‎BERNARD LEWIS.‎

‎Islamin siyasal dili. [= Political language of Islam]. Translated by Fatih Tasar.‎

‎Very Good Turkish Paperback. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm) Edition in Turkish. 176 p. Islamin siyasal dili [= Political language of Islam]. Translated by Fatih Tasar. "What does jihad really mean? What is the Muslim conception of law? What is Islam's stance toward unbelievers? Probing literary and historical sources, Bernard Lewis traces the development of Islamic political language from the time of the Prophet to the present. His analysis of documents written in Arabic, Persian, and Turkish illuminates differences between Muslim political thinking and Western political theory, and clarifies the perception, discussion, and practices of politics in the Islamic world.". "Lewis's own style, combining erudition with a simple elegance and subtle humor, continues to inspire. In an era of specialization and narrowing academic vision, he stands alone as one who deserves, without qualification, the title of historian of Islam."-Martin Kramer, Middle East Review.‎

‎ISMAIL PIRGE (Famous pocketknife craftman master of Bursa).‎

‎[IMPORTANT AUTOGRAPH LETTERS from EARLY PIONEER of TRADITIONAL BURSA KNIFE and POCKETKNIFE CRAFTSMANSHIP] [3 Autograph letters signed Ismail Pirge].‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original three autograph letters. 1+1+1 p. 'Ismail Pirge Biçak, Destere ve Tarak Imal ve Satis Yeri' letterhead. Signed by Ismail Pirge, who was the most important Turkish knife and pocketknife craftsman and manufacturer in Bursa city, third of six generations. They are two kind request letters. Written to Osman Bey. Dated 1948. In Ottoman script. One is written by a pencil, another is by a fountain pen with a black ink. Between the years 1877-1878 the Ottoman - Russian War (93 Harbi) after the Turks from the Balkans migrated to Anatolia, there was also a knife master Ismail Bey. In 1879, he started to work in Yahya Usta's shop (Yesilyayla Biçakçisi) in Okçular Çarsisi (one of famous bazaar which means 'Archery Bazaar' in Bursa city which still has touristic crafts) and started to produce knives and agricultural tools. When he died at a young age in 1885, his son Mehmet (Pirge) continued to do the affairs of Ismail Usta. The art of knives was thus passed on from father to son. In 1934, Mehmet Bey received the surname "Pirge" with Turkish Surname Law which means 'master who trained masters'. Ismail Pirge was son of Mehmet Pirge. At Okçular Bazaar, he and his craftsmen produced knives and accelerated trade with manufacturing. Thus, he began sending his products to a large part of Turkey, Iraq and Egypt in the 1970s. These autograph letters shed light on early history of this art comes from Ottoman tradition.‎

‎Mesâhirü'n-nisâ. Vol. 1.‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Contemporary 1/4 black leather bdg. Demy 8vo. (22 x 14 cm). In Ottoman script. 371 p. Mesâhirü'n-nisâ. Vol. 1. Biographies of women from Islamic and Turkish world. "Mesahiru'n Nisa" Mehmed Zihni Efendi's is one of the most important works in the tradition of Islamic historiography. Within this tradition, a partial examination has been carried out on books written on social classes to determine on how much emphasis has been given on the "type and number" of women. The most important difference that separates "Mesahiru'n-Nisa" from previous traditional books on social classes is the reason it was written. The author wrote his work at the request of "Maarif Nezareti" ( Ministry of Education) to be read to young girl students at "Darulmuallimat" at that time. Zihni Efendi portrayed a "model Muslim woman profile" in his study. Within this framework, the author tried to realize three aims: Women who have become noted in different artistic, social, scientific and occupational areas not because of their gender but because they provide as an example with what they have done to young girl students. On the other hand, the moral side of a woman was given importance and very many moral women introduced in their various aspects were given as an example of their eminent personalities. In particular, emphasis was given on being a "good wife" and a "good mother.". ‎In the education of tasawwuf: Nafs, tawhid and zat. Translated by Seyma Yesilçavdar. Prep. by Mustafa Tatci, Musa Yildiz.‎

‎New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). Edition in English. 76 p. "When Fahri (qs), one of our Shaykh's faqirs (derwishes) and the one capable of carrying the amanah (.) wished to come to us, he was in a place from where it would be difficult to come. He wished to know the right ways of tariqa and the secrets of marifa (knowledge of Him, given by Him) that had reached into my heart. Since I was far away from him, his questions motivated me to write this epistle. As my faults are plenty, I said Allah is powerful enough to guide me in the right way. We belong to Allah an to Him we shall return.". The book in your hands is a translation of the Risale-i Rushdiyye, an epistle in Arabic by Mehmed Nasuhi al-Khalwati al-Uskudari about the subtleties of seyr u sulook, the journey to Allah. In this epistle, Nasuhi Effendi answers the questions of his dervish Fahreddin Effendi of Besiktas regarding the Tasawwuf concepts of nafs (the self), tawhid (the Oneness of Allah) and zat (the Divine Essence) which many people find difficult to grasp. With this translation, it is our humble hope that this epistle will reach out to many more dervishes like Fahri Effendi who are seeking true guidance on the path, and thus bring the teachings of Hazrat Nasuhi, themselves transcendent of time and place, to hearts ready to recieve them...‎

