Ce volume regroupe les contributions de spécialistes représentant près d'une dizaine de nations, revisitant le temps des Restaurations en Europe. Ces contributions témoignent de l'actualisation permanente de l'historiographie contemporaine, que ce soit dans le domaine politique, militaire, social, économique, culturel ou religieux. Elles permettent également de saisir comment, entre héritage et innovation, un "passé qui passe mal" continue à irriguer la pensée et l'action politiques des régimes restaurés. L'émergence de nouvelles élites bouscule les hiérarchies sociales existantes. Mais c'est aussi la question nationale qui surgit, ce dont témoignent notamment la production culturelle et le souci de rechristianisation de populations marquées par un temps de sécularisation plus ou moins marquée. Des populations qui, par ailleurs, ne sont pas résignées et résistent parfois à cette réaction conservatrice. On note en particulier l'affirmation de l'idée de souveraineté nationale, voire de souveraineté populaire. Surgit alors le couple violence insurrectionnelle-répression étatique, notamment dans l'Europe des péninsules méditerranéennes. Loin d'être ce moment quelque peu figé encadré par deux séquences révolutionnaires -1789 en amont, les années 1850 en aval -, le temps des Restaurations est un moment d'intenses circulations et d'échanges transnationaux."
