Roosevelt, Mrs James as told to Leighton, Isabel, and Forbush, Gabrielle
My Boy Franklin
New York: Roy Long & Richard R. Smith Inc 1933. Presumed First Edition First printing. Hardcover. Good. viii 115 5 pages. Some cover wear and soiling. Frontis illustration. Illustrations. Two inscriptions on fep. The first is "To St. George with best regards "F. D." believed to be for Franklin Delano/FDR. Then To Mrs. Schumate with best regards from St. George. This may be inscribed to Katharine Price Collier St. George a relative of FDR. Mrs. Schumate is possibly the wife of Robert Shumate. FDR by executive action exempted Mr. Schumate for mandatory retirement. Miss Leighton began her career in the theater appearing in several Broadway productions in the early 1920's. She went on to collaborate on six plays that were produced on Broadway including "Mercenary Mary" 1925 and "Spring Again" 1941. The latter which she wrote with Bertram Bloch starred Grace George C. Aubrey Smith and Joseph Buloff. In the 1930's and 40's she wrote for various magazines and for the North American Newspaper Alliance and served as a naval correspondent in World War II. She was the author or co-author of several books including "My Boy Franklin" about Franklin D. Roosevelt written with Gabrielle Forbush and "Where Away" written with George Sessions Perry the story of the World War II cruiser Marblehead. Gabrielle Forbush was a secretary with Louis Howe's staff during the presidential campaign of 1932. Thereafter she served Howe as secretary until his death in 1936 when she became Chief Division of Correspondence of the Treasury Department a position she held until 1945. She then held several other positions in the Treasury Department until her retirement in 1966. Sara Ann Delano Roosevelt September 21 1854 - September 7 1941 was the second wife of James Roosevelt I from 1880 the mother of President of the United States Franklin Delano Roosevelt her only child and subsequently the mother-in-law of Eleanor Roosevelt. <br/>She gave birth to Franklin in 1882 and was a devoted mother to him for the remainder of her life including home schooling and living close by in adulthood. She had a complex relationship with her daughter-in-law Eleanor which has led to media portrayals of her as a domineering and fearsome mother-in-law though these are at odds with other views. She died in 1941 with her son then the President at her side. She lived to see Franklin elected President of the United States three times becoming the first Presidential mother to vote for her son. Sara continued to support her son's career even standing in as First Lady on several occasions. She was always prepared to say something positive about her son and remained highly protective of him and his family. Roy Long & Richard R. Smith, Inc hardcover

Roosevelt, Eleanor
My Days.
New York: Dodge Publishing Company 1938. First edition of this firsthand look of everyday life in the White House by Eleanor Roosevelt. Octavo original cloth frontispiece of Roosevelt. Presentation copy inscribed by the author on the half-title page "To Miss Trefether With a Merry Xmas from Eleanor Roosevelt." Introduction by Malvina Thompson Scheider. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Rare and desirable signed and inscribed. First Lady for 12 years and an enduring presence among the world's most admired women Eleanor Roosevelt reached millions of Americans through her syndicated newspaper column. This collection a representative sampling of a decade of "My Day" pieces reveals a First Lady unconventional for her time in her role as the president's peripatetic and reliable observer of world affairs yet deeply traditional in observance of the rituals of family and friendships. As an advocate of progressive social programs she was often the target of brickbats and caricature. Yet typical devotion to her can be found in a quote here of Adlai Stevenson "Her glow . . . warmed the world." An ability to laugh at herself to triumph over personal adversity in her own and in her chil dren's marriages and a genuine interest in people are reflected in these columns. ROOSEVELT, Franklin D
Naval Sketches of the War in California.
New York: Random House 1939. Presentation copy to the son of Roosevelt's Secretary of the Treasury First edition first printing one of 1000 copies. Presentation copy inscribed by Roosevelt on title page "Franklin D. Roosevelt for Robert M. Morgenthau". Morgenthau 1919-2019 was the son of Roosevelt's friend and Secretary of the Treasury during Roosevelt's presidency Henry Morgenthau Jr 1891-1967. At the time of presentation Robert Morgenthau who grew up living nearby the Roosevelts was serving as a lieutenant-commander in the Navy. He later served seven years as US Attorney for the Southern District of New York followed by 34 years as District Attorney for New York County; winning nine elections to retain his post and serving until he was 90 years old. "In many years of collecting sketches paintings and engravings relating to the navy of the United States" FDR writes in his Introduction "I had found virtually none which had connections with naval operations in the Pacific in 1846 and 1847 during the war with Mexico. When therefore I had the opportunity a few years ago of acquiring the original sketchbook of Gunner William H. Myers U.S.N. I realised its historical value". The sketchbook's original "monetary" value was $900 the highest price FDR ever paid for an item in his naval collection. Compelled to publish the "pictorial record" because of "its historical value" FDR convinced Random House of its importance volunteered to supply an introduction designated his secretary Missy LeHand as his liaison to the Grabhorn Press and commissioned Captain Dudley W. Knox who had previously edited several volumes on naval history for which FDR provided forewords to write the text. Folio. Original marbled paper boards backed by white paper stamped in imitation of white morocco titles gilt to recent red label to spine grey endpapers top edge trimmed others untrimmed. Colour frontispiece title page and text printed in blue red and black with 27 colour plates. Marks to spine and rear cover wear to extremities short closed tear to first blank small glue residue mark to rear free endpaper; a very good copy. hardcover
