative or assessor. The Mixed Court conventionally has been looked upon as a disciplinary tribunal enforcing a system of dispute resolution and the maintenance of social order upon the principles of disciplinary theory. The Mixed Court is a convenient point from which to measure the legal and disciplinary systems against each other and to study them in conflict. Although Western powers tried to interpret the court in legal terms it responds much more convincingly to analysis according to the disciplinary system: it provided its right to rule by the abililty to enforce its decisions and it decided cases not as claimed by Chinese laws which actually did not exist but according to those principles established by the Western consuls." . It is a plain full record of a crime that belongs to history. When a reporter from a newspaper here in Maryland asked to talk to me he said he had heard that I was writing another book.what about.I gave him the title and the names of Sacco and Vanzetti. There was a wavering pause.then:"Well I don't really know anything about them. for me it's just history." Scheideman Charles
Policing the Fringe The Curious Life of a Small-Town Mountie
Madeira Park BC: Harbour Publishing. Near Fine. 2009. First Edition; First Printing. Paperback. 1550174827 . Only slight wear.; A bright solid book ; Trade PB; 0.94 x 8.35 x 5.43 Inches; 320 pages; "From the 1960s through the 1980s RCMP Sergeant Charlie Scheideman spent much of his time patrolling the "dark corners of the Interior of British Columbia" where "the citizens would meet the modern criteria for redneck: if their veranda collapsed it would kill more than four dogs; they think 'harrass' is two words and so on." Such places weren't much fun to police but they were full of characters many of whom make their way into Charlie's entertaining book 'Policing the Fringe'. We meet Walter and Wilbur two Hixon hillbillies who went on a bender and decided it would be fun to stagger out onto the Cariboo Highway with a rifle and hold up passing cars which worked well enough until they held up a motorhome from Alaska that turned out to be better armed than they were. We meet Petre the hard-working hermit who was cheated out of his savings by three slick-talking mining promoters and waited to take his revenge--with an axe.

With wry humour and a policeman's eye for relevant detail Scheideman recounts events that range from the ridiculous to the horrific to the tragic. Once he stopped a car in the Fraser Canyon driven by three normally responsible American fishermen who on this occasion were careening wildly from one guard rail to another. Their defence They had failed to allow for the added kick of Canadian beer. His most searing memory was of waiting for the embers of a burned house to cool enough so he could retrieve the bodies of two small victims while in a nearby house party-goers kept right on partying. One of the most revealing accounts ever written about policing in small-town Canada this book bristles with unforgettable stories about the author's 27 years working on the RCMP's front lines. It will give readers new respect for the men and women who patrol Canada's backroads--both because of the extremely taxing work they do and the good spirit with which they do it." . In 1804 Burr killed Alexander Hamilton in a duel. While not facing charges for the duel the killing ended Burr's political career. After the duel Burr traveled westward for political and financial opportunities. The Burr conspiracy was part of a plan for Mexico to overthrow the Spanish in the Southwest. With the participation of Burr and his associates including General Wilkinson Burr stood to benefit financially. General Wilkinson alerted Jefferson of Burr's plans and in 1807 Jefferson ordered for Burr's arrest. Jefferson condemned Burr as a traitor.
