All the participating artists had played a significant role in the history of the museum and in Belgian contemporary art. Nonetheless, the exhibition was not intended to offer an exhaustive overview of recent Flemish art, but to explore the most prominent aspects of some of its facets while also highlighting the groundbreaking nature of an institution that supported artists who were little known at the time. Born in Antwerp, Jules Schmalzigaug was a well-travelled Belgian futurist painter who came of age at the turn of the 20th century. He lived for a time in Paris, but eventually moved to Venice to participate in the Italian avant-garde art scene. Following the outbreak of the First World War, he relocated to the Netherlands and began experimenting with light and colour. Declared unfit for military service, he became lonely and fell into depression, and committed suicide in 1917. Forgotten for a time, his work was rediscovered in 1980 and has since appeared in international exhibitions on futurism. This monograph on Schmalzigaug contributes to a wider appreciation for his artistic genius. // Belgisch kunstenaar Jules Schmalzigaug (1882, Antwerpen) groeit op in een welgesteld milieu in het Antwerpse fin-de-siècle. Hij reist door Italië en Duitsland, leeft een ijd in Parijs, en installeert zich uiteindelijk in Venetië. Daar maakt hij al snel deel uit van een groep jonge avant-gardekunstenaars die de strijd aangaan met het nostalgische passeïsme. Hij is de eerste Belg die deelneemt aan de Italiaanse futuristische beweging. Na de uitbraak van de Eerste Wereldoorlog werkt hij verder in Nederland aan zijn intrigerende experimenten met licht en kleur. Op vierendertigjarige leeftijd pleegt Schmalzigaug zelfmoord en daarmee komt een abrupt eind aan een veelbelovende carrière. Het werk van Jules Schmalzigaug wordt in 1980 herontdekt: verschillende van zijn werken worden getoond op de grote overzichtstentoonstelling Futurismo & Futurismi in het Palazzo Grassi in Venetië in 1986. En ook in eigen land wordt hij - na tentoonstellingen in Brussel, Gent en Oostende - eindelijk erkend als een van de belangrijkste Belgische voorlopers van de modernistische avant-garde. Dit credo zal de Belgische fin-desièclekunstenaar Félicien Rops zijn leven lang huldigen. Zijn tekeningen, gravures en illustraties weerspiegelen zijn vrije levensstijl en creatieve geest. Deze uitgave werd opgevat als een monografische catalogus waarin verschillende bijdragen werden verzameld die het resultaat zijn van 10 jaar onderzoek in het Museum Félicien Rops (Namen), vooral op basis van de lijvige briefwisseling van de kunstenaar. De verschillende artikelen belichten de vele facetten van de 'Infâme Fély', die sommigen onder ons nog steeds beschouwen als een van de grootste pornografen van de negentiende eeuw. Deze monografie laat ons in de eerste plaats kennis maken met een kunstenaar die zich op heel wat manieren onderscheidde en een gans netwerk van artistieke en literaire relaties uitbouwde tussen Brussel en Parijs. Het groot aantal gereproduceerde werken maakt van deze publicatie een kunstboek, maar het is tegelijk een boek vol informatie over een personage verankerd in een eeuw die zoveel deuren naar onze hedendaagse wereld openzette.

While the retrospective assembled 90 representative works from the last 30 years of the artist's career, the strength of the exhibition lay not only in the art displayed, but also in the location: the Haus der Kunst, built on Hitler's orders in 1933, was used to exhibit German art "by and for the people" and quickly became a center of cultural propaganda for the Nazi regime. In this space,Tuymans' works, often concerned with power relations and twentieth-century history, were grouped into "islands of meaning" to create a narrative that would resonate with the museum, and Tuymans further conceived of a site-specific mural. In this volume, Tuymans himself guides the reader through the exhibition and offers new perspective on his works' relations both to each other and to the installation space. The book includes an ex-libris bookplate signed by Tuymans.

