‎Am 6. April 544 uberreichte Arator seine Historia apostolica, ein Bibelepos, das die Apostelgeschichte in zwei Buchern von 1076 bzw. 1250 Hexametern behandelt, dem Papst Vigilius mit einem Widmungsbrief. Schon sieben Tage nach der Uberreichung begann Arator, inmitten der Wirren des ostgotisch-byzantinischen Krieges, mit Genehmingung des Papstes sein Werk in der Kirche S. Petri ad uincula in Rom offentlich unter grossem Beifall vorzulesen: die letzte offentliche antike Dichterlesung, von der wir Kunde haben. Wege ihres reichen Wortschatzes, ihrer gewandten Ausdrucke, ihrer kuhnen Allegorien und Zahlenmystik und dank ihrem erbaulich-didaktischen Gehalt wurde diese Dichtung im Mittelalter viel gepriesen und gelesen, und ist unter die christlichen , in der Schule zu lesenden Klassiker eingereiht worden. Arator wurde also, bereits im fruhen Mittelalter, zu einem der beliebtesten Dichter und seit der Karolingerzeit wurde auch er im Schulunterricht neben der heidnischen Klassikern verwendet und mitunter selbst uber einen Vergil gestellt. Als Schultext wurde Arators Historia apostolica denn auch zu wiederholten Malen in Autoren-Sammelcodices, versehen mit zahlreichen interlinearen und marginalen Glossen und Kommentaren, uberliefert worden. Unsere neue Edition der Historia apostolica von Arator grundet sich auf alle 27 bis zum Ende des 11. Jahrhunderts (= dem Hohepunkt der Glossierungstatigkeit in den Arator-Handschriften) mit Glossen und Kommentaren versehenen Arator-Hss., und ist zweigliedrig: geboten wird einerseits eine kritische Edition der Historia apostolica mit einem ausfuhrlichen Quellenapparat, welche hinsichtlich der Ausgabe von McKinlay (CSEL 72, Wien 1951) und Perugi (Roma 1911) manche Verbesserungen aufweist, und andrerseits eine erste kritische Ausgabe der mittelalterlichen Glossen und Kommentare zu Arators Historia apostolica. Der kritischen Edition der Historia apostolica und der mittelalterlichen Glossen und Kommentare geht eine eingehende Einfuhrung voraus uber Arators Leben und Werk, das Fortleben der Historia apostolica im Mittelalter, Arator als Schulautor, die Historia apostolica und die Schulautoren-Codices, die handschriftliche Uberlieferung von Arators Historia apostolica, die Testimonia usw. ‎Rocco Schembra rassemble ici pour la premiere fois le dossier complet des centons homeriques sur le Nouveau Testament. Ces poemes sont en effet conserves dans cinq recensions: deux longues (I et II, comptant respectivement a peu pres 2350 et 1950 vers) et trois breves, jusqu'ici inedites (?, ? et ?, chacune d'environ 650-700 vers), toutes editees ici critiquement et pourvues d'un apparat des sources homeriques et d'un second apparat permettant de visualiser les rapports complexes existant entre ces cinq textes. La tradition manuscrite de la premiere recension longue, probablement composee par un certain Patricius et revue au Ve s. par l'imperatrice Eudocie, ne remonte malheureusement pas au-dela du XIIIe s. Cette recension a connu un plus grand succes que les autres a la Renaissance, comme le montre l'histoire de ses editions entre 1501-1504 (editio princeps Aldina) et 1793 (Teucher), editions qui ont elles-memes donne lieu a une tradition manuscrite assez abondante: 12 manuscrits sont des copies de l'edition aldine, voire meme d'une autre edition du XVIe ou du XVIIe s. La seconde recension longue, attribuee a Optimus le philosophe et a Come de Jerusalem, mais qu'il faut sans doute rendre a l'anonymat, est conservee dans trois manuscrits seulement, dont le plus ancien est date du Xe s. Les trois autres recensions, anonymes, sont des recompositions abregees sur la base des deux recensions longues; elles sont conservees dans un nombre plus ou moins important de manuscrits, qu'on situe entre le XIIIe et le XVIe s. L'ouvrage de Rocco Schembra constitue, apres les editions de M.D. Usher et d'A.-L. Rey, une mise au point definitive ? a moins d'une trouvaille inattendue dans une bibliotheque ? sur la tradition des Homerocentones. Ces textes sont non seulement interessants pour la question de la reception d'Homere aux epoques tardo-antique et byzantine, mais le tour de force litteraire qui les a fait naitre a aussi quelque chose de fascinant. Dans cette mosaique patiente, chaque piece a ete extraite de sa composition originale et replacee, avec les autres, dans un nouveau schema, pour former une nouvelle image. Les actes, les mots et les pensees d'Ulysse, d'Achille et des autres, sont devenus des formes vides, animees d'une nouvelle vie et d'un nouveau message, evangeliques. On peut voir cela bien sur comme une virtuostite gratuite, mais l'on peut aussi y lire le symbole de la creation d'une societe de langue grecque et de foi chretienne. Languages: Greek, Italian.‎

