‎0 Planche N°46, format 29 x 40 cm (toutes marges). Chromolithographie d'époque avec le timbre à sec de l'Imprimerie Chaix (Lugt 1777c). Notre exemplaire est une des très rares épreuves imprimées sur papier Japon, toute petite trace de punaisage dans l'extrémité de la marge supérieure droite (Our plate is one of the few copies printed on Japanese paper. Original plate in good condition). LES MAITRES DE L'AFFICHE, prestigieuse publication d'art, éditée par l'atelier de lithographie Chaix, dont la parution s'étala de décembre 1895 à novembre 1900. Chaque livraison comportait 4 planches de reproduction en chromolithographie d'une remarquable qualité d'impression des plus belles affiches illustrées des grands artistes français et étrangers (auxquelles il faut ajouter 16 planches de lithographies originales offertes en prime aux abonnés). Lors de l'Exposition universelle de 1889, fut organisée la première exposition rétrospective dévolue à l'affiche, celle-ci devait valider la reconnaissance officielle d'appartenance de l'affiche au monde de l'art. Jules Chéret (1836-1932) y sera sacré '' Maître de l'affiche '', c'est aussi à cette date que Seurat commencera à collectionner les affiches de Chéret. ‎Kentfield California: The L-D Allen Press 1954. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine/very good. Dean Mallette. One of 175 copies quarto size 146 pp. Marie-Henri Beyle 1783-1842 is likely best remembered today for his novels "Le Rouge et le Noir" and "La Chartreuse de Parme" and is considered one of the earliest authors of realism. Stendhal saw much of the Europe of his day; as part of the Napoleonic army he participated in the 1812 invasion of Russia and the retreat therefrom; served as the French consul in parts of Italy and eventually moved to Paris being buried in Montmarte. <br/><br/>Stendhal's "Journals" provide a fascinating glimpse not only into some of the places to which he travelled but more importantly into his inner thoughts; he was one of the Allens' "esteemed authors" and they were excited at the chance to publish an excerpt of his "Journals" when approached with the idea by Professor Francis Carmody. <br/><br/>As stated in the Allen Press bibliography "this was our fourth edition to be produced entirely by hand with hand-crafted materials throughout. We were now convinced that this method was our proper métier - that the handpress is the most satisfactory instrument in a chimerical attempt at the craftsmanship standards set by Kelmscott Doves and Ashendene presses" p. 39. This book was selected as one of the AIGA fifty books of the year. <br/><br/>___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full Fortuny printed cloth from Venice of antique red on a dull gold background headbands of black and gilt title page in red and black in opposing vertical columns each section with headpieces of one of the two wood engravings by Mallette Dean one of an elaborate quill pen forming the shape of a fleur-de-lis the other of a cluster of grapes and leaves; handset Romanée type Crown & Sceptre paper hand-made in England with the watermark "British Hand Made" quarto size 10.25" by 7.25" pagination: 1-6 7-146. Dust wrapper of plain black Italian laid paper with gilt lettering on the spine. <br/><br/>___CONDITION: Fine with clean boards perfectly straight corners totally without rubbing a strong square text block with solid hinges the interior is clean and bright and entirely free of prior owner markings; clean crisp as new. ‎VD 16 J 772; Vischer C 557; Rudolphi 512; Wellisch A 11.8. - Griechisch-Lateinische Ausgabe der Sentenzen des Johannes Stobensis (5. Jh.), herausgegeben von Conrad Gessner. Der Text ist parallel in zwei Spalten angeordnet, hier in der dritten Auflage. Die erste Ausgabe bei Froschauer erschien 1543, eine weitere folgte 1549. "Ein grösseres Werk unternahm er im Frühjahr 1542: die Herausgabe der Blumenlese der grössten Philosophen und Dichter Griechenlands des Johannes Stobaeus, die im Jahr 1535 in miserabler, grob fehlerhafter Ausgabe zu Venedig erschienen war. Gessner besorgte einen genauen griechischen Text und setzte ihm seine lateinische Übersetzung gegenüber" (Hans Fischer, Conrad Gessner 1516-1565, S. 26). - Schön erhaltener Einband mit Plattenstempeln Lukrezia und Justitia auf beiden Deckeln, umgeben von zwei Rollstempeln, eine schmale Rolle mit Häuptern, eine breitere mit Szenen aus dem Neuen Testament, äussere Bordüre ornamental. Datiert 1565 und mit den Initialen I E N versehen. Diese beziehen sich auf den Besitzer Johannes Ebner aus Nürnberg, dessen hs. Besitzvermerk sich auf dem Titel befindet "Sum ex libris Johannes Ebneri Noricj Empt(us) Lipsiae p(ro) 4 s(chilling) 20 gl Anno 1565"" (gekauft in Leipzig für 4 Schilling und 20 Gulden). Ein weiterer Besitzvermerk auf Titel verso und auf S. 632 "Brath." (?). Kleiner Stempel auf Vorsatz "Bibl. Bernard. Vrat.". Mit Exlibris Paul Ad. Leemann. - Untere äussere Ecke des Titels alt hinterlegt, im ganzen schönes Exemplar.‎
