The htitle reads: ""Praxis Artolloriae Pyrotechnicæ"". Htitle,(6),71,(1) pp.. and 51 engraved plates with 117 figs. (numb. 1-51 of which 2 are unnumb.). One leaf lacks (pp. 17/18) and p. 17 is present in cont. handwriting, but the whole leaf supplied in a fine facsimile on old paper. 2 plates a bit shaved and frayed in margin. Slight browning to htitle, a few minor brownspots. A good copy.‎

‎Scarce second edition. The publisher tells us in the postscript that the book, published 1657, was in much demand and that it was unobtainable, so he was requested by a gentleman (Einen vornehmen Herr) to republish it. This second edition came out without the authors name. It is divided in 2 parts. The first part mainly deals with all kinds of recreative fireworks but also with the making of rockets, fire-water-and storm balls, grenades, pitch, storm wheels and receipts for gunpowder. The second part deals with gunnery and artillery (Ander der Artollery). - Chris Philip S 310.2 - Not in Rumpf and Cockle.‎

‎Second enlaged edition of this scarce treatise of fireworks for war and recreation. The work is divided in five sections: the first 56 pp. to war, pp. 57-146 to 'recreation' and pp. 147-277 to sundials, fortification, geometry and arithmetics. Of the English edition of 1629, Cockle says ""This work, though in advance of anything so far written on the subject in English, does not attain to the standard of Thibourel and Appier. ‎First edition, offprint issue of Arrhenius' famous dissertation, in which he first presented his theory of electrolytic dissociation. Arrhenius was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1903 ""in recognition of the extraordinary services he has rendered to the advancement of chemistry by his electrolytic theory of dissociation"". ‎First edition of the paper which marks the beginning of spectrum analysis. In this work Kirchhoff and Bunsen announced their discovery of the two alkali metals, cesium and rubidium, with the aid of the spectroscope they had invented the year before. These discoveries inaugurated a new era in the means used to find new elements.‎

‎Second edition of this treatise of fireworks for celebration, the first edition issued in 1706. There was a pirated edition in 1741. Frezier was encouraged by this pirated edition and he issued his second edition, which appeared in 1747 in three different versions by different printers. (Chris Philip F 110.5).‎

‎Scarce fourth German edition. The first part of the book deals with the generation of metals...the second with the extraction of silver by mercury. He cites alchemical literature on the origin of the earth, minerals, salts, adding clear descriptions. He excelled in the ""Treatment of silver ores by amalgation, using processes that he himself had discovered and that were in large measure responsible for the wealth of the province."" (DSB).""Barba was a native of the village of Lepe in Andalusia. He entered the church and became pastor of St. bernards at Potosi, in South America. While there he had the opportunity of studying minerals and mining, extraction of silver and assaying, and became very skilful in these branches of science. He embodied his knowledge and experience in the treatise ""El arte de los metallos"", published in Madrid in 1640 in 4to, with illustrations. It was kept as secret as possible by the Spaniards, but when Edw. Montagu, Earl of Sandwich, was ambassador extraordinary to Spain, he obtained a copy and translated two of the five books into English in 1669. The first book appeared at London in 1670, and the two together in 1674. Two German translations followed, one from the English, and long after, another from the French"" and two in French from the Spanish."" (Ferguson I: p.70-71). - Duveen p.42-43 (but not this edition). He was an early marine chemist and a allround scientist and performed some of the first measures of the concentrations of the major salts in sea water. He found that all sea water contains the same salts in nearly the same concentrations. He invented the ""Sampling Bottle""‎

‎First edition of Thomsens main contributions in thermochemistry, undoubtly the most importent contribution from a Dane in chemistry in the 19th century. - The construction of a complete and quantitative system of thermochemistry required an extensive and accurate collection of thermochemical data over and above the observations upon which the principle was based. The amount of data which he amassed was so great that it enabled him the calculation of heats of reaction for practically speaking every fairly common inorganic reaction. The results, which are based between three and four thousand measurements, were later collected in his famous work ""Thermochemische Untersuchungen"" (The Danish original oferred here).‎

‎First printing of these 9 papers by the wellknown French chemist. Proust formulated the ""Law of constant proportion"" which lead to the controversy with Berthollet.‎