‎Les oeuvres de Jean Scot Erigene, maitre irlandais qui enseigna a leEcole du palais de Charles le chauve en la seconde moitie du IXe siecle, sont bien representees dans le Corpus Christianorum, tant pour la Series graeca (7, 18, 22) que pour la Continuatio mediaeualis (31, 50, 161-165). Le volume 166 de cette derniere serie est consacre a l'oeuvre exegetique du maitre carolingien, a savoir une homelie (Vox spiritualis) sur le Prologue de leevangile selon saint Jean et un commentaire sur le meme evangile. Les deux oeuvres sont dignes d'interet, non seulement pour elles-memes, mais aussi pour l'influence qu'elles ont exercee sur la pensee occidentale. L'influence de l'homelie est illustree par le grand nombre de manuscrits qui nous en ont transmis le texte. La precedente edition (Sources chretiennes 151) en denombrait cinquante-quatre, la nouvelle edition en denombre soixante-treize. Tout different fut le sort du commentaire, puisqu'il ne nous a ete conserve qu'en un seul manuscrit, malheureusement mutile: Laon, Bibliotheque municipale 81. Mais ce manuscrit est precieux, puisqu'il est l'exemplaire de travail de l'auteur, annote par lui. Il n'a pas quitte Laon depuis le IXe siecle. Ce fut sa chance, car c'est vraisemblablement a Laon qu'au XIIe siecle fut compilee la Glossa ordinaria sur l'evangile de Jean. Or, le compilateur a largement puise dans le manuscrit 81 de Laon, assurant ainsi a d'importantes portions du commentaire de Jean Scot une large diffusion. Les nouvelles editions de ces deux textes representent un progres sur les editions precedentes (Sources chretiennes 151 et 180). En effet, l'editeur a tenu compte des progres realises dans le domaine des etudes erigeniennes depuis 1972, notamment en ce qui concerne les autographes erigeniens: The Autograph of Eriugena (CCAMA III), Brepols 1996. Thirty-four texts were previously published in inadequate, antiquated and/or inaccessible editions. Another three remained unpublished. The edition is preceded by an original, full-length introduction on the extensive manuscript tradition of the Homilies divided into five chapters. The first four provide a solid investigation of the more than a hundred surviving codices that contain the Homilies, and elaborate on their relationship to each other. The establishment of the text according to the modern requirements of textual criticism is accompanied by a detailed critical apparatus as well as an apparatus of sources and significant parallel passages. A series of indices completes the work. ‎The second volume of the Bibliotheca Basiliana Vniversalis covers all the extant mss, translations and editions of Basil of Caesarea's Homiliae morales, and more than 300 homiletic type adaptations. In addition, it provides descriptions of a number of the mss and editions of the letters that were left out volume one, and of all the editions and translations both of the homilies and the letters from ca.1470 to the present. Besides the native tongue of Basil, some twenty other languages are represented. Throughout an attempt has been made at correcting some of the descriptions of the sixteenth- century composite editions which the homilies share with the letters and the ascetica. Also in this volume have been included many mss, editions and translations of the Vita s. Basilii of Ps.-Amphilochius (CPG 3253), the Laudatio of Ps.Ephraem (BHG 246) and the Laudatio of Ioannes XIII Glykys, Patriarch of Constantinople (1315-1319; BHG 262h) even when they were found in mss containing no works of Basil. The method employed in this volume is very similar to that adopted in the first volume. In the first three chapters all the corpora of the Homiliae and the Hexaemeron are described, in Greek and in eight ancient languages into which Basil has been translated, namely Arabic, Armenian, Coptic, Ethiopic, Georgian, Latin, Old Slavonic and Syriac. Chapters Four to Ten are home to some 6000 mss written both in Greek (Classical en Demotic) and the eight languages. The mss are housed in some 400 libraries whose locations span from the Atlantic Ocean to the Volga River. ‎Los himnos forman parte de la liturgia hispanica hacia finales del siglo V, el mas pobre de nuestra historia literaria. A partir sobre todo de la unidad politico-religiosa de Recaredo (586-601) la creacion poetico-liturgica alcanza su esplendor en el siglo VII, coincidiendo con el florecimiento cultural de este siglo. Su periodo menos creativo transcurre durante la ocupacion arabe (siglo VIII), prolongandose con resultados distintos hasta el siglo XI. La publicacion en 1897 de la obra de Blume (Hymnodia Gothica, AHMA 27) supuso un gran paso para el conocimiento de nuestra himnodia. Desde entonces la investigacion ha olvidado en alguna medida los himnos de la