1838réf. 6541Jamaica 1838. About very good. 3pp. Quarto on a folded folio sheet. Old fold lines minor wear and soiling. Slight loss from wax seal affecting a few words of text. Letter written by William Forsyth to his associate Gilbert McNab discussing a shipment to be made and the state of affairs with the workers in Jamaica. Britain issued the Slavery Abolition Act in 1833 effectively emancipating their colonies in the West Indies. Emancipation however was gradual and a system of "apprenticeship" was instituted for several years -- effectively slavery by another name -- finally ending in 1838. Planters protested the emancipation of their workforce and clearly felt imposed upon by the government in the far-away mother country. Herein Forsyth expounds on his complaints with the system lamenting: ".I regret to say I have nothing pleasant to communicate. The negroes are still going on in the old way and will do nothing for us that they can help. The governor has caused an enquiry to be instituted into the conduct of the special magistrate but although several weeks have transpired the result has not been made known. By the agents letter which arrived by the packet on the 12th inst. I find that the British government are determined to legislate for the colonies in London. They intend to insist upon all the allowances and indulgences which were granted under the slave system whether by law or by custom shall be continued to them now without any other return from the apprentice than the 4 1/2 days labour in the week; many of them having been given by the master in consequence of working six days in crop time and keeping spell during the night whereas many masters who possessed pens and other property never gave their slaves hirings or additional clothing. These will not be compelled to give them now although they get the same amount of labour that the sugar planter does. The injustice of this measure is so apparent that it requires no argument to convince impartial men of it. How a property like Orange Hill can stand this I do not know." He goes on to detail the early harvesting of the crop due to the labor issues discusses a shipment being made of sugar and rum and promises a full statement of accounts. An interesting look into the state of agricultural labor in the West Indies following emancipation. unknown
