"The Surname-i Hümayun literally translates into Imperial Festival Book, and were albums that commemorated celebrations in the Ottoman Empire in pictorial and textual detail. Such celebrations included mainly imperial weddings and circumcision festivals. These albums were commissioned by the Ottoman Imperial family, usually by the Sultan presiding at the time. The Surname recounts the festivities in order of when the events took place, which includes in detail processions, grand entrance of the Sultan, feasts, entertainers, musicians, dancers, gift giving, firework displays, circumcision and wedding ceremonies. Although many of the Surnames were made to celebrate circumcisions of Ottoman Princes, the first Surname was commissioned in 1524 for a wedding ceremony. This Surname-I Hümayun was commissioned for a circumcision festival, as well it was to commemorate Sultan Murad III's son Prince Mehmed. This festival lasted fifty-two days and was probably one of the most elaborate and grandiose festival the Ottomans had ever held, and it was well documented. The organization of this Surname was done chronologically, each day documented in order with what occurred. The book was created by an author named 'Intizami' which is a pen-name, and the illustrations were done mainly by court artists.".

"'Yadigar-i Istanbul', has been selected among 35.535 photographs from 911 photograph albums in the library of Yildiz Palace. The oldest of these albums date back to the year 1857. The photograph albums of Yildiz Palace entirely given to Istanbul University in 1924 at the behest of Ataturk are among the world's most remarkable photography collections. Perspectives of the photographers of that period have been reflected while in the selection of photographs for "Yadigar-i Istanbul". Those who see the "Yadigar-i Istanbul photos will realize the early beauties of Istanbul as well as the great changes it has undergone. As a result of the study made on 911 albums containing 35.535 photographs and on the photographers of the albums, almost 370 photographer names emerged. In "Yadigar-i Istanbul, the names of these photographers and their photograph albums are also available. It is a great contribution not only to the history of Ottoman photography but also to that of world photography. It will lead to new research in world's photography history and probably rewriting of the history of photography.".

In this book you will see a city, which was Capital to empires during its poorest days. Once there was greatness and glory as in the drawings of Melchior Lorichs. The Ottoman naval defeat at Lepanto in 1571 or for some other people the failure of the second siege of Vienna in 1683 was the beginning of the decline. The Empire was effectively ended by the World War I (WWI) and those concerned were not able to preserve the city in the appropriate form it deserved. I purchased the album containing these pictures a decade ago. It is understood that an mysterious French Officer who came to Constantinople during the occupation of the city by Allied Forces at the end of WWI in 1918. He took photographs of buildings and people capturing interesting scenes from social life documented the need for extensive restoration of the old city.

A native of western Flanders Ogier Ghiselin de Busbecq served in several posts as diplomatic representative for the Habsburg ruler Ferdinand I King of Bohemia and Hungary 1526 - 64 and Holy Roman Emperor 1556 - 64 . Busbecq's most famous mission was to the Ottoman Empire at the zenith of its power and glory during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent. In four letters to his friend Nicholas Michault who had been Busbecq's fellow student in Italy and afterwards was imperial ambassador to the Portuguese court he details impressions on everything he saw and experienced in Turkey including landscapes plants animals Islam ethnic groups architecture slavery military matters court practices clothing gender and domestic relations and the Sultan himself. Suleiman spelled Soleiman in the translation the Magnificent is perhaps the most distinguished figure in Turkish history and his reign saw the greatest extension of Turkish power. His devotion to his own religion and his tolerance of other faiths his munificence and generosity won him the fidelity of his subjects and the respect of his enemies. Busbecq was given the assignment of using diplomacy to check the raids of the Turks into Hungary and he proved very effective with his quick sympathy appreciation of the Turkish character and patience. He returned from Constantinople in the autumn of 1562 with an established reputation as a diplomat. Busbecq's Turkish Letters is a treasure of early travel literature reflecting Busbecq's rich literary talent classical education love for collecting antiquities and remarkable power of observation. Delightfully entertaining reading it also offers invaluable lessons on understanding and bridging cultural divides. The interest does not lie in the inevitable head-butting between two rival imperialisms in this case the remains of the Holy Roman Empire and the Ottoman Empire but in the labyrinthine complexity of Ottoman government. De Busbecq is however cultured and clever and not only manages to work with the Ottomans but is also a fascinating observer and commentator who draws out the differences between his own culture and that of the Ottoman regime. ; Small 8vo 7½" - 8" tall; xvi 265 pages .
