Erstausgabe eines rhetorischen Wettstreits Tübinger Studenten über europäische Politik und Geistesgeschichte im Fürsteneinband des Collegium Illustre. Das durch Herzog Ludwig begründete, von Herzog Friedrich 1594 eingeweihte Adelskolleg bot, als zweite weltliche Eliteschule des Landes, für Adelige aus ganz Europa eine Ausbildung in Politik, Geschichte, Logik, Recht, Sprachen, Naturkunde und Ökonomie, um die Regierungselite des jeweiligen Landes heranzubilden. Selbstverständlich gab man sich standesgemäß und trat, besonders bei Disputationen, in violetten Samtmänteln auf. In diesen kostbaren Samt wurde, wie unser Exemplar, eine kleine Anzahl der "Kolloquiumsbände", wohl im wesentlichen für die etwa 20 Teilnehmer, eingebunden. Ein europäisches Kolloquium im Tübingen des frühen 17. Jahrhunderts mit Diskussionen über pro und contra der Europäischen Nationen und Länder unter Berücksichtigung ihrer Geschichte, Kultur, Religion, Sprache und Literatur! "Nahezu zweihundert Jahre vor Friedrich List und dem Freiherrn von Wangenheim, den Vätern der staatswissenschaftlichen Fakultät, debattierten die Kollegiaten über Verfassungsprinzipien, Verwaltungsfragen und Probleme der Finanzpolitik. Un’Europa come luogo geografico con un'identità etnica esisteva già nell'antichità estendendosi parallelamente all'espansione del mondo greco; con l'Impero romano abbraccia tutte le aree a nord del mar Mediterraneo fra Gibilterra a ovest e il Don a est. La conquista dell'Islam nel VII-VIII secolo provoca poi una drastica riduzione del territorio europeo. Il percorso di Friedrich Prinz prescinde da un esame dei singoli popoli europei, ma s'incentra sugli eventi storico-culturali che hanno caratterizzato l'evoluzione comune: per esempio il monachesimo fra Tarda antichità e alto Medioevo, gli influssi del mondo irlandese e anglosassone sulla Francia «culla» della storia europea, lo scontro fra il pagano Simmaco e il cristiano Ambrogio sul mantenimento del'altare della Vittoria a Roma. La cultura bizantina è trattata nella misura in cui ha influito sullo sviluppo storico occidentale. Grande attenzione è dedicata agli aspetti sociali: la famiglia, il matrimonio e l'amore, la donna, il potere, la povertà, il cibo, la guerra, l'arte e il sapere. Ovviamente l'accento maggiore è posto sull'evoluzione fra il IV e il IX secolo, ma questi limiti cronologici sono valicati per non perdere di vista elementi fondamentali del mondo germanico, ma soprattutto slavo-latino occidentale e mitteleuropeo orientale, con l'obiettivo di delineare il percorso della nascita della cultura europea. Lo stesso discorso vale per gli sviluppi di storia del pensiero che germogliano nell'arco temporale abbracciato da questo libro, ma solo in seguito fioriranno: razionalità, libertà, etica del lavoro, creatività dell'Europa, nonché ruolo degli influssi islamici su questo continente. L'arco cronologico coperto da questo volume si inscrive tra due nomi di capitale importanza per la storia dell'Europa moderna: Costantino (306-337 d.C.), che, attraverso l'Editto di Milano (313), rese il cristianesimo religione ufficiale dell'impero romano; e Carlo Magno (742-814), considerato ancor oggi il padre dell'Occidente per la sua fondamentale opera politica e culturale. Si tratta di cinquecento anni fondamentali, quelli compresi all'incirca tra il 300 e l'800 d.C., che vedono succedersi eventi epocali, quali la caduta dell'impero romano d'Occidente, le invasioni barbariche, la diffusione capillare del cristianesimo, l'effimera riconquista compiuta da Giustiniano di parte dei territori occidentali, la presenza araba, fino a quella che è stata definita la "rinascenza (o rinascita) carolingia", dovuta a Carlo Magno, primo «imperatore dei Romani» nell'800, dai lontani tempi di Romolo Augustolo (476). Mettendo mano a una bibliografia veramente sterminata, Prinz delinea un mirabile affresco di questo periodo fondamentale, occupandosi minutamente non solo dei fatti politici, ma anche di quelli culturali e sociali, proprio allo scopo di illustrare in tutte le sue valenze il momento, nell'arco di molti secoli, della nascita dell'Europa moderna. Da un lato, dunque, il contributo dei diversi popoli intervenuti sulla scena europea (germani, celti, slavi, bizantini, arabi), e il loro legame con il cristianesimo e con la cultura scritta; dall'altro, gli sviluppi della storia del commercio, della società e delle istituzioni, con l'analisi di temi nodali come l'ordinamento feudale, la cultura, la religione, il matrimonio, la famiglia, la sessualità, la posizione sociale della donna, ecc. The book is once again available with a new Introduction by the author that brings the work up to date and helps place it in its current context. This book remains the starting point for study of the pre-annalistic tradition of Roman history. When first published the volume sparked a lively debate among classicists and historians of the ancient world. Previous scholarship had often assigned the pontifical chronicle a central role not only in preserving the history of the early Republic but also in shaping the form of the annalistic tradition. But the author showed that these assumptions rested on insecure foundations; to a large extent they misrepresented the historiographic development of the annalistic tradition as we know it from above all Livy and Dionysius of Halicarnassus. Perhaps the book's most controversial contention was that the final eighty-book edition of the chronicle which previous scholars had dated to the later second century BCE is more probably a massive reworking of materials in the Augustan period. This finding will likely require a considerable revision in our understanding of the development of the annalistic tradition. In the course of making these innovative arguments the author offers extensive information about the origins of the annalistic tradition and about the early history and historiography of Rome. Bruce W. Frier is Professor of Classics and Roman Law and Henry King Ransom Professor of Law University of Michigan.