‎American foreign missions to the Ottoman Empire: The education of Armenian women and girls.‎

‎New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 150 p. The American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) was one of the first establishments to introduce a Western-style educational system to the peoples of the Ottoman Empire. This thesis is an examination of the emergence of interest in foreign missions among American women in particular, and the latter s contribution to missionary activities. It seeks to determine how and why educational facilities for Armenian females were established and their social and religious impact, largely from the perspective of the missionaries themselves. It looks at how contact with Armenians prompted adjustments in missionary approaches and policies towards educational missions. The notion of educated Christian womanhood entailed the championing of female education and a re-imaging of the role of women as wives and mothers. The promotion of female education facilitated new opportunities for Armenian women via teaching and evangelism. The central argument of this thesis is that American missionary activity significantly contributed to the increased interest in female education among the Armenian communities of the Ottoman Empire in the second half of the nineteenth century.‎

‎BEDI ÜZ-ZAMAN EBÛ'L-IZ ISMAIL b.AR-RAZZAZ AL-JAZARI (El-Cezeri), (1136-1206).‎

‎The book of knowledge of ingenious mechanical devices.= Olaganüstü mekanik araçlarin bilgisi hakkinda kitap. [FACSIMILE].‎

‎New English Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). Introduction in English and Turkish; [360] p. color facsimiles of the earliest of all copies, dating 1206 (preserved in the Library of Topkapi Serai, Istanbul, No. 3472), color ills. The book of knowledge of ingenious mechanical devices.= Olaganüstü mekanik araçlarin bilgisi hakkinda kitap. [FACSIMILE]. Al-Jazari was a Muslim polymath: a scholar, inventor, mechanical engineer, artisan, artist and mathematician. He is best known for writing 'The Book of Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices'. Kitab fi ma'rifat al-hiyal al-handasiya, (lit. 'Book in knowledge of engineering tricks') in 1206, where he described 100 mechanical devices, some 80 of which are trick vessels of various kinds, along with instructions on how to construct them. The only biographical information known about him is contained in his famed Book of Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices. Like his father before him, he served as chief engineer at the Artuklu Palace, the residence of the Mardin branch of the Artuqids which ruled across eastern Anatolia as vassals of the Zengid dynasty of Mosul and later of Ayyubid general Saladin. Al-Jazari was part of a tradition of artisans and was thus more a practical engineer than an inventor who appears to have been "more interested in the craftsmanship necessary to construct the devices than in the technology which lay behind them" and his machines were usually "assembled by trial and error rather than by theoretical calculation." His Book of Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices appears to have been quite popular as it appears in a large number of manuscript copies, and as he explains repeatedly, he only describes devices he has built himself. According to Mayr, the book's style resembles that of a modern "do-it-yourself" book. Some of his devices were inspired by earlier devices, such as one of his monumental water clocks, which was based on that of a Pseudo-Archimedes. He also cites the influence of the Banu Musa brothers for his fountains, al-Saghani for the design of a candle clock, and Hibatullah ibn al-Husayn (d. 1139) for musical automata. Al-Jazari goes on to describe the improvements he made to the work of his predecessors, and describes a number of devices, techniques and components that are original innovations which do not appear in the works by his precessors. The most significant aspect of al-Jazari's machines are the mechanisms, components, ideas, methods, and design features which they employ. (Source: Wikipedia). There are 50 devices that Al Jazari designed and explained how they function in his book and created technical drawings of them in such detail that allow to reconstruct in its original size, make, model and full functionally. This nice facsimile edition, fully executed in color, is based on a manuscript present in the Library of Topkapi Palace, (ms. no. 3472). It is dated 1206, andaccording to the foreword, is the earliest extant ccopy of al-Jazarî's work.‎

Al-Ahsai, known as Ibn Abi Jumhur, was the first among the Twelver Shi'is to attempt to forge a synthesis of the various intellectual strands of his time. While he started off as a theologian deeply influenced by Mutazili thought, as can be seen from his early qalam works, he set out in his late work 'Mujli...' to amalgamate Mutazilite and Asharite qalam, Peripatetic and Illuminationist philosophy, as well as philosophical mysticism in an unprecendented and unique manner. (From introduction). "His supercommentary on his Maslak al-afhâm fi?'ilm al-kalâm and on the commentary on al-Maslak entitled al-Nûr al-munjî min al-z?alâm.".‎

