1950Best.-Nr. 171319Huntington WV: Liggett and Myers 1950. Vintage US advertising poster featuring an illustration of Paul Douglas promoting Chesterfield cigarettes. Actor Paul Douglas began at 20th Century Fox as a narrator and caption writer notably narrating several Vitaphone short films. He made his acting debut on the stage and won a Theatre World Award and a Clarence Derwent Award for his portrayal of Harry Brock in Garson Kanin's "Born Yesterday." In films Douglas is well remembered for two baseball comedies: "It Happens Every Spring" 1949 and "Angels in the Outfield" 1951. He was also a powerful presence in screen dramas including "A Letter to Three Wives" 1949 "Executive Suite" 1954 and opposite Barbara Stanwyck in "Clash by Night" 1952. In 1960 he was cast in "The Twilight Zone" in an episode titled "The Mighty Casey" written for him by Rod Serling and based on his character in "Angels in the Outfield." Douglas died just after the completion of filming and his scenes were eventually re-shot with Jack Warden. At the time of his death he was also slotted to appear as Mr. Shendrake in Billy Wilder's "The Apartment" a role which upon his passing was filled by Fred MacMurray. Chesterfield cigarettes were produced by the Liggett and Myers Tobacco Company in Huntington West Virginia Cabell County now on the National Register of Historic Places in the US. The Chesterfield brand was introduced in 1912 and was modified significantly until 1916. Its ultimate recipe was a Turkish-Virginia blend with Burley and Maryland tobaccos added. In 1916 it became the first cigarette to add a moisture-proof plastic wrap to cover its paper and foil pack and in 1952 it became the first cigarette brand to offer two sizes King and Regular. Today Liggett & Myers now the Liggett Group is the fourth largest tobacco company in the United States The design highlights the slogan "Best for you!" and promotes the brand as "First with Premium Quality" alongside Douglas's personal endorsement: "My Steady Smoke for 22 Years." 21 x 22 inches rolled. 1890Best.-Nr. 2876San Francisco: Louis Roesch Co 1890. Very Good. Single leaf red-brown color some tears and small chips along the edges. Advertisement for a school children's "Play Day" at the Sutro Baths in San Francisco which included bell ringing acrobatic feats dancing and a special performance from the London Patomime and Comedy Company. The Sutro Baths 1896-1966 was a public saltwater swimming pool in San Francisco built and owned by entrepreneur and former mayor of San Francisco Adolph Sutro and heralded at its opening as the world's largest indoor swimming pool. Sutro's idea was to provide an inexpensive recreational swimming facility mainly for the working class of San Francisco. In true progressive spirit Sutro also included natural history exhibits at the entrance to the baths as an educational opportunity. However due to their high maintenance and operating cost the baths were eventually converted to an ice skating rink and then sold in 1964 to property developers. A fire in 1966 destroyed what remained of the baths. Throughout its lifetime the Sutro Baths were the setting for a handful of films including two short films in 1897 by Thomas A. Edison and the 1958 American film noir "The Lineup." This leaf was likely an early promotional piece for the Sutro Baths. Louis Roesch Co unknown

1787Best.-Nr. 016686Poultry & Lombard Street London: Charles Dilly & James Phillips 1787. Octavo pp xx 51 a little age-toning and discolouration the title page more marked and with a small old paper repair to the upper corner a near contemporary signature - "R. Prime" - to the title page otherwise very sound internally. in a later twentieth century simple quarter calf binding a little marked and faded the boards slightly bowed. Of great interest is the seedsman's advertisement bound in at the front - Observations on the Culture of the Mangel Wurzel by Jenkins and Gwyther Nursery and Seedsmen New Road and in the Regent's Park. Ths extends to two and a half small sides folded and marked with the remains of an address and a postmark on the final side. Lettsom's work is rare anyway and I can find no trace of another copy of the Jenkins and Gwyther advertisement. Abbe de Commerell had a great interest in husbandry and made a special study of vegetable and fodder crops. Seed of the mangel wurzel fell in to Lettsom's hands and after sowing it at his botanic garden at Grove Hill he found that it produced an excellent crop for both humans and cattle. He immediately commissioned a translation which went in to three editions within a month. His efforts fell on stony ground and he was somewhat derided for his enthusiasm. Shortly in to the next century however it was greatly taken up by farmers. It was at this time that Jenkins and Gwyther issued their little pamphlet. Their nursery at Regent's Park subsequently became the gardens of the Royal Botanic Society. The owner of this copy was Richard Prime of Walberton House near Arundel. Prime a strong Tory was M.P. for the western division of Sussex 1847-54 and the dominant figure in Walberton in his day. Blanche Henrey 556. Second edition. Quarter leather. Good.
