With 32pp publisher's catalogue (April, 1889) bound in at end of second volume as called for. First published in 1868, Darwin's longest work was extensively revised for the second edition of 1875 which became the final text. It is especially notable for containing (in Chapter XXVII) the first statement of the author's provisional hypothesis of pangenesis. First edition first impression of this souvenir guide to the extensive celebrations commemorating the centenary of Darwin's birth and fiftieth anniversary of the Origin of Species; over 400 scientists and dignitaries from 167 countries were involved. This work includes a timetable of the events and an outline of Darwin's life extracted from Francis Darwin's 1848-1925 Life and Letters 1887 and More Letters of Charles Darwin 1903 which was co-edited by Seward. Freeman notes that this edition is also encountered bound in quarter parchment; no priority has been established. Quarto. Original quarter buckram dark greyish-brown paper sides front cover lettered in gilt and with University of Cambridge crest in red and gilt inside circle stamped in blind. Gregory would become a distinguished geologist and explorer best-known for his work in Australia and East Africa. In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). 15 p., b/w portrait of Charles Darwin, (1809-1882) on front cover. Taken from a volume including multiple booklets. Minor wear on spine. Small tear on pages' extremities. Slightly faded on pages. Otherwise a good copy. First and only edition of the first Darwin biography in the Ottoman / Turkish world. "Büyük Adamlar Serisi" [i.e. The "Big Men" series], consisting of about 41 small books, all of which were published in 1927, by a delegation under the presidency of the body and some of which were written by him personally, filled an important gap on 'biography' field in its period. This delegation includes Ali Resat, Tezer Agaoglu, Galip Ata Ataç besides Gövsa. This small book is the first and ever biography of Darwin in Ottoman literature. Gövsa was an Ottoman / Turkish writer and poet who is known for his biography and encyclopedia studies. Extremely rare. Özege 3636.; Not in OCLC.
