Fitzroy R.N. during the years 1832 to 1836" The monograph set out Darwin's theory of the formation of coral reefs and atolls. He extensively revised and rewrote the book for its 1874 second edition to take into account James Dwight Dana's 1872 publication 'Corals and Coral Islands' and work by Joseph Jukes. This is the third edition with Darwin's prefaces to the first and second edition and a preface to this edition by his son Francis Darwin. It also includes an appendix by the geologist Thomas George Bonney on the study of coral reefs since 1874.
