You will set out a journey through the time while reading the caricatures that we have chosen from Otoman newspapers and magazines and you will find the understanding and actions of our ancestors in these deep jokes. These areas of transformation, namely millet conception in the Ottoman Empire, modernization, tendencies in historiography, structural and judicial changes in familial relationships, provincial and urban structure in the Ottoman Empire and the relationship between Russia and the Ottoman Empire, determined the titles for the chapters of the book. Ortayli, meticulously examining the archives and sources about the late Ottoman history, gives a comprehensive and multifaceted picture of the Empire.".‎

‎The poetics and politics of place: Ottoman Istanbul and British orientalism.‎

‎New English Paperback. 4to. (30 x 24 cm). In English. 285 p. Color and b/w ills. "This unique collection takes a fresh look at Orientalism by shifting its center from Europe to Ottoman Istanbul and thinking about art in terms of exchange, reciprocity, and comparative imperialisms. This new lens reveals the essential role of the Ottoman city and its patrons and artists in the dialogues that facilitated production, circulation, and consumption of British Orientalist cultures. In this volume, art works are conceptualized as traveling artifacts produced through localized interactions. World renowned scholars and curators analyze the diverse audiences for such art works and the range of differing contexts for their reception both in the 19th century and more recently. In this way, British art is put into a dynamic relationship with an historicized understanding of cultures of collecting and display during the formation of comparative modernities and also with the contemporary postcolonial creation of new national models of exhibition and education. Featuring stunning visuals, this book puts art history in the context of cultural, visual, and literary studies, challenging the orthodoxies of postcolonial theory with the materiality of multiple imperialisms and modernities to offer a new take on the collection, display, and consumption of Orientalist cultures.".‎

‎Istanbul architecture.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (22 x 15 cm). In English. Ills. 266 p. This is the latest in the popular Watermark Architectural Guides series, covering the architecture of this huge and ancient city from Byzantine ruins to modern high-rise. Istanbul is one of the world's most exciting and culturally diverse cities and, like most great cities, it has architecture to match. Covering more than two millennia its buildings range from the lofty and many-tiered aqueducts built by the Romans to Ottoman mosques, with their attendant bath houses, schools and hospitals. In Beyoglu, across from the Golden Horn, banks, arcades, embassies and apartment complexes reflect foreign influences. Here disparate architectural styles such as Belle Epoque, Venetian, Gothic and Art Deco all live on in surprisingly happy harmony. Elsewhere along the Bosphorus visitors can see the Baroque palaces of the Sultans and charming yali - quintessentially Turkish waterside mansions, but looming in the background are the skyscrapers, bridges and other elements of a tech-smart metropolis. This book records all Istanbul's architecture, both historic and modern, with area maps, text and images to provide a comprehensive guide to this exotic city.‎

‎Places of memory.= Hafiza mekânlari. [Exhibition catalogue]. Curated by Murat Tabanlioglu.‎

‎New New English Paperback. Pbo. Dust wrapper. 4to. (30 x 21 cm). In English and Turkish. 218 p. Color and b/w ills. "Exhibition catalogue of the Turkish Pavilion at the 14th International Architecture exhibition at Venice. The Turkish Pavilion was curated by architect Murat Tabanlioglu. The main idea behind "Places of Memory" is directly related to the concept designated by Koolhaas. Countries represented in the exhibition were asked to employ the theme "Absorbing Modernity: 1914-2014" and to show the process of the "erasure of national characteristics in favor of the almost universal adoption of a single modern language in a single repertoire of typologies." The idea is to show how the various architectural styles in the beginning of the 20th century eventually merged into a single style in most of the contemporary world. In "Places of Memory," Derinbogaz looks at the three locations chosen by Tabanlioglu from above, while Taptik goes indoors and offers photos that explore how architecture relates to the proportions of the human body. Taycan mainly focuses on the squares in the city and explores how the idea of public space is experienced by Istanbulites, while Özcan looks at decorative practices in and aesthetic qualities of semi-public locations. Sisman will create a sound installation based on the other artists' work. "Our focus in the exhibition is rather on the concept of place itself, incorporated with the subjective vision of every exhibitor in the team. The works interact with each other via different approaches based on different scales and mediums," Tabanlioglu said. "We chose not to write in advance the story that might emerge from this project. We will see the outcome together. This is a conscious decision that keeps us on edge, but one that also holds potential.".‎

The site is located along the major branch of the Orontes River in the Amuq Valley of Hatay, near present-day Antakya in southern Turkey. It is the largest Middle and Late Bronze Age settlement in the region and was the capital of the Kingdom of Mukish in the second millennium BC.‎

