Durante más de dos siglos un buen número de europeos, esencialmente protestantes, vio la historia y los pueblos del Nuevo Mundo a través de los ojos de un hombre: Teodoro de Bry (1528-1598). Este impresor y grabador oriundo de Lieja, una vez establecido en Francfort, pronto descubrió las posibilidades comerciales que el creciente interés europeo por los viajes de descubrimiento y colonización de los territorios de ultramar encerraba para la industria editorial. En 1590, De Bry empezó a editar su Tesauro de los viajes a las Indias Occidentales y Orientales, verdadero best-seller de la época y monumento editorial de la visión protestante del mundo de aquel tiempo, cuya influencia encontrará sucesores iconográficos hasta bien entrado el siglo XIX. De Bry se ocupa personalmente de parte de la realización de América (1590-1634) (Siruela, 1992), volumen del Tesauro dedicado a las Indias Occidentales, mientras que sus dos hijos, Juan Teodoro y Juan Israel, llevaron a cabo la serie dedicada a las Indias Orientales, Asia y África (1597-1628). Avec leurs tableaux historiques surprenants, leurs splendides portraits et leurs carrieres impressionnantes, Suvee, Ducq, Odevaere et Kinsoen sont des representants majeurs de l'art des annees 1800. L'exposition La Fête et la kermesse dans la peinture flamande du XVI e et XVII e siècles se déroulera du 16 mars au 14 juillet 2019. Cette exposition s'inscrit dans le cadre des festivités liées à l'anniversaire de la mort de Pieter Brueghel l'Ancien (mort en 1569), dont le nom est indiscutablement lié à la fête villageoise. Un comité scientifique composé d'historiens de l'art, de spécialistes de la littérature et de musicologues des XVI e et XVII e siècles rédigeront les articles du catalogue et permettront de mieux souligner les interactions entre ces domaines artistiques et de replacer les oeuvres dans leur contexte de création afin d'apporter un nouvel éclairage. Dans l'imaginaire collectif, les réunions villageoises sont principalement associées au nom de Brueghel mais ce genre ne se limite pas à cet artiste. Il prend en outre une autre coloration avec la représentation des scènes galantes, souvent légitimées par l'histoire du Fils prodigue. L'exposition rassemblera plus d'une centaine d'oeuvres provenant de musées nationaux et internationaux, parmi lesquels une majorité de tableaux mais aussi des gravures, des dessins et des enluminures. En outre, les instruments de musique, qui figurent souvent dans les compositions peintes, seront mis en relation avec ces dernières.

De Bruyckere's compelling sculptures have a long and complex creative history. Peter Paul Rubens was one of the most learned, inventive, and prolific artists of the baroque period in northern Europe. His work encompassed portraiture, allegory, religious painting, landscapes, and designs for ornament, tapestry, books, and prints. He also worked as a diplomat, was knighted in two countries, and was acquainted with most of the crowned heads of Europe--many of whom were his patrons. He traveled extensively and frequently, visiting Spain, France, Britain, the northern Netherlands, and Italy. Already in the early seventeenth century Italy was the prime destination of ambitious young artists, and it was there that Rubens spent some of his formative years between 1600 and 1608. Le Musee Jacquemart-Andre a Paris accueille du 11 septembre 2009 au 11 janvier 2010 les chefs-d'oe uvre de la collection Brukenthal, l 'une des plus prestigieuses collections d 'Europe centrale, reunie au XVIIIe siecle par le baron Samuel von Brukenthal (1721-1803). Cette exposition evenement rassemble un choix exceptionnel d' une cinquantaine d'oe uvres flamandes, italiennes, hollandaises et allemandes des plus grands maitres du XVe siecle au XVIIe siecle : de Jan Van Eyck a Jacob Jordaens, en passant par Pieter Bruegel, Hans Memling, David Teniers, Le Titien ou encore Lorenzo Lotto. Le Fonds Mercator a le privilege de publier le catalogue de cette prestigieuse exposition. Le baron Samuel von Brukenthal fut pendant de nombreuses annees un proche conseiller de l' Imperatrice Marie-Therese d Autriche. Tres vite connu comme un collectionneur insatiable, il acquit en quelques annees plus de 16 000 livres precieux, un grand nombre d 'objets d art, 800 gravures et 1 200 tableaux, dont pres de la moitie de l 'ecole flamande. La collection fut tres vite consideree comme l 'une des "plus belles et des plus riches collections a Vienne". Apres une longue carriere dans le domaine politique il devint, en 1777, gouverneur de sa terre natale : la Transylvanie. La collection est alors ramenee a Sibiu (actuellement en Roumanie). Le baron von Brukenthal decide alors la construction d 'un batiment particulier pour l 'accueillir. Il legue ensuite sa collection a l 'Eglise evangeliste avec charge pour elle d' ouvrir le palais au grand public. Inauguree en 1817, le Muzeul National Brukenthal devient l' un des tout premiers musees d' Europe centrale et par la suite, de Roumanie. Jan De Maere, historien d' art et journaliste, est le directeur du Centre de Documentation du Patrimoine flamand. Il est l 'auteur de "The Illustrated Dictionnary of 17th Century Flemish Painters" ou encore "L' Art flamand en Transylvanie" et se place comme le grand specialiste de la collection Brukenthal. Nicolas Sainte Fare Garnot, historien de l 'art, specialiste de la peinture francaise du XVIIe siecle, est conservateur en chef du Musee Jacquemart-Andre depuis 1993. Il est aussi professeur a l' Ecole du Louvre.

Together with Holbein, Anthony van Dyck (1599 -1641) is one of the most important names in British pre-18th century art. Born in Antwerp he was a precocious talent, rising swiftly to become the chief assistant to Peter Paul Rubens, then Northern Europe's most prominent painter. His importance to British art cannot be overstated; during the turbulent years of the reign of Charles I, he single-handedly reinvented portrait painting, leaving behind a legacy that would influence later generations. Van Dyck first came to Britain in 1620 to work for James I. Between 1621 and 1627 he worked in Italy, adding to his clientele of wealthy patrons. Charles I recognised in van Dyck the potential to be the perfect creator of the royal image. The artist returned to London in April 1632 and was almost immediately knighted and provided with an enviable property and pension, becoming the chief painter of the court. His portraits of the royal family and courtiers, imbued with an understated authority and relaxed elegance, were an instant success. His pictures of Charles especially seemed to represent the king as both a powerful sovereign and 'nature's gentleman'. His popularity stemmed from his ease when moving in aristocratic circles, and his talent for flattering almost all subjects. Thomas Gainsborough famously said on his deathbed 'We are all going to heaven and van Dyck is of the company'. The authors not only explore van Dyck's years in England, but also his enduring influence on British art and culture in the centuries following his death, reflected in the way 18th and 19th century British sitters wanted their portraits to convey the gravitas and sophistication the earlier painter had mastered so well.
