THE ARGUMENTS OF THE EMPEROR JULIAN AGAINST THE CHRISTIANS; Translated from the Greek Fragments Preserved by Cyril Bishop of Alexandria; to Which Are Added Extracts from the Other Works of Julian Relative to the Christians
Ares Publishers Inc. . 1980. Hardcover. Fine in No Dust Jacket dust jacket. Exact Reprint of the Tetypeset original 1809 Chicago 1930 ARES PUBLISHERS INC. In his school edict Julian prohibits Christian teachers from using pagan scripts e. G. The Illias that formed the core of Roman education. This was an attempt to remove some of the power of Christian schools by alienating their students from Roman society not to mention a satirical attack at what Julian may have viewed as a hypocrisy: Christian schools teaching the Bible as the sole source of knowledge while simultaneously teaching classical pagan texts as well knowledge of which was needed for success in Roman society. In his tolerance edict of 362 Julian decreed the reopening of pagan temples the restitution of alienated temple properties and called back Christian bishops that were exiled by church edicts. The latter was an instance of tolerance of different religious views but may also have been an attempt by Julian to widen a schism between different Christian sects further weakening the Christian movement as a whole.; 8.25 x 0.5 x 5.5 Inches; 119 pages . 0890053014 . Tcherikower, Elias
DI UKRAINER POGROMEN IN YOR 1919
Publishers cloth. 8vo. 372, [2] pages. 24 cm. First edition. In Yiddish. Bibliotek fun YIVO. English title page: The Pogroms in the Ukraine in 1919. Continuation of the work Antisemitizm un pogromen in Ukraine, 1917-1918 published 1923. A detailed scholarly study of the terrible Ukrainian pogroms in 1919 written by Elias Tcherikower (18811943) , historian of Russian Jewish life and anti-Jewish violence.
The 1919 Bolshevik suppression of Jewish autonomy and the simultaneous wave of violence and mass murder against Ukrainian Jewish communities by nationalist, White, and other forces (the Ukrainian pogroms) strongly shaped Tsherikovers subsequent scholarly career. He helped compile an essential collection of documents and testimonies on Jewish autonomy and its dissolution (Di idishe oytonomie un der natsyonaler secretariat in Ukraine; 1920) and later edited a related volume of documents and memoirs on revolutionary-era Jewish life, In der tkufe fun revolutsye (Berlin, 1924) . From 1919, Tsherikover devoted himself especially to gathering evidence about pogroms. By the time he left Russia for Berlin via Kovne/Kaunas in 1921, he had compiled a massive archive (now housed at YIVO) . Settling in Berlin, he began a massive scholarly project on pogroms with other Jewish scholars and activists, including Simon Dubnow, Yosef Schechtman, Nokhem Shtif, Jakob Lestschinsky, and N. Gergel. Tsherikover himself wrote two historical studies on pogroms: Antisemitizm un pogromen in Ukraine, 19171918 (published in Yiddish and Russian, 1923) and Di Ukrainer pogromen in 1919, published posthumously (1965) . Tsherikover and his archive also played an important role in the 19261927 Paris trial of Shalom Schwarzbard. (YIVO Encyclopedia; Tsherikover, Elye) . Subjects: Jews Ukraine - History - 20th century. Jews - Persecutions - Ukraine - History - 20th century. Ukraine - History - Revolution, 1917-1921.Pogroms - Ukraine - History - 20th century. Ukraine - Ethnic relations - History - 20th century. TEICHMAN, Eric.
Journeys Through Kam (Eastern Tibet) - 01
Title: Journeys Through Kam (Eastern Tibet). Author: Eric Teichman Publisher: London: Edward Stanford, Royal Geographical Society, 1922. Pre-Dates Book! Item is in Original Condition, with Blue Wrappers - As Issued, Complete with All the Ads! Notes & Condition: Complete with a superbly detailed fold-out colour map showing his route, boundaries, towns and settlements (in Tibetan and Chinese names), Teichman's exciting preliminary account reveals his very important and thorough explorations in Tibet, on the basins of the rivers Salween, Mekong, Yangtze and Yalung, between the latitudes of Jyekundo and Atuntze. With vivid imagery he highlights the most remarkable features of the high mountains bordering the Yangtze, the Ong Chu Valley, and the gorges of the Mekong, Yunnan, Jyekundo. To this he adds remarks on the caravan trade routes through Tzachuka, on old Tibetan forts, on big game and birds, and on various Tibetan groups and nomads. Teichman is recognized for his meticulously detailed work on his expeditions to Tibet, which he later imparted in a well-known book published later in the same year. Titled, "Travels of a Consular Officer in Eastern Tibet together with a History of the Relations between China, Tibet and India," the narrative is as exemplary as are his works and experiences in some uncharted regions. 8vo. 19 pages, plus a large fold-out color map measuring approximately 52 x 37 cm, and photographic plates for illustration. Original condition with blue wrappers, titles to front, and containing all the ads. This is a complete issue, seldom found in such good and original condition. Excerpt from the text: "The secret of successful and agreeable travel in Eastern Tibet is to depend as much as possible on the natives, the native animals, and the native produce... no tinned stores of any kind are needed..." "... Eastern Tibet, inhabited by one of the hardiest races of the world..." "All this region from the Yalung to the Salween is known to the Tibetans as Kam... The Kambawa (natives of Kam) are considered rather a wild and barbarous race by the more highly civilized Tibetans of Central Tibet... The real wild men of Tibet are the nomads of the north-east..." "It is hoped that the heights of the principal mountains of Kam will some day be ascertained by scientific measure....." "We marched up the Yalung for about a week... a swift dark green stream, flowing through alternate gorges and stretches of cultivated valley, at an average of 11,000 to 12,000 feet... thickly dotted with monasteries which serve as religious centers for the surrounding nomads... The Bon sect is generally understood to be a relic of the old nature worship... compromised with the invading Buddhism... much of the lamaistic ritual reversed..." End Excerpt. British diplomat, explorer and orientalist, Eric Teichman (1884-1944) first went to China in 1907 as a student interpreter in the consular service. Assigned to the Northwest, he rose to be a consular officer and in 1917 accompanied some Chinese officials on numerous trips throughout Shaanxi, Sichuan, and Gansu Province to investigate compliance with the Anglo-Chinese Opium Treaty. Despite the fact that he suffered from severe arthritis and the crippling effects of an earlier riding accident, he continued to travel extensively, returning home from his 1919-1935 Beijing-embassy posting by way of Turkistan.
