Aleck was also a monitor as was Joseph Nicholas a boy who had been in the school but who had made an “unprovoked attack on a quiet but dirty boy Constantine†subsequently left. This story is of how William tried to overrun much of Louis' garden claiming that it was in defence of his “Fatherland†while John stood by. Pinkerton's collection of voyages was published over the course of six years in a total of seventeen volumes. The six volumes devoted to Europe comprise the largest section of the collection. They are "of great value for its texts which are sometimes given entire and sometimes abridged with as much as possible of the traveler's own language" Hill. <br /> <br /> Pinkerton was something of a character. Having apprenticed to an Edinburgh solicitor upon the death of his father and receipt of his inheritance he immediately turned his back to a legal career and dedicated himself to literary matters. Through his works as a historian poet and playwrite he made friendships with the likes of Horace Walpole Walter Scott and Edward Gibbon and through his controversial religious views and short temper he eventually lost them. Halbleinen der Zeit. *Anonym erschienene Verteidigungsschrift, erste Ausgabe, recht selten. - "Alois Fuchs (1794-1855 in Schwyz) war ein römisch-katholischer Priester in der Schweiz. Nachdem er 1814 bis 1824 in Landshut bei Johann Michael Sailer und 1823 bis 1824 in Tübingen bei Johann Sebastian von Drey, Johann Baptist von Hirscher und Johann Adam Möhler Theologie studiert hatte, erhielt er 1817 die Priesterweihe. 1816 bis 1823 war er Lehrer an der Lateinschule in Schwyz, 1824 bis 1828 Pfarrer und Lehrer in Riemenstalden und 1828 bis 1834 Lehrer an der Lateinschule und Spitalpfarrer in Rapperswil SG. Hier gelangte er wegen seiner liberalen Gesinnung in Konflikt mit dem Bischof von Chur und St. Gallen. Aufsehen erregte er mit seiner am 13. Mai 1832 gehaltenen Predigt Ohne Christus kein Heil für die Menschheit in Kirche und Staat, worin er u.a. eine Dezentralisierung der Kirche, Diözesansynoden, eine Liturgie in deutscher Sprache und die Abschaffung der Zölibatspflicht forderte. Da er den von der Kurie verlangten Widerruf von acht aus dem Zusammenhang dieser Predigt gerissener Stellen verweigerte, wurde er 1833 suspendiert, akzeptierte aber 1835 halbwegs und 1842 vollständig das päpstliche Urteil, worauf der Nuntius dieses aufhob" (Wikipedia). 1833 bis 1836 war Fuchs Bibliothekar in der Stiftsbibliothek St. Gallen und lebte von da an wieder in Schwyz.
