réf. 022857New York: George E. Leefe Lithographer. Unbound. Good. no date perhaps circa 1850s/60s; Single sheet roughly 42 by 6 ¾ inches. Printed on a single side only. Presumably disbound from a book or pamphlet of some sort. A map depicting the straight line of the proposed Mississippi and Atlantic Railroad running from Terre Haute Indiana to Illinoistown Illinois now East St. Louis. Chartered in 1850 the Mississippi and Atlantic Railroad generated contentious debate among the people of Illinois with those in Southern Illinois and those in the Central and North opposed. The opposition hired Abraham Lincoln and other lawyers in a suit to stop the railroad that ultimately failed. Even though the Mississippi and Atlantic Railroad Corporation succeeded in court the railroad never came to fruition. This map depicts various towns along with rivers such as the Wabash and the Mississippi and the intersection of other railroads like the Illinois Central and the Ohio and Mississippi Railroads. GOOD condition. Slightly ex-library with a historical society blindstamp at the right edge of the map. Many vertical fold creases presumably as issued. Minor toning and wrinkling to the map. Several of the gutters of the folds with two small holes offset from the center. George E. Leefe, Lithographer unknown

"On the memorable day when British Colonial Slavery ceased the 'Peckham Negro's Friend and Instruction Society' held a special meeting with a view to 'signalizing the day of Negro Emancipation by some act of Christian benevolence" and accordingly came to the unanimous resolution of undertaking 'the charge of an Adult School to be established in the island of Jamaica. The necessary steps were taken to effect this design; and it is the hope of aiding the the extension of its practical usefulness which has prompted a few individuals who have long felt deeply interested in the Negro's cause to collect into a small volume such poems as may be within their reach written for the most part in special commemoration of the abolition of Slavery and to apply the profit if any to the furtherance of the object before described." The authors of most of these poems have signed with their initials only. This is the first edition. LCP 2587. Published by Edmund Fry unknown

1806réf. 022612Durham NH: No publisher 1806. Pamphlet. Good. State Highway List for 1806 to 1814 Handwritten. Durham New Hampshire Lt. Robert Burnham Surveyor and Toll Collector. No publisher place or date. Presumed circa 1806. Side stitched booklet of paper 7 leaves. Roughly 6 ½ by 4 inches. A handwritten record of the taxes or tolls paid by residents of Durham New Hampshire from the years 1806 to 1814. These were collected by Lieutenant Robert Burnham of Durham for use of Point Road to Bickford's Ferry. The booklet includes handwritten authorization from Strafford County explaining duties and rules. This includes allowing labor on maintaining the road to be used in lieu of taxes. The pay rate was set in the booklet. Burnham made use of every blank space on the paper writing upside down in the lines between older records. The list includes names and taxes paid. It appears Burnham fought in the Revolutionary War. Bickford's Ferry was an important crossing point in Durham allowing people to cross Little Bay to get to Newington Portsmouth and elsewhere prior to the building of the Scammel Bridge. Some names listed include the "wife of Valentine Smith" presumably referring to Judge Valentine Smith; Captain Jonathn Woodman Captain Mooney; Zebulon York listed at sea; Thomas Pinkham; Mary Chesley; "Widow" Elizabeth Hanson; Sally Burnham; Abigail Mooney and many others. The names are often accompanied by dates presumably of passage. GOOD condition. General toning minor soiling and staining to the paper. 1961réf. 019792No Place: No Publisher 1961. Unbound. Good. John F. Kennedy Inaugural Ball Account in Letter. Two pages printed on single sides only. Thin yellow paper presumably a copy of the original produced at the same time as the original as the previous owner seemingly kept copies of all correspondence. From an executive of a very large international insurance firm name of owner and firm withheld for privacy. The previous owner saved these items for an apparent planned scrapbook mounting most on paper with either glue or staples. The owner was a highly placed executive in an insurance company and travelled throughout the world extensively. They were active in politics through donations and fundraising and it appears their family was friendly with the Roosevelts especially Eleanor Roosevelt. The previous owner's work for the insurance company led them to meet with various heads of state worldwide including US government officials. Some of the people associated with this firm were also involved in World War II activities including financing the Flying Tigers in China as well as work for the OSS using knowledge gained from insurance work. While we have not found any direct connection to intelligence work by this owner their ties to those who did are strong. NB: we are starting the process of cataloguing four boxes of material from this individual both personal and business correspondence. More information on the collection available on request. Previous owner is the same as the above item. This letter dated January 24 1961 details their arrival back in New York to who is presumed to be their spouse. After a few paragraphs about family matters the letter describes the owner's efforts to an inauguration event at the Statler Hotel/National Armory that was made extremely difficult by a bad snowstorm. Mentioned are performers such as Frank Sinatra Harry Belafonte Nat King Cole and others. The author then mentions attending one of five inaugural balls stating it was much like the Eisenhower Inaugural Ball but more crowded. Apparently Jackie Kennedy was too tired at this point to attend but JFK was "full of fire." The letter goes on with details about guests/friends and other personal matters. GOOD condition. Two binding holes punched at the top edge. Minor wrinkling. Pencil initials at the top of the first page. No Publisher unknown

1847réf. 022598No Place: No publisher 1847. Unbound. Fair. No publisher place or date. Perhaps Daily Tribune Printer. Chicago: 1847. Single sheet 17 by 8 ¼ inches when unfolded. Presumably removed from "Report of the Survey of the Route of the Galena and Chicago Railroad" by Richard P. Morgan in 1847. Map matches that held by the Newberry Library in their copy of that report. The Galena and Chicago Union Railroad was chartered in 1836 but did not start construction until 1848. It took several years to achieve its goal of reaching the Galena lead mines but did prove its profitability by offering freight services on already completed lines. After its initial completion the line expanded to other lines reaching the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. Richard Morgan was the civil engineer overseeing the initial construction and this map reflects the original intended route while the actual route differed slightly when nearing Galena due to the rights of another railroad. FAIR/GOOD condition ex-library and disbound. Historical Society blindstamp in Lake Michigan. Heavy browning to a portion of the center of the map and left edge. 1 ½ inch closed tear in the lower center of the map with a 2 inch tear at the lower center right edge. Minor crease and tear at the left edge with the right edge rather tattered from removal. Pencil notes on the reverse. No publisher unknown