‎Restoration and Conservation Project of Urartian Jewellery Collection of Rezan Has Museum.= Rezan Has Müzesi Urartu Takilari Restorasyon ve Konservasyon Projesi.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (30 x 25 cm). In English and Turkish. 100 p., color ills. Jewelleries such as pectorals (breastplate), medallions, beads, amulets, neck rings, ornamental pins, fibulae, armlets, bracelets, rings and furthermore, the most comprehensive Urartian belt collection of Turkey with approximately 70 belts will reveal the mysterious thoughts, religious beliefs and traditions of the Urartian society. Among the most important factors in the development of the Urartian art of jewellery is the presence of rich mineral deposits of Eastern Anatolia and the profitable use of these deposits by the Urartian jewellery masters. Gold, silver, lead, iron and particularly copper deposits in the region were effectively mined for the first time by the Urartians. With the mission and vision it has upheld since its inauguration, Rezan Has Museum has arduously strived to preserve the historic assets of our land, which has been home to countless civilizations, and to ensure that they are transmitted to future generations. Our most important mission is to safeguard the Museum's jewellery collection of the Urartian civilization, which reigned over Anatolia for 250 years and to entrust future generations with a collection preserved at least its present condition. Each new study on these treasures to be handed down from one generation to the next will shed light not only upon our past but upon our future as well.".‎

‎Antioch mosaics. A corpus.‎

‎New English Original bdg. HC. Large 4to. (32 x 28 cm). In English. 320 p., color ills. "The book includes the most important Antioch mosaic pavements displayed in the Hatay Archaeological Museum in Antakya, Turkey, seventeen different institutions in the USA and the Louvre. The mosaics were brought to light in and around Antioch on the Orontes (Antakya), Seleucia Pieria (Çevlik) and Daphne (Defne) in 1932-37. As a group, the Antioch mosaics demonstrate a remarkable continuity with the Hellenistic artistic tradition as seen in the preservation of classical subjects and decorative devices, such as the illusionistic treatment of the inhabited vine scrolls or ribbon borders. The common use of multiple borders to frame figural panels at Antioch is also reminiscent of the framing of Hellenistic emble-mata, or portable panels prepared in workshops and then inserted at the sites. The three-dimensional treatment of interiors and landscapes, the naturalistic representation of the human anatomy, and the variety of colors employed for the Antiochene compositions, indicate a dependence on painting styles. Such skill in the production of stone 'paintings' effectively denies the solidity of the floor and tricks the eye of the viewer, not to mention their physical relationship to the room itself. Finds from nearby sites (Apamea, Zeugma, Shahba-Philippopolis, and Palmyra) are similarly 'traditional' and point to the existence of a 'school' of eastern art beyond that of the Antiochene workshops. Such illusionism reaches the height of fashion during the Severan period in Antioch.".‎

‎Orientalism in Polish art.= Polonya sanatinda Oryantalizm. [Exhibition catalogue]. 24 October 2014 - 18 January 2015, Pera Museum.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (30 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 360 p., color and b/w ills. The exhibition highlights the orientalist trend in Polish painting, as well as drawings and graphic arts. The works in the exhibition cover a wide period from the 17th to the early 19th centuries. Among others, the exhibition includes drawings by Christian Kamsetzer of his Turkish travels, as well as oriental scenes by artists like Zmurko and Brandt. The artworks exemplify topics related to the Ottoman world, and to a lesser extent, the Near East and North African regions. One section of the exhibition is dedicated to Stanislaw Chlebowski, the court artist of Sultan Abdülaziz. Works by other artists who had visited Turkey, among them Jan Matejko, Waclaw Pawliszak, Jan Ciaglinski, and Jacek Malczewski, are also included. Selected from the collections of Polish institutions ranging from the National Museums in Warsaw, Kraków, Poznan, and Wroclaw, the University Library in Warsaw, to Lazienki Palace Museum, the exhibition brings together approximately 190 works. The apogee of Orientalism, which refers to a cultural current in Europe centred on an interest in the cultures of the East manifesting itself in art, architecture, music, literature, and the theatre, arrived in the 19th century, when a distinct Orientalist current sprang forth from academic painting, inspired first and foremost by the cultures of the Islamic countries of the Middle East and North Africa, as well as of Moorish Spain. In the specific case of Poland, interest in the Orient goes back to medieval times; a natural result of her geographic location, which rendered Poland particularly susceptible to influences from the East. To a large extent, this period in Polish history was defined by successive wars with the Ottomans, and it left an indelible trace in culture. A variety of equestrian types, generic skirmishes and great historic battles were depicted many times by various skilled artists, as well as Oriental characters, landscapes, and genre scenes -first and foremost of the harem. The latter subject matter, popular among audiences, was often taken up by painters who had never been to the East themselves. Exhibition catalogue presents works by the artists among them Jan Matejko, Waclaw Pawliszak, Jan Ciaglinski, Jacek Malczewski, and especially Stanislaw Chlebowski, the court artist of Sultan Abdülaziz, are included, and also sheds light on the artistic influences of Poland's cultural interaction with the East, different from the Western Orientalist approach, through history, diplomacy, battles and travellers.‎
