Re-backed preserving original sprinkled calf boards. Upper corner of rear cover restored. End papers are renewed with quality laid paper after period style. Interior is clean. An inscription written in an old hand on a front blank leaf reads: "Ex domo Authoris Maii 4. 1677" From the house of the author May 4. 1677. William Owtram 1625-1679 was an English conformist theologian known for his great skill in rabbinical learning. In 1669 Owtram became Archdeacon of Leicester and in 1670 he was made Prebendary of Westminster 1670. Richard Baxter spoke of him as " one of the best and ablest of the conformists." DNB. Owtram is mainly known for his learned work "De Sacrificiis libri duo" an in depth study of religious ritual sacrifice. The book is divided into two parts; part 1 treats of ritual sacrifice in general and of the Biblical Hebrew rituals in particular. The sacrificial practices of the Gentiles are also mentioned. Part 2 discusses the Christian concept of sacrifice in reference to the death of Christ on the cross. The entire work was written in large part to counter the Socinian early Unitarian concept that Christ's death was not atonement for humanity's sins. Owtram defends the doctrine of atonement through vicarious punishment in both Hebrew and Christian scriptures. He argues that Christ's death was an expiatory sacrifice which took away the sins of mankind. The book was also influential in Dutch Socinian debates. ‎Valencia: Fundacion Biblia Espanola 1876 . A fine facsimile of the Complutensian Polyglot named after the place of its publication Alcalá de Henares "Complutum" in Latin. It was the first polyglot Bible and one of the finest monuments of printing. The original was printed from 1514-17 though overall publication of the Complutensian Polyglot Bible was delayed while work on the Old Testament continued to allow both the Old and New Testaments to be published together as a complete work in 1520 though apparently the volumes were not circulated until 1522. See Darlow and Moule 1411 for the whole story. The print-run consisted of 600 copies on paper and six on vellum of which only 150 are known to survive. In America OCLC locates copies at Princeton Indiana and Marquette; in addition several libraries own a volume or two. Full light brown leather with covers decoratively stamped in blind and spines in gilt. . Six volumes folio being a complete facsimile of the Complutensian Polyglot Bible first published in Alcala in 1514-17. . Frequent paraphrase word play switches in verb tense and truncated phrases modeled somewhat on modern Hebrew poetry characterize the translation. Commentator Harold Bloom professor of Humanities at Yale has attracted unusual attention stating that the author of "J" was a woman inspired by former King David whom she praised in the substitute figure of Joseph. She was says Bloom a secularist who in her pervasive comic irony commends an intense sense of life symbolized by the Yahweh she has created as the appropriate human aspiration. His argument does not significantly draw from or contribute to biblical scholarship. There are very general comparisons to "modern" authors particularly Shakespeare and to a lesser extent Kafka Mann and Tolstoy with an occasionally rich insight.
