Abdülhamid II and the Muslim world.
New English Original bdg. HC. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. [xii], 398 p. Abdülhamid II and the Muslim world. "Abdulhamid II is no doubt one of the most controversial Ottoman Sultans in history. A massive literature continues to florish about him and his policy of pan-Islamism. Sometimes permeated by biased and subjective approaches, this literature is increasingly deminated by more balanced and objective accounts depicting a more realistic image of the Sultan ed the developments of his reign. The present book represents a fine example of the latter group of studies. It contains a well-documented anlysis of the policies of Abdulhamid II, particularly pan-Islamism, with due regard to the international political environment and the intellectual movements surrounding the idea of Islamic unity and solidarity.".

Tahtacilar: Tahtaci kimligine ve demografisine giris.
Fine Turkish Paperback. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In Turkish. 136 p. Tahtacilar: Tahtaci kimligine ve demografisine giris. People of Turkey, with an estimated number of 120,000 (2006 estimate), adhering to Alevism, speaking Turkish. They largely inhabit mountainous regions in the Antalya region. Some live in all-Tahtaci communities, others among other ethnic groups. The main village with only Tahtaci is Akcenis, while their main centre is the town of Gömbe. Akcenis is one of its regions best maintained, traditional villages. Their name comes from Turkish for "woodcutters", reflecting their livelihood in mountain regions. The Tahtacis are still organized into clans. Most live from agriculture and forestry. A small minority are still semi-nomadic, exploiting the opportunities of the mountains through summer. The summer season traditionally begins at March 22. This is also the time of the year for their New Year, Nevruz. In its festival, the Tahtacis celebrate their late relatives. There is another important festival in June, staged in Gömbe and a farmers' fair in late August. Tahtacis are, together with other Alevis, historically victims of Sunni Muslim persecution, and are one of the taqiyya groups in the Middle East. By this, they have accepted to be labelled Muslims, and mosques have been forcibly built in their communities. Today, it appears that there are few specific problems in their relation with Muslims. Modern Tahtacis appear open and friendly to strangers, and are conscious and proud of their distinct identity. (Source: Looklex Encyclopedia).

ABÛ MANSÛR AL-MÂTURÎDÎ, (853-944).
[Kitab al-tawheed] Kitâbü't-tevhîd. Açiklamali tercüme. Translated into Turkish by Bekir Topaloglu.
New Turkish Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). Edition in Turkish. 771 p. [Kitab al-tawheed] Kitâbü't-tevhîd. Açiklamali tercüme. Translated into Turkish by Bekir Topaloglu. Abu Man?ur al-Maturidi (d. 333/944) was a Muslim theologian who was born in Ma?urid district of the city of Samarkand which was within the borders of contemporary Uzbekistan and died in the same district. He was probably a scholar of Turkish origin. The region where al-Maturidi lived had been under the Abbasid rule at first, but later in the period of Mutawakkil Alallah came under the rule of Samanids. In that period, a fertile ground for raising competent scholars was introduced by the hands of the state. Imam al-Maturidi got his education and produced works in such a prolific environment. Al-Maturidi was a great Muslim scholar who, together with Abu al-?asan al-'Ash'ari, systemized the theological principles of Sunnite School, advocated the understanding of the Prophet and his Companions regarding fundamental Islamic issues and tried to establish them among Muslims, and fought against extreme views of Mutazilites, Shiites, and other similar sects. Due to their moderate attitudes in the relationship between reason and revelation, these two scholars, i.e. al-Maturidi and al-'Ash'ari, were attracted attention and accepted by wide range of masses. Maturidiyya School which was established after the name of Imam al-Maturidi and in line with Abu ?anifa's understanding is a theological school that has managed to gather half of the Muslim population around it. Al-Maturidi's Kitab al-Taw?id is one of the fundamental books of this school. Despite this fact, it is not possible to say that Kitab al-Taw?id is adequately known in scholarly circles especially among the adherents of Maturidiyya School.