liturgia hispanica y se ha centrado en el estudio de otras partes de la misma. Desde entonces se han conocido manuscritos desconocidos para Blume (que ademas no los leyo personalmente), se ha profundizado en el conocimiento del latin de Hispania y del latin de la liturgia de Hispania (Bastardas, Diaz, Gil, Mariner, Munoz), y tambien han aparecido estudios parciales, pero decisivos sobre los himnos (Thorsberg, Gil, Diaz, Almeida). A la luz de la investigacion que nos ha precedido y teniendo como referencia la edicion de Blume se ha acometido una nueva edicion critica de todos los himnos basada en la lectura directa de todos los codices hoy conocidos y en el respeto al texto que nos han transmitido siempre que ha sido posible. ‎The Infancy Gospel of Thomas (IGT), an early apocryphal writing about Jesus' childhood, was first published from a Greek manuscript in the seventeenth century. At the time, and for several centuries thereafter, scholars believed the text to be the 'Gospel of Thomas' mentioned by a number of early Church writers and frequently associated with gnostics. With the publication of the true Gospel of Thomas from Nag Hammadi in 1956 interest in the text waned. A few scholars published editions of various versions of the text - including Syriac, Ethiopic, Georgian, Latin, and Slavonic - but study of the Greek tradition stalled, despite indications of the existence of a number of manuscripts that could greatly improve our knowledge of the text. This edition brings together all known published and unpublished Greek manuscripts of IGT, assigns them to four separate recensions (Greek A, B, D, and S), and presents them in Greek and English translation. Attention is also paid to the versions, particularly the Slavonic and Latin traditions, which are shown to be translations of Greek A and Greek D, and therefore help to establish the original form of those recensions. The early versions (Syriac, Ethiopic, Georgian, and another Latin translation) are discussed also as they inform the text of Greek S, an important new recension which brings us much closer to IGT's original form and should be considered the new textus receptus for study of the gospel. The edition also features a detailed overview of previous scholarship on the text, and a commentary on the gospel that seeks to situate it in its appropriate theological and socio-historical contexts. Scholars of early Christianity have been waiting centuries for a comprehensive critical edition of IGT. While more work needs to be done on some of the versions of the text, this volume fulfills much of the needs of scholarship by providing a vastly improved edition of IGT in its likely language of composition. ‎Kerygma Petri (Kerygme de Pierre ou Predication de Pierre) fait partie des textes chretiens les plus anciens, puisque il a du voir le jour en Egypte entre les annees 100 et 120. En un temps ou l'affirmation chretienne se cherchait selon des voies plurielles, l'apocryphe petrinien affiche une theologie bien typee, a la fois religieuse et intellectuelle, une sorte de ?« gnose ?» qui se tient cependant dans le courant central du christianisme. Le Kerygme de Pierre n'existe pour nous que sous forme d'une serie de fragments, peu nombreux mais significatifs, dont nous devons la conservation surtout a Clement d'Alexandrie. Le jeu des citations du Kerygme de Pierre dans les ecrits de Clement merite de retenir l'attention : l'auteur des Stromates cite volontiers cette oeuvre qu'il considerait comme une production de Pierre en personne et dont il est, en meme temps, un utilisateur interesse. C'etait deja le cas, au milieu du 2e siecle, pour le gnostique Heracleon au dire d'Origene. Au centre de l'apocryphe petrinien se tient une Exhortation de Pierre aux chretiens (Fragments 2 a 5) : elle confronte les trois religions (la paienne, la juive, la chretienne) et les caracterise en fonction de la perception du Dieu createur et transcendant. Les autres fragments du Kerygme de Pierre (Fragments 1 et 6-10) dessinent des espaces de sens precis concernant la mission et la conversion, l'hermeneutique et la christologie. Pierre et les Douze sont presentes comme detenteurs du monopole de la mission en Israel et dans le monde. La conversion est une transformation intellectuelle et l'intelligence est la compagne de la foi. Un biblicisme chretien s'affirme ( ?« Nous ne disons rien sans l'Ecriture ?») ; et les etapes de la carriere de Jesus sont indiquees a l'aide de testimonia, de textes-preuves deja traditionnels. Le personnage du Christ semble relever '?une ?« christologie haute ?» : il est salue comme ?