Mehr Meer geht weit über eine Nacherzählung einer Kindheit und Jugend hinaus; es ist die Beschwörung dessen, was von den vielen Lebensorten und Begegnungen bleibt: Töne und Klänge, Farben und Stimmungen, einzelne Szenen und Blitzlichter ("Die Bilder, sage ich, in Ehren. Aber zuerst kommen die Gerüche."). In vielen kleinen Selbstbefragungen, in Dialogen, Gedichten und Erinnerungsbildern geht Ilma Rakusa ihrer Geschichte auf den Grund: der vom Vater initiierte ständige Ortswechsel, das Paradies des Meeres und der Küste in Triest und Grado, erste Küsse, erste Reisen, die Musik und die Begegnung mit den Ritualen der Ostkirche, die ersten Auslandsjahre in Paris und im damals noch sowjetischen Leningrad. Ilma Rakusa nähert sich ihren frühen Jahren äußerst unsentimental und auch nicht mit dem Eifer der Bekennerin, dafür mit großer Genauigkeit in einem sehr schwierigen Bereich: im Atmosphärischen, das sie mit Knappheit und Präzision erdet. In ihrem Erinnerungsband erstehen die 50er und 60er Jahre des 20.