He describes their family journeys from Çankiri to Tosya in a very bright style which was a day and night and eventful journey. They crossed Devrez Baglari by a horse carriage. He gave some examples from Tosya (Kastamonu) local dialect like 'Kadinine' to 'Nine' [i.e. Grandmother]. He cited in very detail that his father's hajj and Hejaz journey with his grandfather. After that confusions and difficulties in the last period of the Ottoman Empire, press in the Ottoman Empire, political events, murders and crimes in Istanbul city was told by Tevfik. All kind of events, according to him, a betrayal to the empire and Islamic culture. Based on his memoirs, he was a conservative person. A fine manuscript is not only describing which is an autobiography as well, showing a person who has passion to be an Islamic scholar, but also reflecting thoughts of an anti-revolutionary and the last period of the Ottoman Empire besides events in Istanbul city which was heart of an empire. It's unpublished. Extremely rare.‎

‎[OTTOMAN COUNTERCOUP of 1909 - HAREKET ORDUSU] Autograph letter signed Mahmud Sevket Pasa and Erkân-i Harb Kolagasi Izzeddin [Çalislar].‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original paper autograph letter handwritten signed by Mahmud Sevket, Izzeddin Çalislar. (33x21 cm). In Ottoman script. 2 p. Repaired back side. Request of a surgical operation by 'Said bin Mehmed' (Siroz Redif Taburu Efrâdindan) and Mahmud Sevket Pasha and Izzeddin's confirmations. Signed by Mahmud Shevket Pasha as "commander of Turkish countercoup of 1909 (Hareket Army)" and by Izzeddin [Çalislar] as "Erkân-i Harb Kolagasi (Batallion commander)". The Ottoman countercoup of 1909 (13 April 1909) was an attempt to dismantle the Second Constitutional Era of the Ottoman Empire and replace it with an autocracy under Sultan/Caliph Abdul Hamid II. Unfortunately for the advocates of representative parliamentary government, mutinous demonstrations by disenfranchised regimental officers broke out which led to the collapse of the Ottoman government. Characterized as a counterrevolution, chaos reigned briefly and several people were killed in the confusion. It was instigated by some parts of the Ottoman Army in a large part by a certain Cypriot Islamic extremist. Dervish Vahdeti reigned supreme in Istanbul for 11 days. The Countercoup was put down in the 31 March Incident, on 24 April 1909 by the Army of Action (Hareket Ordusu) which was the 11th Salonika Reserve Infantry Division of to the Third Army (Ottoman Empire) commanded by Mahmud Shevket Pasha. Extremely rare.‎

‎MEHMED SAID PASHA, (Mabeyn baskatibi, also known as 'Küçük Said Pasha' [i.e. Said Pasha the Younger] or 'Sapur Çelebi', Ottoman monarchist, senator, statesman and editor of the Turkish newspaper Jerid-i-Havadis), (1830-1914).‎

‎[OTTOMAN CHIEF of the COUNCIL of the STATE] Autograph document sealed 'Sura-yi Devlet reisi Mehmed Said'.‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original manuscript autograph document signed by Mehmed Said Pasha sent to Trabzon Vilayat, Ordu Kaza, Hasbamane Nahiya local manager, faziletlu 'Mehmed Ali Sevki Beyefendi'. 33,5x20 cm. Folded. 1 p. In Ottoman script. Mehmed Said Pasha was an Ottoman monarchist, senator, statesman and editor of the Turkish newspaper Jerid-i-Havadis. He supported the CUP, the political party which came to power after the Ottoman coup d'état of 1913. His origin comes from 'Sebazâde family' from Ankara. He became first secretary to Sultan Abdul Hamid II shortly after the Sultan's accession, and is said to have contributed to the realizations of his majesty's design of concentrating power in his own hands; later he became successively minister of the interior and then governor of Bursa, reaching the high post of grand vizier in 1879. He was grand vizier seven more times under Abdul Hamid II, and once under his successor, Mehmed V. He was known for his opposition to the extension of foreign influence in Turkey. n 1896, he took refuge at the British embassy in Constantinople, and, though then assured of his personal liberty and safety, remained practically a prisoner in his own house. He came into temporary prominence again during the revolution of 1908. On 22 July he succeeded Mehmed Ferid Pasha as grand vizier, but on the 6 August was replaced by the more liberal Kâmil Pasha, at the insistence of the Young Turks. Also during 1908, Mehmed Said Pasha bought the famed Istanbul arcade in the Beyoglu (Pera) district, today known as Çiçek Pasaji ("Flower Passage"). The modern name became common in the 1940s; during Mehmed Said Pasha's ownership in the 1900s and 1910s, the arcade was known as Sait Pasa Pasaji ("Said Pasha Passage"). During the Italian crisis in 1911-12, he was again called to the premiership. He was again removed from power by the Savior Officers (who backed the Freedom and Accord Party (Liberal Union) against the Committee of Union and Progress) and replaced by a new cabinet supported by the Officers and the Freedom and Accord Party. The CUP would return to power, however, the next year after the Ottoman coup d'état of 1913. (Source: Wikipedia). Seven lines on special paper with watermark 'Joynson Superfine'. Letter of request to provide teaching for some students in the region.‎
