Best.-Nr. PE47Quarto album ca. 26x195 cm. 12 card stock leaves. With 48 original gelatin silver photographs including about 4 printed and 2 real photo postcards each ca. 137x85 cm 5 ½ x 3 ¼ x in; with a business card of “George S. Belfield. Director: Dobbies LTD” signed on the verso: “Kenya… Trust you will like it with every good wish for Christmas and 1931.” At least 1 photo with period ink caption in English on the verso two real photo postcards signed and dated. Period full-cloth album with the gilt-tooled generic title and the shape in the form of the sun on the front board. Edges worn several photos with tears at the edges and mild silvering but overall a very good album with strong interesting photos. Historically interesting collection of lively vernacular photographs illustrating the life of an affluent Scottish jewelry maker in Kenya British East Africa in the 1910s. As follows from the album the compiler was George Sinclair Belfield ca. 1860-1931 one of the most experienced watchmakers and jewelers in East Africa. Born in Prestonpans Scotland he was trained by the renowned Edinburgh firm Marshall & Co. jewelers to Queen Victoria and King Edward VII. Belfield arrived in British East Africa in 1905 during a period of rapid colonial expansion and development. He became a business partner of Ewart Dobbie who had founded Dobbies Ltd. in Nairobi - a premier retailer of Swiss watches including Rolex and Tudor. Upon Dobbie’s death in 1926 Belfield took over the firm which existed until 1931. The collection features forty-eight vibrant views of Kenya with most photographs likely showing colonial Nairobi where the compiler lived. Seven identified well-executed photos depict exterior of Dobbie’s jewelry shop no other photos of the company building were found throughout our internet research Muthaiga golf club government road with numerous cars and contemporary buildings and general view of the city. Especially interesting are about ten candid urban scenes showing the compiler and his companions during a safari trip proudly posing with rifles and native guides by the game rhinos lions elephants zebras etc. There are also about eight lively vernacular individual and group portraits likely depicting members of the Kikuyu community. Studio photographs show men and women adorned with neck rings arm bangles and head wraps posed formally while other images capture half-clothed African men during traditional dance rituals. The rest of the photos including real and printed photo postcards mostly document native huts in Nairobi the Manor Hotel in Mombasa spectators at a sporting event a railway track with military sandbags scenes from a military event and the compiler with his companions posing at a bathing spot alongside local missionaries etc. Overall historically interesting collection of photographs documenting Kenya in the 1910s. paperback
Best.-Nr. PB3Oblong Folio album ca. 23x295 cm or 9 x 11 ½ in. 20 card stock leaves. With 58 mounted original gelatin silver photos including seven large images ca. 16x22 cm 6 ¼ x 8 ¾ in; the rest of the photos are from ca. 13x145 cm 5 x 5 ½ in to ca. 8x9 cm 3 x 3 ½ in. All but a few photos with period ink captions in Russian on the mounts. First leaf with a manuscript ink title date “1936” and two signatures of the compilers. Period black full cloth album; front cover with a gilt-lettered title “Album” in Russian and blind-stamped decorative ornaments. Binding rubbed on extremities and slightly loosened on the hinges ten leaves with remnants of old mounts on versos likely done before the creation of the present collection a few photos mildly faded but overall a very good album of strong interesting photos. Interesting collection of original gelatin silver amateur photos illustrating two summer hiking trips in the Caucasus mountains in 1936 and 1938 undertaken by a group of Soviet tourists. Most likely the group included the associates of a Soviet tekhnikum technical school as one of the photos showing some of the tourists singing in a Caucasian park is captioned “a meeting of the technikum with an Armenian musical school.” The first part of the album 27 photos illustrates a journey around Georgia in 1936. The images show Terek River bridge near Lars village Verknii Lars modern-day border checkpoint between Russia and Georgia Yermolovsky Rock giant boulder in the Dariali Gorge in the vicinity of Verkny Lars village Dariali Castle Gergeti Glacier on the southeastern slope of Mt. Kazbek general view crevasses a glacier river Krestovy Jvary Pass on the Georgian Military Road divides valleys of Terek and Aragvi Rivers Dusheti town in the foothils of the Greater Caucasus range &c. Several group portraits and scenes show the tourists near a crevasse of the Gergeti Glacier resting with Mount Kazbek in the background one person is named “Ivan Petrovich” walking on a road taking a break before the Krestovy Jvary Pass posing next to the stone cross at Krestovy Pass erected in 1824 shaving “Always elegant N.K. Lorents” plucking tea on the way to Pasanauri town posing in their tents in Passanauri &c. A series of photos of Batumi on the Black Sea coast shows the famous colonnade on the seaside Batumi Boulevard and the local botanical garden grave of the founder of the garden botanist and geographer Andrey Krasnov 1862-1915; tourists in the bamboo grove near giant agave plants next to a mandarin tree. The second part of the album includes 31 images taken during a 1938 tour along the Ossetian Military Road. It was built by the Russian Empire administration in 1854-1889 to connect Kutaisi in western Georgia and the industrial town of Alagir in North Ossetia modern-day Russia. The road led through the Mamison Pass of the Greater Caucasus range situated on the territory of the South Ossetia region. After the breakup of the Soviet Union South Ossetia declared independence from Georgia and became the centre of a long-lasting