DR. MOHAMMAD REFAAT AL-EMAM..
Kitab al-tawheed. Critical ed. by Bekir Topaloglu, Muhammed Aruçi.
New Arabic Original bdg. HC. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). In Arabic. [xLii], 582 p. [Kitab al-tawheed] Kitabu't-tevhid. Critical ed. by Bekir Topaloglu, Muhammed Aruçi. Abu Man?ur al-Maturidi who lived about a century after Abu ?anifa, and Abu Musa al-'Ash'ari who adopted Sunnite creedal principles in the last third of his life also employed a similar method. The Sunnite Theological School that has been developed around these scholars and their disciples has managed to gather more than ninety percent of the Muslim world. Even though the idea that the Sunnite Theological School was founded by al-'Ash'ari has gained wide currency, examining the works that have come to us from the earliest period of Islamic theology show us that it was Abu Man?ur al-Maturidi who carried out that task. It is an undeniable fact that al-Maturidi's Kitab al-Tawhid has been the source of the books penned after it in terms of methodology, contents and ways of inference.

New Turkish Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Turkish. 343 p. [Umayyads, (661-750)] Emevîler, 661-750. Umayyads, founded in Damascus by Mu'awiya b. Abu Sufyan and lived for 90 years, was the first dynastical state in the Islamic History. The Umayyad period is well-known with the transition of the office of caliphate into a dynasty as well as with fight against opposing groups and conquests gained outside. In this period, in which Istanbul was sieged for several times, the boundaries of the state have stretched from Turkestan to inner France and from Anatolia to India thanks to the conquests gained in east and west, thus spreading Islam rapidly in this vast land. The Umayyad period, in which studies in the field of Islamic sciences increased, and consequently led to increased number in the production of the books, witnessed the emergence of the first political and sectarian movements as well. The foundations of Islamic art was also laid in this period.

ALI IHSAN YITIK.
Dogu dinleri.
New Turkish Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). Edition in Turkish. 315 p. Dogu dinleri. Eastern religions. The "Eastern religions" concept usually refers to the non-Abrahamic religious traditions of Indian and Chinese origin. If we leave aside far-fetched arguments, such as the idea that the term "Abraham" is a distorted variation of the words brahmin or berâhime, that the expression "flesh-soul" refers to the bodhi tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment, or similarly that Hezekiel also signifi es Buddha as "of Kapila", again in relation to his birth place Kapilavastu, there is no reference to these faiths in the Qur'an. Possibly as a consequence of this situation, Turkish sources have remained limited to the translations of the Works written in various Western languages. Whereas, many mystical views and practices specific to Indian and Chinese religions are among the most signifi cant resources not only for Sufi practices, but also today's new religious movements. It has been recognized that some trends which emerged and spread in the West, particularly aft er 1950, have started to find supporters in Türkiye in recent years. Most of the time these trends claim that they are not associated with any religious faith or cult, and that they only rely on scientific research and contemporary methods; however, there is a need to learn about the religious faiths to which these movements belong, so that their basic teachings and practices can be understood and interpreted correctly.

While analyzing the outlines of the Abbasid history, this book exhibits an approach that presents the period in a chronological stream and centers around the major events and facts that constitute the basic Dynamics of the era, rather than a caliph-centered narrative style.

BURHANETTIN TATAR.
Din, ilim ve sanatta hermenötik.
New Turkish Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). Edition in Turkish. 205 p. Din, ilim ve sanatta hermenötik. Hermeneutics in religion, science and art. The most distinctive quality of hermeneutic thinking which distinguishes it other various schools of thought, such as the conceptual analysis of an object, linguistic depiction of an historical phenomenon, or attempt to validate a religious fate in terms of Philosophy-Kalam, is the thought that accepts existence as a dual process that always creates and to solve the historical crisis or a particular problem. To the author, no way of thinking can have an authentic perspective unless it adequately addresses the existential problem or crisis. Otherwise, ideologies which supersede reality, cause existence to surrender to thought, and hence detach us from reality, are revered as thought. The hermeneutic endeavor, in this aspect, is an effort to understand progress as a process in which each authentic thinking experience tries to overcome the existential crisis, drawing attention to the deep damage inflicted on societies by revering some ways of thinking or ideologies.

