Journey to the center of the East, 1850-1950. 100 years of travelers in Istanbul from Pierre de Gigord Collection.= Dogu'nun merkezine seyahat, 1850-1950. Pierre de Gigord Koleksiyonu'ndan Istanbul'da gezginlerin 100 yili. [Exhibition catalogue]. Coordinated by Zeynep Ögel, Erkan Bora, Gülru Tanman. This exhibition tells the tale of the Istanbul-centred travels of curious Westerners, who ventured out to the East from the 18th century onwards. Geographers, archaeologists, linguists, architects, botanist and clergymen all travelled across the East from the late 18th until the mid-19th century researching their particular interests. After the Crimean War, the expedition-oriented travel that was so popular until the 1850s was replaced by a different kind of travel. The objective was no longer information gathering, but tourism. Based on materials selected from the vast collection of Pierre de Gigord, one of the leading collectors of Ottoman-era photographs and ephemera, this exhibition sheds light on the early years of mass tourism that replaced individual journeys of discovery and transformed travel culture.

2008New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (30 x 24 cm). In Turkish. 210 p., color and b/w ills. Sedad Hakki Eldem 1: Gençlik yillari. He was born in Istanbul in 1908. He graduated from Academy of Fine Arts, department of Architecture. Between 1931 and 1932 he travelled France, England and Germany with scholarship of the academy. In 1932 he opened his own office, also started teaching at the Academy of Fine Arts and continued until retirement at 1978. In 1934 he worked for National Architecture Seminar in Turkey which was a complete disaster for him because of the discussions between modern architecture and traditional architecture. In 1938 he designed the Turkish Pavilion in New York Exhibition. Sedad Hakki Eldem represented Turkish Republic at International Union of Architects in Lozan (1948) after Second World War. Also in the same year Sedad Hakki worked with his colleague Emin Onat on the project of Istanbul Palace of Justice. He worked on proportions and architectural organizations of Ottoman domestic houses, 18th and 19th century palaces and mansions. He known as a role model and pioneer to reinterpret the Classical Ottoman Patterns in modern architecture. He was a part of Former Artifacts Maintain Council (Eski Eserleri Muhafaza Encümeni) between 1941 and 1945 and also a part of Supreme Council of Antiquities and Monument Real Estate. Between 1928 and 1934 defined as preparation years for Sedad Hakki Eldem. At these years the architect worked at Istanbul, Paris and Berlin but there is no built project or something. The only structure that has been built in that period is temporary Turkish pavilion in Budapest Exhibition in 1931. This structure give us so little clues about his searching in architecture. Whereas Sedad Hakki was tried almost every approach popular in these years, also tried to combine them even if they are all contradicted. He even give parts to different architectural elements in one design. For example, one of his trials in Paris, embassy project has Auguste Perret impressions in details, its planimetry has traditional middle "sofa" and "Eyvan" types of components that usually belong to Turkish Architecture. Also the architect inspired by a sheme that peculiar to Iran-Middle East, named "Cihar-bag". At the same time he examined the style of Art Deco, Le Corbusier, Hoffmann, Olbrich, Tessenow and Webb. Despite all of these and his instability of style, he never abandon his researches about traditional and domestic Ottoman civil architecture. He made use of all styles as much as they compromise with traditional architecture. The styles that do not overlap with domestic architecture, are disappeared. 2000New New English Original binding with original dust wrapper. 3 volumes set in special slip case. Large 4to. (43 x 33 cm). [xi], 1182 p. in total. 2400 postcards. Born in 1852 in Kalucz, a town on the eastern border of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Max Fruchtermann came to Istanbul in 1867 and two years later opened a picture framing shop in the city. Having decided to have the first Ottoman Postcard Series printed at Breslau in 1895, he ensured through his cards, which number in the millions, that the name "Turkey and the multifarious images associated with it" spread throughout the entire world from Canada to New Zeland. In 1966 when Fruchtermann's daughter-in-law Anna, before closing down the establishment, sold her remaining stock (subsequently realized to number around 600,000) to a secondhand dealer for 2500 liras, she probably never imagined the importance of her father-in-law's postcards. They are not simply photographs of landscape panoramas monumental buildings and people of the time. They are individual documents that reflect in their human types and cross-sections of everyday life the noteworthy political incidents of the late 19th and early 20th centuries and the ethnic and cultural diversity embodied in the Ottoman identity. As such they have acquired significance far in excess of original expectations. It always comes as a pleasant surprise to collectors to see that ordinary objects left to us from the past, and usually assumed to be of mere functional value, in time acquire special significance. For us, however, far more than a pleasant surprise these postcards are a door opening up on our recent history. The places, incidents and types that Fruchtermann saw and appraised with his own eyes have been given new life and brought together as a whole thanks to this study and up-to-date treatment by Mert Sandalci.