conflict with Georgian authorities. After the Russo-Georgian War of 2008 the status of the Mamison Pass is undetermined so the border crossing and the Ossetian Military Road in this area are closed to the public. The photos include a large general view of the Mamison Pass and vivid scenes and portraits taken in North Ossetia. The photos show Tseydon/Tsey River a log bridge across the river tourist base in Tsey an “ancient Ossetian sanctuary” an old tomb “Devil’s bridge” over the Ardon River upper reaches of the Rioni River a tunnel in a shist rock formation Ossetian villages portraits of Ossetian women and kids and several scenes with the tourists resting near the Ardon River – “on the first stop after leaving Alagir” sitting on the moraine of the Tsey glacier sleeping after they drank some “healing water” walking on a road to Sochkheri &c. Five photos reproduce “friendly charges caricature” portraits of the “expedition head” and group members. Overall an attractive collection of original photos providing a look into Soviet organized tours to Georgia and Northern Ossetia in the late 1930s. hardcover
1850Best.-Nr. 13416Newnan GA 1850. Broadside 15.5 x 7.25 inches. Minor edge wear old folds substantial foxing. Overall good plus. A very rare broadside memorializing a meeting of the Union Southern Rights Party in late-1850. The text records the proceedings of a November 5 1850 meeting in Newnan the seat of Coweta County Georgia to nominate Congressional candidates and propagate the organization's Preamble and Resolutions. The Preamble asserts that the Union Southern Rights Party of Coweta County has assembled to meet a "crisis which calls for a free and full expression of the opinions of every citizen" and therefore issues their "Declaration of principles and intended action." The six resolutions can be summed up as follows: they oppose the recent admission of California; "Disunion at present" is not the answer.yet; they reserve the right to secede if Congress continues to "war upon our property" and they are "left no other alternative;" they "express the determination of the state of Georgia" at an upcoming convention and wish to "promote true Southern Independence" if necessary; any candidate should "oppose any and every measure which may lead either directly or indirectly to a dissolution of the Union;" and that the people of Georgia should "forget all past Party distinctions and differences" and work together to ensure that the government is "rescued from impending dangers." Here the Union Southern Rights Party stands opposed to secession but reserves the right to exercise it in the future a fairly common viewpoint in the mid-19th century South. They answer some critics further along the path to secession in one passage here stating that "We repel the idea that we are 'Submissionists' or that we have any sympathy with the enemies of Southern Rights." In this way they are emblematic of a large portion of Southern politicians at the time who believed that slavery was an inherent right baked into the Constitution and was further a states rights issue. That viewpoint continued up to during and clear through the other side of the Civil War. Only one holding noted in OCLC and Hummel at Duke University. Hummel 402. unknown

Her life and work well documented in her lifetime and since have taken on mythic proportions. Hawai'i is also mythic in our national psyche-a paradisiacal place of healing and renewal. In 1938 the Dole Pineapple Co. invited Georgia O'Keeffe to come to Hawai'i to produce two paintings for their national advertising campaign. Like other great artists of her day including Kuniyoshi Sheets and Noguchi she accepted and in the spring of 1939 spent nine weeks the Hawaiian Islands. On Maui where she was hosted by 12-year-old Patricia Jennings the daughter of the Hana sugar plantation manager she had an encounter that would affect both women for the rest of their lives. Patricia was an isolated introvert homeschooled and raised by a highly critical mother. When Georgia O'Keeffe arrived in Hawai'i she was in the throes of marital duress and health challenges. Georgia and Patricia's 10 days together were deeply bonding and profoundly healing. Patricia was nurtured by a mother figure and Georgia recovered emotionally and physically and produced 20 little known yet magnificent works of art. In Georgia O'Keeffe's Hawai'i Patricia Jennings Morriss tells the story of their encounter offering glimpses and a fresh look at the process of the great artist through the eyes of a pre-war teen in territorial Hawai'i. O'Keeffe's 20 lush paintings of Island flora and landscapes are reproduced together here for the first time. Reflecting on her time on Maui O'Keeffe wrote "I enjoy this drifting off into space on an island.” Years later she added it was one of "the best things I have done.” In 1940 O'Keeffe's Hawai'i paintings were exhibited at a An American Place in New York to critical acclaim yet in the years since they've only been displayed all together once. In the introduction to Georgia O'Keeffe's Hawaii art historian Jennifer Saville asserts that O'Keeffe's nine-week sojourn in the Hawaiian Islands helped shape her career bridging themes examined earlier to later subjects. This heartwarming informative read fills a gap in our knowledge about the life and work of one of this great artist. With 20 paintings in full color and a host of period photos. "A lovely scrapbook with beautiful reproductions of the Hawaiian paintings and stories about Jennings's time with O'Keeffe." -- Boston Globe "Georgia O'Keeffe's Hawaii is the charming funny memoir by Jennings … of 10 days that changed both their lives.” -- Maui News "Georgia O'Keeffe's Hawai'i masterfully contextualizes a mercurial woman whose art changed the world." -- Maui TIme Weekly "Patricia Jennings . is adding her voice to the O'Keeffe mythology.” --Maui Jungalow blog . 2011. 0982165641 .
