William Darlington (1782-1863) was a Chester County physician and botanist, and a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from PA. He became a botanist at an early age, studied medicine, and graduated from the medical department of the University of Pennsylvania at Philadelphia in 1804. He went to the East Indies as ship's surgeon in 1806. He returned to West Chester in 1807 and was a practicing physician there for a number of years. He raised a company of volunteers at the beginning of the War of 1812 and was major of a volunteer regiment. Darlington was elected as a Democratic-Republican to the Fourteenth Congress; the Sixteenth; and the Seventeenth Congresses. He was appointed canal commissioner in 1825, and served as president of the West Chester Railroad. Romanzi a chiave che svelano gli intrighi di corte, opere troppo fiacche quanto a faziosità socialista, storie d'amore in bengali da cui traspare l'odio per la dominazione inglese, e poi censori ormai insofferenti del loro lavoro, poliziotti sulle tracce di testi proibiti e appassionati bibliotecari indiani: sono solo alcuni dei protagonisti, di carta e in carne e ossa, di un libro dagli obiettivi non meno semplici che audaci - ripensare l'idea stessa di censura. Attraverso approfondite ricerche d'archivio, Darnton ricostruisce, negli aspetti teorici e nell'applicazione pratica, i meccanismi di controllo messi in atto da tre diversi sistemi autoritari: la Francia borbonica del XVIII secolo, dove il libro era un privilegio per pochi e la sanzione regia valeva non solo a reprimere, ma anche a certificare la qualità del prodotto, mentre il censore era al tempo stesso critico letterario e revisore editoriale; il Raj britannico, osservato nel momento in cui, dopo la rivolta del 1857, l'esigenza di tenere d'occhio la produzione letteraria indigena si tradusse in una curiosa mania etnografico-classificatoria; e la Germania dell'Est, dove la censura era parte di un vasto piano di ingegneria sociale e gli apparatcik svolgevano nell'ombra il ruolo di agenti-editori, negoziando permessi di pubblicazione, discutendo le bozze e lavorando per riportare nei ranghi i potenziali dissidenti. Sono prassi censorie distanti nello spazio e nel tempo, eppure capaci di riportare alla luce «un sistema di controllo che permea le istituzioni, colora i rapporti umani e penetra nei meccanismi più intimi dell'anima». E di farci riflettere sui problemi che oggi pone la convergenza di due tipi di potere, «quello dello Stato, che va sempre più estendendo le proprie attribuzioni, e quello della comunicazione, sempre più forte e diffuso con lo sviluppo di nuove tecnologie».

Il padre della patria George Washington aveva gravi problemi di denti - tant'è che a Mount Vernon sono conservate diverse dentiere: di legno, di avorio, di zanna di tricheco o di ippopotamo. A partire da una constatazione apparentemente marginale ed eterodossa, Robert Darnton, con erudizione e gusto nel narrare, ci porta all'interno di un mondo molto più complesso e contraddittorio da come emerge dalle interpretazioni della storiografia dell'Illuminismo, in particolare quella marxista. In questo libro egli affronta quattro temi strettamente connessi fra loro: i rapporti franco-americani, la vita nella Repubblica delle Lettere, le forme di comunicazione e i modi di pensare tipici del Settecento francese. E lo fa, come al solito, rivolgendosi non agli storici di professione, bensì "al comune lettore colto", che guida in luoghi del tutto inaspettati. Rispetto poi ai suoi libri precedenti c'è però una novità, e di un certo rilievo: questa volta Darnton intende "fornire una prospettiva storica" a quesiti, come si usa dire, di scottante attualità: "L'adozione dell'euro mette in crisi il concetto di identità europea? Internet ha creato una nuova società dell'informazione?". Quesiti ai quali risponde in un modo che è sempre spiazzante, offrendo ai miti dell'attualità uno specchio in cui si sveleranno, appunto, come miti.