« Loi et Logos ?» et peut-etre est-il associe au Createur comme Commencement et Puissance personnifies. Mais le message fondamental qui traverse le Kerygme de Pierre est celui du monotheisme, non pas un monotheisme judeo-chretien consensuel, mais un monotheisme specifiquement chretien - presente de maniere polemique. Ce ?« monotheisme christologique ?» de l'apocryphe petrinien est au centre du mandat missionnaire du Ressuscite et de la predication apostolique ; il se nourrit de l'accomplissement pascal des propheties et il constitue la pierre de touche de la valeur des religions. Cette reflexion n'est donc pas sans interet pour le debat actuel sur les monotheismes et les religions. Tels sont quelques uns des problemes litteraires et theologiques qu'aborde la presente etude qui s'articule autour de trois axes : (1) une analyse detaillee des contextes citationnels dans lesquels les fragments du Kerygme de Pierre sont transmis ; (2) une nouvelle edition du texte grec accompagnee d'une traduction ; et (3) un commentaire approfondi de chacun des fragments, qui prete une attention soutenue a la litterature intertestamentaire juive et aux anciens apocryphes chretiens. Apres avoir largement commente l'Ancien Testament et les Evangiles, Olivi abordait les epitres de Paul, avec la lettre aux Romains et la premiere lettre aux Corinthiens, dont le commentaire fut probablement interrompu par sa mort. Sur une oeuvre centrale pour sa doctrine de la justification par la foi, ce texte utilise et critique le commentaire de Thomas d'Aquin (1272-1273), pourtant peu diffuse ; il introduit aussi certains elements eschatologiques et ascetiques propres a leur auteur. ‎The Liber elegantiarum (Venice 1489), by the Valencian notary Joan Esteve (fl. c. 1442-1487), is an outstanding and quiet original product of early humanistic European lexicography. Conceived partly as a bilingual Catalan-Latin dictionary, it by far surpasses this goal to become in addition an epistolary manual and an aid to grammar, besides providing an often picturesque collection of humanist sayings and literary excerpts. Above all it offers dramatic evidence of the multifacetted expansion of Italian humanism and the crucial role played by the brilliant Neapolitan court of the King of Aragon. As a Romance lexicon, Joan Esteve?s work is also one of the first great repertories to include the vernacular as a source language (slightly after Tranchedini?s Vocabolario) and probably the first to be printed, before Palencia?s Universal Vocabulario (1490), Nebrija?s Dictionarium (c. 1495) or Valla da Girgenti?s Vocabularium vulgare (1500). This edition of the Liber elegantiarum is comprised of two main parts. The first consists of a complete introduction analysing the broad spectrum of its historical, textual and lexicographical aspects. After a revision of previous studies and comments on the Liber elegantiarum, a thorough description and collation of all extant copies confirm that this is indeed a unique Venetian edition, which can be reconstructed and explained by the new data provided. Information about the life and activities of the author, Joan Esteve, is also considerably expanded, namely concerning his stay in Italy and his various occupations in Naples, as a royal scribe and others, before practicing as a notary in Valencia. The work is conveniently framed within the context of the educational evolution in the late medieval period and its grammatical, rhetorical and lexicographical traditions, thus better identifying and evaluating the wide range of sources (from classical to mediaeval and humanist), that have been notably enlarged. Finally, the heterogeneous and loosely ?lexicographical? technique is examined in detail. The second part is a complete critical edition of the dictionary itself. The critical apparatus is primarily aimed at recording its very frequent printing errors and the alternative readings found in its numerous sources. These include a full range of genres (lexicography, grammar, rhetoric, chronicle, novel, theatre, dietetics) and of periods, from classical (Festus, Fulgentius, Nonius Marcellus) to medieval (Papias, the Catholicon), and especially humanistic authors (Barzizza, Caoursin, Facio, Fieschi, Filelfo father and son, Perotti, Piccolomini, Platina Poggio or Valla), systematically identified and reported in the apparatus fontium. In the complementary section of notes (Adnotationum) comment is offered on the adaptation of the source texts, many of them lacking critical editions and conveniently transcribed for the first time. ‎This volume contains a critical edition of two previously unedited anonymous poems, the Liber prefigurationum Christi et Ecclesie and the Liber de gratia Novi Testamenti. Both works seem to have been written in France during the reign of King Philip I (1060-1108). The Liber prefigurationum is a compendium of biblical typology.