James Ensor is één van de belangrijkste Belgische kunstenaars die thuishoort in het rijtje van Van Eyck, Rubens, Bruegel en Magritte. Zijn werken zijn van een enorme zeldzaamheid (hij schilderde amper ca 850 werken) en een groot deel daarvan heeft reeds een plaats gevonden in de grootste musea over de hele wereld. Het belang van Ensor kan niet overschat worden. Zijn naam duikt op in alle werken over moderne kunst en hij was grensverleggend in zijn manier van schilderen. Zo heeft hij het pad geëffend voor het onstaan van o.a. het expressionisme, het dadaïsme en het surrealisme en ook vandaag nog zijn kunstenaars zoals Pierre Alechinsky en Luc Tuymans schatplichtig aan het werk van James Ensor. Met de jaren begint de kunstmarkt zich steeds meer te realiseren hoe bepalend Ensor was voor de kunstgeschiedenis en wordt hij steeds meer internationaal gewaardeerd. Reeds tijdens zijn leven, en tot op de dag van vandaag blijven de tentoonstellingen in de belangrijkste musea over heel de wereld (de laatste oa. in het MOMA, Getty Museum en Musée d'Orsay) zich opvolgen en blijft het onderzoek naar zijn werk zich uitbreiden. De markt voor zijn schilderijen en tekeningen droogt dan ook langzaamaan op doordat deze werken hun weg vinden naar de museum-verzamelingen en omdat de weinige beschikbare schilderijen in familiebezit blijven. Collected Stories is Vanriets dertiende individuele tentoonstelling in Galerie De Zwarte Panter de samenwerking begon reeds in 1973. Ze verzamelt vier thema's: van schilderijen geïnspireerd door klassieke beelden uit de Glypthotek in München, via een reeks intimistische huisscènes (de schaduwen van catalpa's in de tuin) vermengd met de vijandigheid van de buitenwereld (de brandstichting in een asielcentrum in Bilzen), dan de epische rouw na de Superga-vliegramp in 1949 nabij Turijn, waarbij het kampioenenelftal van Torino omkwam een rouw die een hele natie beroerde en ten slotte de 41 gouaches aangereikt door de autobiografische dichtbundel Heldenleven die in het voorjaar verscheen bij uitgeverij Polis. Voor de catalogus schreef Jan Vanriet enkele spitse toelichtingen over de inhoud en de achtergronden van zijn werk. Ze worden aangevuld met een essay van de vermaarde Poolse dichter ADAM ZAGAJEWSKI, (Lviv, 1945), een ware ?metafysische dichter? en essayist. Nobelprijswinnaars Czesaw Miosz en Joseph Brodsky beschouwden hem al in de jaren tachtig als de belangrijkste Poolse dichter van zijn generatie. In 2004 won hij de Neustadt International Prize for Literature, in 2016 de prestigieuze Canadese Griffin Poetry Prize en in 2017 de belangrijkste Spaanse bekroning, de Premios Princesa de Asturias. Zagajewski doceerde onder meer aan de Universiteit van Houston en de Universiteit van Chicago.

Tijdens zijn studie aan de Antwerpse academie werd het onderricht er volledig gecontroleerd door de epigonen van Henri Leys. Vernieuwers volgens het impressionisme of pointillisme werd het leven moeilijk gemaakt en zij verlieten de metropool om zich in Brussel te vestigen. De oprichting van Kunst van Heden in 1905 betekende een keerpunt in het Antwerpse artistieke leven, dat langzaam maar zeker opnieuw internationale aansluiting vond. De Eerste Wereldoorlog maakte een abrupt einde aan de stijgende belangstelling naar zijn oeuvre. Zijn oorlogstekeningen werden in 1919 vergeleken met die van Kollwitz, Forain en Steinlen. Na de Groote Oorlog kreeg ook in ons land het expressionisme meer aandacht. Kunst van Heden wijdde haar salon van 1926 volledig aan de moderne Franse kunst. Van Mieghem bestudeerde er belangrijke werken van o.a. Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, Modigliani, Zadkine en Rouault, een confrontatie die een bijzondere invloed op hem uitoefende. De intimistische en religieuze onderwerpen, naast prachtige bloemstukken en stillevens die de kunstenaar onder invloed van de art deco in de beslotenheid van Sint-Paulusstraat 30 maakte, zou hij echter nooit exposeren. Dit boek geeft een uniek overzicht van zijn artistieke zoektocht in die boeiende periode van zijn leven.