MEHMET ÖZDEMIR.
Endülüs.
New Turkish Paperback. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 12 cm). Edition in Turkish. 415 p. Endülüs. Andalusia. Today, as in the past, the name Andalusia arouses interest in the Islamic world. However, this interest stems more from sentiment than it from knowledge about Andalusia. In anyone of the muslim countries, including Türkiye, one can witness that whenever a person hears the name Andalusia, they are suddenly overcome by both sadness and admiration. For the Muslim consciousness, the culture and civilization of the Andalusians are remembered with admiration, while the complete loss of this nation is remembered with grief. Since 1492, Andalusia has been a "paradise lost" for Muslims. For every Muslim land which faces foreign occupation, Muslims feel the fear of Andalusation. Accordingly, there is no emotional indifference towards Andalusia. Yet, it is difficult to say that there have been sufficient efforts to study, analyze and understand the history of Andalusia. In other words, though there has been sufficient mourning for Andalusia, there have not been enough effrts to rediscover it. For the Islamic world, making a persistent and effective move to compete with other civilizations is only possible if Muslims form a healthy connection with their past. This book, concentrating on the history of Andalusia, is written to pave the way for such efforts.

ÖMER FARUK AKÜN.
Divan edebiyati.
New Turkish Paperback. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 12 cm). Edition in Turkish. 184 p. Divan edebiyati. Diwan literature. Divan literature is an important branch of Turkish literature developing within Islamic civilization. In this work, the living master of the classical Turkish literature, Ömer Faruk Akün examines this unique form of literature which continued without interruption for six centuries from the end of the Anatolian Seljuks to the Ottomans. The writer discusses the conditions that paved the way for divan literature and its formation process, the verse forms that founded divan poetry, the literary discipline that raised divan poets, and the context and aesthetics in divan poetry that defined the tradition. An example of Akün's interpretation of the verse forms of divan literature may be gleaned from the following quotation: "This literature is composed of odes by the court poets praising emperors, lyrics in each of which an unchanging and ideal beauty is described and the pains of a platonic love are singed gently, demure terci'-bend and terkib-bends, rubâîs that squeeze emotions and thoughts most densely into a small volume, and mathnavis that tell of love aff airs, the heroes and heroins of which are always the same.".

AFIFE BATUR, SELÇUK BATUR, NUR AKIN.
7 centuries of Ottoman architecture. A supra-national heritage. 25-27 November 1999, ITU Taskisla, Istanbul.
New English Paperback. 4to. (30 x 24 cm). Edition in English. 487 p., b/w plates. 7. Centuries of Ottoman Architecture. A Supra-National Heritage. 25-27 November 1999, ITU Taskisla, Istanbul. Osmanli mimarliginin 7 yüzyili: Uluslarüstü bir miras. Papers presented to the international congress held on 25/26/27 November 1999 at ITU Taskisla Campus, Istanbul. "At first it was envisaged to assemble the papers of the Congress in a single book. In spite of all the additional effort and financial burden it incurred, it was finally decided to prepare two books for publication: one in Turkish and the other in English and French. it was a major preference to publish the papers presented to the Congress which lasted for three days and which provided a dense medium of information, exchange of ideas and discussion, as a source of reference that would meet the varying needs of a much wider audience. The products of Cem Erozu's research on 'The Musical Build-up of Architect Sinan's Works', promising an interesting point of view, was on display at Taskisla, throughout the Congress. It was our sincere wish that the scientific level of the papers assembled in these books would be of an international quality. We hope that this wish has come true.".

AGAH HAZIR.
Religion-state relations in Turkey and Iran: Ideologies, institutions and international influences.
New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 312 p. This book compares religion-state relations in Turkey and Iran by adopting a historical perspective. It explores the various historical trajectories, international developments and cultural elements that generated distinct religion-state relations in these two national contexts. It argues that the main determinants of this relation derive from the varying degrees of institutionalisation of religious establishments. Historical analysis reveals that the Turkish state inherited a type of state tradition in which religion was strongly controlled and incorporated to the state structure. Conversely, in Iran, especially after the Safavid period, state tradition was marked by the relative autonomy of religious establishments from the state. The influence of international factors on religion-state dynamics is also analyzed. Direct international factors are found to have been more influential in the Iranian case whereas in the Turkish case indirect factors played a more decisive role. This book also argues that it is misleading to point to differences between Shi a and Sunni sects in an essentialist manner to explain the different paths that these two countries followed.
