Jahrhundert. Die Essays zeigen vor allem, wie stark das Bild, das der Islam und Europa voneinander hatten, von den historischen Rahmenbedingungen und den gängigen Vorurteilen geprägt war. Die Betonung Hegt auf den großen Vermittlern der arabischen Welt in Europa, also Forschem und Schriftstellern wie Louis Massignon, H.A.R. Gibb, Marshall Hodg- son, Jacques Berque und dem schillernden T.E. Lawrence. Hourani selbst war ein solcher Vermittler, ein Mann zwischen den Welten, der mit seiner eleganten Prosa, seinem enormen Wissen und seiner beharrlichen Suche nach Verständigung zu den großen Islamisten des Jahrhunderts zählte. Dieses Buch könnte man auch als eine Hommage an seine Vorbilder bezeichnen.
