br. Quando Cioran annotava nei suoi Quaderni che i discepoli di Martin Buber si opponevano alla pubblicazione delle lettere inviate dallo scrittore all'amante, dopo aver conosciuto «l'amore... fisico proprio alla fine della sua vita», naturalmente non poteva immaginare che una situazione analoga si sarebbe ripetuta per lui stesso. In tarda età Cioran fu infatti travolto dalla passione per una giovane professoressa tedesca, Friedgard Thoma, al punto di scriverle: «Lei è diventata il centro della mia vita, la dea di uno che non crede in nulla, la più grande felicità e sventura che mi sia capitata». Dopo la morte di Cioran, la Thoma raccolse in un libro le lettere dell'anziano filosofo, raccontò i loro incontri e narrò anche l'amicizia sorta con Simone Boué, la compagna di Cioran.
