‎VINLAND MAP AND THE TARTAR RELATION‎

‎Book has slight soiling to textblock. Dustjacket is price-clipped. DJ has small tears to corner and chipping to spine ends. Light soiling to DJ. ; Evidence concerning the Viking discovery of North America in the tenth and eleventh centuries is so incomplete, investigation of this area of history will be substantially aided by the discovery of new documents. Such is the claim made for the previously unknown manuscripts here published for the first time. They are two documents copied about 1440 from much earlier originals, now lost. The first is an account of Friar John of Plano Carpini's mission to the Mongols in 1245-47. The second is a world map, including the western ocean, with delineations of Iceland, Greenland, and a land mass named Vinland which represents the North American mainland as known to the medieval Norsemen. This map is the earliest known and indisputable cartographic representation of any part of the Americas. As the editors show, the Tartar Relation provides information on Mongol history and legend not to be found in any known source, and a portion of the Map represents the only surviving medieval example based on Norse cartography - a conclusion with far-reaching implications for the history of cartography and of the Viking navigations. OVERSIZED. ; 291 pages‎

‎THE LIMITS OF EMPIRE The Roman Army in the East‎

‎Light shelfwear to DJ. Dustjacket is protected in mylar. ; For more than seven centuries most of the Near East was part of the Roman empire. Yet no work exists which explores the means by which an ancient power originating in the western Mediterranean could control such a vast and distant region. What was the impact of the army presence on the population of the provinces? How did Rome respond to the challenge posed by the desert and its nomadic population? Isaac here offers answers to these questions in the first comprehensive treatment of the Roman military presence in the Near East. Using both well-known and neglected sources, he reassesses the means by which Rome achieved and maintained its control over the region. His study, now revised and updated to reflect recent research findings, casts new light on an important issue which has far-reaching implications for the understanding of ancient and modern imperialism. ; 506 pages‎

‎PIETY AND FAMILY IN EARLY MODERN EUROPE Essays In Honour Of Steven Ozment‎

‎Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. ; St. Andrew's Studies in Reformation History; 0.8 x 9.4 x 6 Inches; 242 pages; At first sight, the subjects of piety and family life may appear to have little in common. Yet, as the essays in this volume make clear, there are in fact a number of shared features and points of contact that make the study of these issues a particularly fertile area for scholars of the Reformation period. Whether it be the concept of an individual's relationship with God - so often articulated in familial terms, the place of domestic devotions, or the difficulties that faced families split by rival confessional beliefs and mixed marriages, this book demonstrates how piety and family life were interwoven in the social and theological landscape of early modern Europe. Inspired by the works of Steven Ozment, the volume is divided into two sections, each of which deals with a particular concern of his writings. The first four chapters address issues of Reformation theology and the medieval heritage, whilst the remaining seven examine the spiritual life of families. Together they underline how modern scholarship by broadening its conceptual outlook and bringing together seemingly unrelated subjects, can provide a more sophisticated understanding of the past.‎

‎HISTORY OF THE GOTHS‎

‎Bumping to top of spine. Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. ; Incorporating exciting new material that has come to light since the last German edition of 1980, Herwig Wolfram places Gothic history within its proper context of late Roman society and institutions. He demonstrates that the barbarian world of the Goths was both a creation of and an essential element of the late Roman Empire. Through a fresh examination and reassessment of the Latin and Greek sources, Wolfram provides a wealth of detail on the formation of the Gothic tribes, their migrations, and the later history of the Ostrogothic and Visigothic settlements. ; 625 pages‎

‎EUROPA TRIUMPHANS Court and Civic Festivals in Early Modern Europe‎

‎V1: bumping to top corners with 1 hard bump/dent (1 cm) to lower edge of front board. VG DJ: minor staining to DJ. Dustjacket is protected in mylar. V2: very light bump to 1 corner of book else book is fine. VG+ DJ: minor staining to DJ. Dustjacket is protected in mylar. ; Two Volume Set. ; 2 Volume Set. Publications of the Modern Humanities Research Association; 3.4 x 11.2 x 8.6 Inches; 1000 pages; A landmark in the study of early modern Europe, this two-volume collection makes available for the first times a selection of the most important texts from court and civic festival books. Festival entertainments were presented to mark such occasions as royal and ducal entries to capital cities, dynastic marriages, the birth and christening of heirs, religious feasts and royal and ducal funerals. Europa Triumphans represents the chronological and trans-European range of the court and civic festival. These festivals are considered not simply as texts, but as events, and are introduced by groups of scholars, each with a specialist knowledge of the political, social and cultural significance of the festival and of the iconography, spectacle, music, dance, voice and gesture in which they were expressed. To demonstrate the geographic spread and political significance of festivals, and to illustrate the range of aesthetic languages they deploy, the festivals included in these two volumes are grouped in the following sections: Henri III; Genoa; Poland-Lithuania; The Netherlands; The Protestant Union; La Rochelle; Scandinavia; and The New World. These texts provide many valuable insights into the variety of political systems and historical circumstances that formed them. Beautifully produced with 148 black-and-white and 23 colour illustrations, Europa Triumphans represents an invaluable reference source for the study of early modern Europe. It presents texts both in transcription and translated into English, and is supplemented with introductory essays and commentaries.‎

This volume contains 16 articles covering Homeric studies, published in the journal Greece and Rome Studies during the last 25 years. The contributors include some of the best-known scholars in the field.
